I have a tripple on my old winter bike and really don’t see the point yeah you have a closer ratio between gears but you can get the equivalent granny gear on a compact it’s also a pain to keep running properly I very rarely use the 30 ring. On my tripple lowest is 30/25 and on my compact for hills i change the cassette and have 34/30 which is actually lower gearing than the tripple. I live with the tripple because it’s on my junk winter bike but i’d never buy another one. The only good think i can say about the tripple is because its actually higher geared than the compact getting some serious speed up is easy.

He has a point the only way
He has a point the only way he thought he could win was to cheat because most pro’s at the time were doing the same. But Lance was Evil and wrecked many peoples Lives to keep his secret he can say what he want’s in anyway he wants but it just never sounds sincere.

will work fine on a short cage no issues. My bike came with this setup for some reason 28 would have been for me at anything below 10%

I have one got it for
I have one got it for Christmas has taken a while for me to get used to it compared to my old fluid trainer. You can download workouts from tacx for free and video workouts (pay) but they aren’t very well documented so you have to do research on their website. I tend to do my own custom ones anyway so not an issue and can programed in the app easily. They do several types of workout slope, power, heartrate and you can then program your intervals against each in time or distance. You can download the app and run it in demo mode by the way.
I tend to do slope and then aim for a power kind of non-intuitive but it works for me. The vortex will only go up to 7 degree slope IF you weigh under 75kg above that and it will be less (they have a table on their website) if you want more than this you need to upgrade or use higher gears to fake it which kind of defeats the point.

The app is pretty basic at the moment although tacx have promised to add features the major one being you can’t export workouts to Garmin/ training peaks/ strava which is madness. I use my garmin which picks up the ant+ channels from it so not an issue for me. Budget for a Bluetooth/Ant+ heart rate strap like wahoos one its not 100% necessary but if you want to show/do a heart rate based workout it is. The ant+ stick for iPad is silly money so I bought the wahoo and use it for running also for £10 more. The iPad mount works really well you can pick it up for £30 all the other bits are unnecessary just buy the cheapest tire you can find if you want don’t bother with ‘special tires’.
The only real issue is it can take several attempts to find the resistance brake requiring several app restarts but when it finds it I haven’t had a drop.

Really long but probably not to many real world reviews I’d give it 7/10 and with the promised software updates & fixes probably 8 if they opened up and allow trainer roads etc probably more.

    Bugger not 4iii Brimbrothers
Bugger not 4iii Brimbrothers is speedplay only. 4iiii won’t work for me either unless I change crank set I have FSA carbon arms.

The 4iii system is speed play
The 4iii system is speed play only which could be a problem. Speed play pedals seem pretty expensive (on wiggle at least £80) i’ve got two bikes and am looking to get a third so would be expensive to change system. If DC Rainmaker gives any cheap power meter a good review i will probably sign up.

I think it’s luck a lot of the time I put a set of gp4000S on at the beginning of last season (25mm) at got a split and puncture from An unseen small piece of glass in 100 feet. I was slightly pissed off! I repaired it and then did 3000 miles without another puncture including a 100 mile sportive in the pouring rain whilst everyone around was puncturing multiple times hopeing to get home. So from the first 100 feet I,d say gp4000s are utter rubbish but from the other 3000mile I’d say they are great infact I’ve got a new set on order.

As for width I’m in the wider camp I have a set of 23mm gators but find them hard riding and unnerving when it gets a bit wet.

I use strava search to find local routes other people have done that I haven’t done before I then download them and us gpsies.com to draw over them with any mods I want to make. Gpsies will also add route guidance but not as good as ridewithgps. If ridewithgps would add turn-by-turn to imported routes that would be killer. I then load the routes on my garmin.

Some good sense on trying to find a middle point on spec between the 2 models. Only thing I would probably say is you can probably find a felt at a local bike shop to try.

    I have a Z4 so an ultegra
I have a Z4 so an ultegra build and love it. Now have 3500 miles on it with no issues other than usual servicing. I’ve done upto 100 miles on it without any issues but I might just be lucky that I’ve never really suffered any aches or pains. It soaks up bumps really well although my old ALu bike is now not to far away from it on new rims with wider rubber before it was shockingly harsh.

Personally I’m looking at a canyon with more aggressive geometry next year now my fitness and flexibility have come on. I can’t imagine not using the z4 on the long runs over 60 miles.

I don’t think you can go wrong with either. My brother in law has just upgraded to the cAnyon endurance in carbon will hAve a go on it on New Year’s Day if I get a chance.

    Mixed. 2 longish zone 2/3
Mixed. 2 longish zone 2/3 rides if i can a week. 1 x trainer session (probably sufferfest). At 1 to 2 30 minute runs with some body weight/stretching after.

If the weather is bad i will do a bit more on the trainer but after 1 1/2 hours i’m normally bored to death.
