Labour-run Haringey Council has rolled out three LTNs in the borough in recent months, in Bounds Green, Bruce Grove and, most recently, West Green. As with similar initiatives elsewhere, they are aimed at preventing rat-running drivers from using residential streets as a short cut, and thereby also making the area safer and more pleasant for people living there.
Introduced under the Haringey Streets for People initiative, the council has said that the LTNs were put in place following three rounds of engagement with the local community. It has also made exemptions available for a number of categories of people including Blue Badge holders.
And just like Katie Hopkins and Jordan Peterson in recent times (what company to be in, by the way) the local Conservative group has hit out at the clean air schemes. Anyway, the replies to their latest ‘campaigning’ were every bit as entertaining and insightful as you’d hope…

Being slightly cynical that means professional clubs, some of whom’s players will be jetting across the country to avoid a four-hour bus journey, ask fans to think about how they can have a positive impact on climate change.
Anyway, my grumpiness aside, Beryl has teamed up with Championship club Norwich City FC as part of a nationwide initiative for their game against Burnley tomorrow and will set up a temporary ‘virtual bay’ outside Carrow Road between 11am and 12.30pm meaning fans can get to the ground by bike, e-bike or e-scooter and can claim 20 minutes off their journey with a free unlock (it’s a 12:30pm kick-off by the way, you don’t have to get there four hours early…)
“Our vehicles are a fun, easy to use and sustainable way to make short journeys, which makes them perfect for local fans to get to the football stadium,” Beryl CEO Phil Ellis said.
“By swapping the car for more sustainable transport, you can not only help reduce traffic congestion and harmful carbon emissions, you can also improve your own physical and mental health. "Welcome to London" where thieves cut through bike racks
We’re all more than familiar with the bike thieves willing to use angle grinders to cut through bike locks…

That’s just a few of the incidents we’ve covered…
But apparently the brazen bike thieves of England’s capital are now willing to cut through the whole damn bike rack to take your pride and joy. Some replies warned users to make sure the rack they’re locking their bike to doesn’t have cut-outs like this covered by stickers and that the bottom of the unit is properly secured to the floor.
Another commenter was left hoping the post doesn’t give Bristol’s criminally-minded opportunists an idea…
How do you stop your bike getting nicked? For me, it’s the ol’ three lock job (front wheel, frame and rear wheel) then, as bad as it sounds, pray there are easier targets elsewhere… Oh, and insurance just for some financial peace of mind…

I'll counter that by saying the Bryton 750se I have drives me nuts at times. Inconsistantly picks up on routes created on Komoot and the app re-syncs every few seconds when trying to set up the device and sends me back to the home screen. The most infuriating one is that I turned live track on. Once. It now won't turn off and repeatedly flags up the live track is starting, and then disconnecting every few seconds whilst riding. I haven't timed it but it wouldn't suprise me if 10-20% of the time the the screen is covered with an error message. That's been about 6 weeks now. Other than that it's great :/

Poor Vincent cannot get over the simple fact that given the choice people prefer dedicated cycling spaces, rather than pretending to be cars like vehicular cyclists.
What is the point of the fancy air sensor if it can't account for changing weather conditions?? If all you care about is a delayed approximation of aerodynamic watts in steady conditions, you don't need any special sensors for that. Just your speed on a decently flat course is enough to approximate rolling resistance and drivetrain losses. And the rest must be aero. If you assume a less aero body position at the same watts, your speed will drop while rolling resistance also drops, which means approximated aero watts goes up. And that's enough to demonstrate what you've shown in your testing protocol ("I sat upright and the number went up a little while later").
Your correction is accurate - it's almost always been "the (lack of) thought that (doesn't) count". "Massive" - less than a billion a year spent on active travel (trying to catch up / building a network across the entire country) Not massive - 6 billion every year (2026-2030) spent on road *maintenance* of existing "already built, goes everywhere, very convenient" road network for inactive travel Ultimately the reason "cycle infra" is *needed* is those unbelievably colossal amounts spent every year (and for more than a century now) on making mass motoring not just viable but apparently the "best choice" for most journeys. As the Dutch and others have shown, the majority of people *are* prepared to cycle and even mix with very light, slow local motor traffic *if* cycling is also made safe and convenient for the whole of their journey (including secure parking at both ends). (The history of the financial drivers of the current situation are a complex topic but note that while people complain about "crumbling roads" and underfunded motor infra - with some reason - by us continuing the fuel duty escalator freeze (for example) we're actually helping motorists pay *even less* for that activity / subsidising more of the cost of driving than ever.)

@MaxiMinimalist Agreed. The big problem I see now is today's parents grew up being driven to their schools, and therefore, see private motor vehicles as the only viable form of transport. The vast majority of UK infant and primary schools have a catchment area that is within easy walking distance from home to school. Yet, the traffic caused by pupils being driven to/from school is astonishing. Banishing the "School Run" should be a priority for all schools.
When I was a kid (that was during the previous millenium when phones were connected to a plug in the wall), I rode my bicycle to school, music academy, sport grounds, parties even during the winter. The government didn't have to spend, correct that, didn't have to think of spending massive amounts of money to build cycling specific infrastructures. Over the past 3 or 4 decades, cars have grown bigger, taller, safer (for their drivers) and faster. Meanwhile, motorists have become abusive, aggressive, hypersensitive to people moving on two wheels, aka cyclists. Spending billions upon billions on new infrastructure won't address the crux of the matter. Sadly.

Definitely. If you can run a clunker of a car you could easily run a fine-looking bike. At the lower end * you can easily get a good second hand bike for a couple of hundred. Heck you can get a new bike (in any of several categories – even “practical”) for less than a grand. Your running costs will be tiny compared to a car even if you do no maintenance except taking it to the bike shop when it’s unhappy.
People totally don’t get the economics though because bicycles are seen as a completely different category of thing – not “transport”. Even by people who have never carried a fridge in their car and for whom the vast majority of their car journeys are one or at most two person trips of a couple of miles in an urban environment.
Notjustbikes has an excellent segment of the great value of a bike vis-a-vis a car in his video on cargo bikes as an unbeatable urban transport solution.
* It’s laughable when policiticans express concern about the (driving) welfare of poor folks. It’s not just the Conservatives; realistically none of them care – except worrying about how much they might cost the health, welfare and crime budgets. None of the poorest section of the population are going to get awkward questions raised in the national media, keep their national parties running or send them to sports events or nice dinners.

For example.
You only own a single car and have trouble affording private school fees = poor.
You own no cars and have trouble affording the gas bill = you are not worth worrying about.

It’s funny you mention this. We had our first Tory leaflet through the door since moving in, we had to Google the guy before we realised he was a Tory. The leaflet made no mention of the Conservative party, had no logos, nothing in the “small text” etc. It was like six pages long, and from reading it, you’d have no idea what party he was with. This isn’t isolated either, I’ve seen mention of other Tory MPs doing the same thing with local leaflets on Reddit, and I think our old MP had removed all Conservative party logos from his before we moved.
There does seem to be a fair few now that are trying to distance themselves from the “image” of the party.

These days I minimise
These days I minimise journeys where I might need to use a bike rack. The last two sum up my experience. One was a trip to St Georges Hospital in south London. Lots of bikes locked up on racks, but the only racks available weren’t actually attached to the ground. I had no other option, and thankfully my bike was still there when I returned. The second was a trip to a shop, where the racks were close to the shopping trolley storage. I don’t know exactly what had happened, but when I returned my rear mudguard was destroyed and the rear wheel was jammed against the frame and wouldn’t move. Whoever hit must’ve really hit it hard and I still can’t work out how it would’ve happed course, just like those awful cyclists that presumably unlicenced and unregistered pedestrian left the scene. I couldn’t even ask if anyone had recorded their licence plate because pedestrians still don’t wear them.

It doesn’t seem to clarify the nature of professional driving. Given that taxi drivers are some of the most anti-social around, and many lorry drivers don’t live up to their own hype, I’m not sure such a category really exists.
