Earlier this year, Giro updated two of its flagship performance shoes, the Imperial II and Empire SLX II, claiming they deliver “superior performance”. We’ve already seen French rider Paul Seixas racing in Giro shoes, and you can currently pick up the Boa-equipped Imperial II for £299 – a saving of £101 off the RRP.

Giro says the Imperial II “delivers every feature the fastest racers demand”. The latest version features a new forged carbon outsole, which the brand claims increases stiffness by 20Nm.

The new vent configuration and the carbon ‘Airframe’ reduces the amount of foam used have apparently led to a 16 per cent improvement in airflow, and at 260g for a medium it is quite light.

Although it’s expensive, it boasts world class safety credentials with a five star Virginia Tech rating, thanks to the Mips Air Node liner.
