Shimano cleats are easier to walk in (slightly) than looks. I used to go through look cleats really quickly until I realised i was dragging a foot while stopping I get about 18 months out of the left foot don’t think I’ve changed my right now years. The little black rubber bits on looks are useless

Think the caad12 is a carbon steerer so please use a torque wrench. On my evo the torque was 5-6Nm from memory although I had to use assembly compound and +1Nm of torque to stop it slipping.

Only you can answer if a 32 is for you

    1) what’s your fitness like?

    2) how heavy are you?

    3) how hilly is your local area?

11-32 works fine on a shortcage Ultegra derailleur but Make sure your chain is long enough so you can cross chain. I wouldn’t recommend ridding it cross chained but these things do happen when your blowing out of your arse up a col. 52-36 with 11-32 I have tried briefly but wouldn’t recommend cross chain was scary.

i choose my gearing based on where I’m going to ride. locally we don’t have any climbs longer than 10 minutes so I can slog up on 52/36-11/28  if I’m traveling I look at where I’m going a decide then if in doubt 50/34-11/32  nothing wrong with big gears

Alot of its in the head had a similar experience due to seriously bad planning. Anything I’ve ridden before/since like it has been fine but I’ve understood exactly what I’m getting into. I’ve tried 11-28 and 11-32 on a compact in the mountains and didn’t really notice a big difference between them it’s always hard as f#ck!
Running power helps with pacing but just because you can sit at X watts for 2 hours means nothing in the mountains. The only way of doing any training for it in the UK has got to be a trainer.

Ah we nearly did the Marmotte
Ah we nearly did the Marmotte route it’s stunning round their nothing in the UK compares really.
Our plan was to do d’huez in the morning , lunch and then an easy ride in the afternoon.
What happened was we all smashed it up d’huez like we were racing for yellow. At the top Someone said we might as well do the rest of the Marmotte route (out of order though) Zero planning, zero idea of distances, zero in the tank.
Got to the top of Galibier and bailed back down my body didn’t break but my mind did. We had no idea how far the top was and it just destroyed me. Was it 5k or 10k left to the top? was it 50k to the end? Stupid.
Planned to go back this year but probably will be next year now.

Frames flex alot if they didn’t they’d be horrible to ride the place you really notice it is on a trainer.

As stated check for cracks though just to be safe!

    All depends on your
All depends on your confidence level if you brake alot on decents in the UK then in the Alps I wouldn’t ride carbon.
I’m not that confident decending when we did d’huez last year I was the slowest down. I wouldn’t run carbon some of the decents are over 20k and my wheels were a little warm. I have to force myself not to brake drag.

Does it only happen when you
Does it only happen when you pedal then?

Have you followed the Shimano manual while tunning? Lots of people think they know how to setup a derailleur but don’t.

Chain too long and rubbing on itself in lower gears?

    B-screw adjusted correctly?

Are you sure it’s not chain rub on the front derailleur?

So frustrating when you can’t identify an issue I feel your pain!

    Quick and easy check for
Quick and easy check for carbon is to get a coin and tap it repeatedly on a known good part of the tube and then move towards the damaged area and around it. A change in tone would suggest their maybe some hidden damage. Only 100% way is to ultrasound it.
Doesn’t look that bad just annoying

    Not much difference I’d
Not much difference I’d imagine you’d be slightly more susceptible to cross winds but not much more at alot of that comes down to profile.
As an example I went from a 50mm old school pointy carbon wheels to ‘new’ fat round profile wheels. The old wheels used to scare the life out of me in anything above 12mph winds the new ones I’m happy riding them at 16mph. Have to take it easy going down hill but it’s not a white knuckle ride as it was before.

Bad luck hope you get it back
Bad luck hope you get it back. Keep an eye on the Facebook groups as well.
A bike was stolen at a sportive I attended a few years ago fortunately someone saw the guy putting the bike in the back of a car and was followed. The police stopped him on the M40 dressed in lycra to blend in. My bike never gets left at a sportive unless it has a cafe lock and then only reluctantly. My thinking is a thief will have hundreds of other nice bikes to nick and cutting a small lock will be a bit obvious.

in reply to: How much hassle is it to swap chainset rings? #894277

    Swapping cranksets is easy
Swapping cranksets is easy five minute job after the first go. You will have to change the front derailleur height. Download the dealer manual from shimano gives u a step by step guide on making the adjustments. Swapping rings is just as easy but takes a bit longer.

I normally swap rings but this year I’ve been going up a hill regularly which is a barstard. The good thing about 50/32 is with an ultegra shortcage you can run a 105 11/32 if your going to the mountains you can’t do it with 52/36 safely I’ve tried the chain line is interesting with shirt stays.
