I have an Ortlieb Quick Rack that I’m very happy with, I also bought the mudguard you can fit to it.

A juggernaut thunders up behind you. Suddenly it veers sharply to the right and crashes, causing untold damage to the country(side). Someone slowly emerges from the cab, it’s the current leader of the Conservative Party (whoever that is this week). When questioned they claim to have no knowledge of who has been driving the vehicle for the last 13 years. It is suggested that perhaps it would be better if somebody else drove for a while, but they dismiss this as woke nonsense.

I find the vast majority of drivers pass me without issue. Almost as if safely overtaking a cyclist is not that difficult, requiring only a moderate amount of skill and a little patience.

As now Wesh labour has handed the keys to the Senedd to whoever can make political headway on this “wedge issue”,  it’s a gift to both Plaid, the Conservatives and the Lib Dems. This is a vanity project that will morph into a poison chalice,  and it isn’t just Welsh Labour who will pay the price for this, but all who live in Wales.  Partially if the party led by RT Davies gain the most traction on this issue.

A week is a long time in politics, the next Welsh Parliament elections are in 2026. I’d be very surprised if the current kerfuffle was anything but a distant memory by then.

As far as safety goes, if there are weather warnings in place then I would avoid cycling if possible.

I try to time my cycle rides to avoid rain, mostly because I don’t like cleaning my bike (I have full mudguards but they don’t catch everything). I’m less bothered about getting myself wet, so long as I can have a shower afterwards. But it’s no fun if you have to sit in damp clothes.

About 10 years ago I bought a Nikon 1 V1 (it was something of comercial failure and could be picked up quite cheap). It’s been my only ‘proper’ camera and I’ve been very happy with it – small enough to take when I go hillwalking or snowboarding and picture quality that’s good enough for anything short of professional photography.

However, I find myself using it less and less as time goes on. Mobile phone cameras keep getting better and better, so I tend to use my phone and leave the camera at home.

DP Review is good for camera reviews and Flickr has a Camera Finder which is quite interesting.

As with many driving crimes, if the police don’t see you doing it then it’s difficult to prosecute. The driver could also claim in court to have been flashing their lights for some other reason, but I doubt that would be believed.

My understanding is that the main thing causing ambulance delays is the Handover Delays, and that the time spent driving to the patient is not a significant factor.

If I was cynical I might think that LTNs were being used as a convenient scapegoat.

    Looking at the traffic count

Looking at the traffic count for the A30 there are probably around 100,000 motor vehicles in 72 hours, so 500 offences doesn’t seem that many.

    I’d recommend reading Stories

I’d recommend reading Stories of the Law and How It’s Broken by The Secret Barrister.

I think the problem is not that we have an adversarial system, it’s that all parts of the system (police, CPS, lawyers, courts) are massively underfunded. Trying to do justice on the cheap will result in a mess no matter what system you have.
