Hi-Vis Baby: Indie-rockers Bakers Eddy release single about life on two wheels
You might have heard of Bakers Eddy if you’re big into your music…the New Zealand-based band has supported acts like Highly Suspect and The Rubens, and has a new track out called…*drumroll please*…Hi-Vis Baby.
And yes, it’s about life as a cyclist. “I could go forever, distance is nothing. I think i feel better because my heart is pumping. If you’re in a four-wheel drive you can fuck off because i am not your problem ’cause I am on a journey don’t concern you.” Catchy.
There are hints of their punk-inspired past, and the band describes its sound as “loud, fast and dirty” which incidently is how I describe my bike (although more often than not loud, slow and dirty would be more accurate).
So where would this chart in our 2016 People’s Choice: your favourite songs about bikes and cycling?
Tour de France by Kraftwerk came out on top in that, Bicycle Race by Queen second and Half Man Half Biscuit’s See that my bike’s kept clean was in third. Any danger of Hi-Vis Baby cracking the podium?

How could you forget…The brand got a fair bit of heat for it when it first dropped, and then got the official telling off from the Advertising Standards Authority, informing Mamnick’s owner Thom Barnett that the ad breached UK advertising code.

Here’s a lesson you should apparently consider: don’t swear if you’re put in danger on the roads…
@CyclingForMind found out the hard way after reporting this driver for a dangerous overtake ahead of a blind bend, only to receive a caution and see no action against the motorist. The manoeuvre came moments before this later footage and “out of fright at being overtaken so close to a blind bend I ended up swearing,” the rider explained.
“I could see the look of anger on the driver’s face as he overtook. Five minutes later I passed the same driver in a car park. He appeared to be checking his phone. I shook my head at the fact he had time to stop to check his phone but not to wait until it was safe to overtake.”
That’s where we join the footage…with the driver chasing after to have a few words…
“I was inches away from being forced onto the gravel,” they continued. “If I crashed I could have hit the stone wall to my left or gone underneath the van.”
In the following ‘debate’, “he came out with such gems as ‘you’re swearing in front of my fucking young lad’.
“At no point did I swear at the driver while he was out of the van or make threats against him. Not proud of myself for the language I used in front of the kid but I did not expect a kid to be in a work van when he first overtook.
“I think most people would react the same. When you fear that you are about to be killed you don’t have time to consider your words. It was a primal reaction to the most primal fear.”
When the incident was reported to the Garda, the inspector cautioned the cyclist for their language, and cautioned the driver for their language also, but “no action in regards to overtaking towards a blind bend”.
Despite repeated requests for updates and an appeal the original decision stood. “What message are the Garda sending out here? If a driver causes you such fear that you swear don’t report them or you will end up in court.”
Prague makes bike-sharing project free for all *T&Cs apply
People in Czech capital Prague will have free access to short-term bike-sharing after a pilot project was made permanent. The Lítačka public transport pass will now give users up to 15 minutes free use of hire bikes, four times a day.
Canadian Cycling Magazine reports the scheme was initially implemented to alleviate the city’s congestion by offering an alternative to bus or car journeys.
Having begun in October the three-month pilot has now been made permanent. The stats from the pilot showed the majority of journeys lasted around five minutes, most likely as people commuted or popped to the shops.

Glasgow commuter spotted cycling across M8 Kingston Bridge during rush hour
A Glasgow commuter (hopefully not behind the wheel at the time) snapped this shot of a cyclist riding along the ten-lane M8 road bridge on Tuesday morning. Glasgow Live speculated they must have crossed the Clyde by taking the slip road up from Waterloo Street in the city centre or Newton Street after being spotted heading towards the Tradeston exit.
The bridge is regarded as one of Europe’s busiest, seeing more than 150,000 vehicles a day. It’s not the first time a rider has taken the wrong turn. In 2017, a cyclist was “fearful and in tears” after ending up on the bridge.

Speaking to El País, Ayuso’s coach said the Spaniard has lofty ambitions to be as good, if not better, than his esteemed colleague. “He thinks that Tadej is not his ceiling – but that his ceiling is to be better than Tadej,” Iñigo San Millán said.
At a recent training camp Ayuso showed his promise, finishing 14 seconds slower than Pogačar as the two-time Tour de France winner smashed the KOM on Coll de Rates.
“I put both of them together at the same time [on the climb] so that they would get itchy, so that Tadej could see that he couldn’t relax because Ayuso is so strong. And also so that Ayuso can see that he is getting closer to Tadej.
“On the Coll de Rates, the intensity was similar to that of a Tour stage. If Ayuso does this in a race which Tadej isn’t…He dreams big. Why is it going to be possible to beat Tadej?”

There’s a new team on the block. The Vatican Cycling team was accepted as a member of the UCI in the autumn, with president David Lappartient travelling to Rome to give Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi a cycling jersey for Pope Francis.
Now, we’re pretty sure Pope Francis himself won’t be donning the Lycra for a bid at road race glory…so what is the team’s goal?
The dream of the Vatican team is apparently to qualify for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, but for now team officials say team spirit and spreading Pope Francis’ love of cycling will be enough.
NCR reports Ravasi told attendees that although Leonardo da Vinci did not invent the bicycle, his 16th-century sketches helped intuit what would become today’s bikes.

@the little onion I saw that today too, and came here looking for reaction - it got a little bit of attention on the live blog a couple of days ago. I also don't have a problem with the police looking at a submitted clip in its totality, and if you've done something you shouldn't have, don't expect to get away with it. (Am I right in thinking they also looked at other, totally separate clips you had submitted too over the offensive language thing?) But I'm in two minds about the actual cycling that got the fine. Yes, it's uncomfortably tight, and if I'd done that I'd have a had a word with myself afterwards about self-preservation, but I'm not convinced they posed any danger to the driver of that tank, at the speeds involved and going uphill. However, sounds like the charge was careless cycling, so danger not required.
@mctrials23 totally agree, I think the problem is perhaps finding a police officer these days with a basic grasp of maths - or at least the authority to deploy it without being bestowed with the title of "trained forensic specialist".

That is one result, but my understanding is that it's wider than this - they were getting so many submissions that they are no longer taking action on *any* offence where the action would be a warning letter. So, for example, zig-zag line offences, where South Wales Police previously acted on OpSnap reports, are now NFAd. That begs a further question though - if you've already had a warning letter for an offence, a repeat offence should potentially result in a fine or prosecution. Are they checking each report to see if the reported driver has previously had a warning, or just NFA-ing all offences of a particular type? Any thoughts, wjts?!
The leader's team would get on the front and block the roads through Montmartre and completely kill the spectacle. Let's face it, the last stage has always been meaningless apart from the sprint, now it's meaningless apart from a superb and thrilling triple lap of Montmartre followed by a sprint. Neutralising GC helped that spectacle - imagine if Tadej had needed to go back and help bring Del Toro up. The roads are too narrow to allow for really fair racing, if we want the wonder of the Montmartre loop then GC neutralisation is the price we have to pay, and one well worth paying in my view.

The big thing that the technical analysis missed out is positioning on the bike. Modern riders do aero work on their road bike and have much better discipline on holding position than even riders 10 years ago. I think Dan Bingham summed it up, his team rode with an old POC helmet with a massive peak whereas Sky had a little stub tail Cask helmet the idea being that it was less sensitive to head position. Bingham said that the long tail helmet was about 15W faster. “How hard would you train to get 15w more power, is it harder than training yourself to live with that helmet?” Pantani is standing up on the pedals, bare head, shirt open, rocking and rolling everywhere with his position, vs someone who is sat on the seat in a quasi time trial position. The 90’s riders were rank amateurs compared with those today, so it’s not a massive surprise that 30 years of progress can beat EPO.
@HoarseMann Oh I can assure you that plenty of passes can be proved with absolute certainty to have been illegal purely from generous guesses on the size of cars and the size of lanes. Lets say you drive a 2m wide car that takes up 2/3rd of a lane in a video. Someone with a basic grasp of maths would be able to tell you that you couldn't overtake a cyclist without moving into the opposite lane even if the cyclist was 0cm wide and somehow riding on the very edge of the road where it meets the pavement. Someone with a basic understanding of maths would be able to tell you that unless the car was 1.5m or less wide on a 3m wide road, its impossible to overtake by staying on your side of the road with 1.5m space even if the cyclist took up 0 space. They simply don't want to do anything about it. Its got absolutely nothing to do with holding up in court because that wouldn't be an issue in a huge number of cases and they know it. No one in their right mind would go to court to contest it.
That's... not right. The prosecution has to* prove beyond reasonable doubt that the offence was committed, but not that every single detail of statements made by their witnesses is accurate. And HoarseMann is correct that it doesn't mean the same as "with absolute certainty", otherwise it would be "beyond *all* doubt". [* More accurately, should have to. In practice, when it comes to offences against cyclists, the system often does seem to demand that it's proven beyond unreasonable doubt as well, but that's not what the standard is supposed to be, or what's applied to other offences. ]

Drivers endangering cyclists is mundane and everyday, not worthy of being reported in the BBC. Cyclists endangering drivers is the unusual exception, which then gets reported. Chances are youd have avoided their kit anyway,simply by them just being another mostly anonymous small online kit brand producing identikit designs in bland colourways, so the ad doesnt really negatively impact your purchasing choices in the way you think,you werent a purchaser to begin with.
But by being provocative and generating news articles on them in the cycling press, now you’ve heard of them, as have people in a far wider reach than some expensive black & white arty hark back to the 60s, ASA compliant ad full page spread in Rouleur would have and for a fraction of the cost because people are literally printing their ad now for free.
And there will be people who wouldnt have heard of this brand otherwise, who the ad & how the brand styles itself appeals to, who will buy their stuff, it wont have mass appeal, but not all ads are designed to be mass appeal and directly influence you personally to buy their stuff, given their size they might be quite happy being a bit niche.
All that continually revisiting the ad does is keep the free publicity for it going.

At the risk of upsetting anyone, Irish Gaelic is a term for the Irish language in English and indeed Gaelic is derived from Gaelige; insisting on calling it Gaeilge when speaking in English is the same as insisting on saying Francais instead of French or Espanol instead of Spanish. Once had a WVM pull alongside myself and and another cyclists (two abreast…heaven forbid)…on a quiet road with no other traffic and then begin to lecture us on why we shouldn’t be riding two abreast…to which I told him he shouldn’t be driving on the wrong side of the road having a conversation with cyclists…
I offered for him to pull over and I would show him the rules of the road (.pdf copy) where it clearly stated we were entitled to ride two abreast and told him to be on his way, otherwise I’d submit my camera footage to the Gardai.
So, he had actually delayed himself by presuming to lecture us, when in fact we were not even posing any delay to his ‘necessary’ journey in the first place.
