Altura Podium Progel Bib Short

Designed for high performance riding, Altura's Podium range aims to please racers and weekend riders alike. Their Progel shorts fit the bill, especially if you're a fan of longer length shorts.

Much like the corresponding Podium jersey that I was testing at the same time and reviewed recently, when you first put them on, the Podium Progels feel like a premium bit of kit that could easily cost 30 or 40 quid more.

The mesh on the shoulder straps is comfortable and forgiving without being too loose, and the shaped panels contoured around my legs and backside well. One thing I noticed was that they aren't quite as compressive as other performance shorts I've tested. The Progels aren't loose or baggy in any way – far from it – but neither are they quite as 'painted on' as some bibs. Then again, although I like the feeling of a really supportive pair of shorts, for longer, more leisurely rides this slightly more relaxed fit could be a plus.

One thing I wasn't so keen on with the Progels is the leg length. The legs stop at least an inch closer to my knees than most of my other shorts. In itself it's not a particular problem, it's just that my personal preference is for shorts that end a bit higher up my leg, so I can hide my tanlines when wearing casual shorts around town or down to the pub.

Also, the grippers aren't as secure as those on some pairs of performance shorts. The Progels never shifted around majorly, but if you like your shorts to absolutely stay where they are, these lose a point or two.

The pad in the shorts was perfectly adequate on long rides. It's not the most complicated or advanced of shapes or materials, but although it might not quite match the top end performance of more expensive shorts, it was never uncomfortable or annoying, so no points docked here.

I also found the shorts material plenty breathable without being unusable on cooler days. After testing the matching Podium jersey, it seemed that the range was designed for hot weather. But with the longer legs and no out-of-the-ordinary considerations to keeping you cool, this theme doesn't necessarily carry across to their shorts. It isn't really a problem when looking at the Podium Progel shorts in isolation, but maybe something to note if you're looking for a set of bibs and matching jersey.

Price wise, I think these shorts are definitely good value. Their performance is very close to much more expensive shorts, and if you're a fan of longer legs then the Podium Progels are well worth considering.
