Remco Evenpoel’s Vuelta defence has gone up in smoke and we’re not even at the penultimate climb of stage 13, the Belgian dropping out the front of the race on the Aubisque, along with João Almeida and is now well back.
Jumbo-Visma are unsurprisingly pushing on with their big three stars still in contact. Juan Ayuso, Marc Soler, Enric Mas, Aleksandr Vlasov and Mikel Landa are all up front too.

The Dutch team was well beaten today, Olav Kooij fading in the final 100m, Ethan Vernon and Danny van Poppel contesting the bike throw. Stage win number five of the week for the Dutch…
There were a couple of crashes that overshadowed the run into Harlow, Fernando Gaviria abandoning after the first of the two before half the peloton was brought down in a high-speed pile-up near the finish. Fingers crossed everyone made it out of that one as fit and healthy as you can be.
No prizes for guessing who’s getting the combativity award again tonight. The only issue might be the tension within the team that overspilled into a police incident at today’s start…

Over in the Netherlands, Charlotte Kool won the second sprint of the week at the Simac Tour, again compatriot Lorena Wiebes having to settle for second. The weekend promises to be an emotional farewell to Annemiek van Vleuten, with enough lumpiness on the route to tease the thought of a perfect farewell to one of the sport’s greats.

With Evenpoel a distant memory, Jumbo-Visma completed one of the most memorable Grand Tour mountain stage performances in recent history, pulling off a quite ridiculous 1-2-3 on the Vuelta’s French adventure up the Tourmalet.
Fittingly, it was two-time Tour champ Jonas Vingegaard who took the stage win, taking off with seven kilometres to go and never looking like being caught as Sepp Kuss and Primož Roglič enjoyed a free ride behind (as free a ride as you can have up the Tourmalet).
With the stage win secured, Kuss set off after his teammate, crossing the line 30 seconds behind, Roglič then coming into shot three seconds behind.

Jeremy Vine’s editing game has reached quite incredible levels… (enticed by £3 tickets for National Cinema Day, this live blogger may or may not have enjoyed last Saturday’s sunshine by watching Jurassic Park indoors, I’m starting to wonder how long before we get trailers for Vine’s Nolanesque productions beforehand)… sorry, I got distracted, where were we?
Yes, in one minute we get: the original footage, an introductory message, a message on the side of the offending vehicle, mood-setting music, replays, CSI zooming in, analysis, and a plot twist that the driver actually waved a hand of apology that Vine concludes “means so much” and he has “accepted”. What a rollercoaster…

My comments were tongue in cheek, but my home city has lost its speedway track, showground, its only public indoor swimming pool, public all weather football pitches, a huge public playing field and it's athletics track is under threat. Lots of supermarkets and fast food takeaways have been gained. Work/life balance is being eroded. I do worry about what life in the UK will be like in say 50 years time.
@Rendel Harris I wouldn’t worry too much about that, a family member once said I looked like a circus bear when riding my Brompton.
I can ride no hands and once rode three kilometres from Parliament Square to Blackfriars Bridge without touching the bars just to prove I could to a certain doubting spouse, but apart from vainly posing for pictures like this one (for the benefit of a certain PBU who's seen fit previously to compare me to an elephant on a unicycle yes, it's a small bike (I ride everything from 54 to 58) and yes my BMI is 26.5) I don't bother. I'm never on a ride when it's necessary and it's always safer just to stop for a few seconds to take jackets etc on and off.
I've gone the other way. I could never really wheelie or bunnyhop properly, but I was idiotically proud (still am, obvs) of my ability to casually roll a cigarette riding no-hands whilst filtering Fleet Street traffic during a brief bike-courier era of my life. I tried to open a cereal bar the other day while riding gently downhill along a wide empty country road, and nearly crapped myself in fear. The thought of trying to get a jacket on or off - with this shoulder - I couldn't countenance. Lucky I don't smoke any more.
Never mind wheelies or no hands, I haven't even managed to find reverse gear on mine! I have laughed off many wheelie requests; I feel no need to - on my recumbent (IIRC someone has). But... I'm not entirely free of the feeling I *ought* to be able to on at least one bike...
I can't wheelie and only recently have managed to cycle no handed - and only on my Tern GSD, not my road bike. And even then, I can't do anything like undo a top or open some food whilst cycling no handed.
Chapeau for finding the Hans Rey pic, the chimp looks properly appreciative of his skills. I used to be able to ride no hands on my Peugeot racers in the late 80s and early 90s, I could cycle all the way home from Camberley McDonald's to my home in mill lane, yateley, without touching the bars once, thumbs in my rear jeans pockets, after a close, post and very post midnight, only with no other vehicles about. But when I got run over in 92, clock house, Farnborough, and went MTB, the front end was just a bit too nervous, and then the late 90s Raleigh 650 ti was even more, but of course that meant it was a very responsive xc racer. I could ride my surly ogre no hands, much more stable platform, and I have gone as far as sitting back, but wouldn't want the foolishness of hurting myself if I got it wrong. Moved to Brum in the late 90s, obtained the getting to work bike, marin pine mountain 91, and because I was very much urban, for the first time ever really, lady pool rd, top end of Moseley, I would ride down the hill to canon hill park, drop the seat all the way down and worked on trying to develop my bike skills. The wheelie being the one most wanted. I did alright, easy to pull, but keeping it going for distance was the one thing I never got, handful of seconds at most, never went over the back badly, just the fear would get too much. For some reason I found the endo easier to do and hold, still not for long mind, and could do a good 180 endo. My bunny hopping developed nicely too. There are rigs that allow you to practice finding the balance point while stationary, LBS had one on their Halloween open evening one year. I refused to embarrass myself in public. I can do no hands, eat, rain jacket on/off but the wheelie evades me. It's sad and I feel like I'm a bit shit at bikes because of it.
With modern bikes the front assembly is so much lighter and more likely to rotate if it hits a minor imperfection in the road. There are so many potholes, cracks etc these days. I have nearly crashed a few times after hitting potholes with both hands on the handlebars. It isn't worth taking the risk.

The onus is on the lorry driver to gauge how fast the oncoming traffic is approaching – motorised or not – and then to decide how best to make their manoeuvre in a way that doesn’t cause oncoming traffic to have to brake or take avoiding action.
(That said – I wish JV would calm his videos down a bit: I find the amount of “wacky” additional animation &c becoming increasingly annoying… YMMV)

Let’s suppose the van was maybe 20m away but looked like it was 40m away, his 15mph therefore appears to be 30mph as he covers the real 20m in the same time that he appears to cover 40m.
All of the comments that he get’s about speed or distance obviously are fooled by this as I don’t believe for a minute that he’s either going too quickly or accelerates into situations.
Maybe it’s time for JV to get a camera as well with a “normal” lens (sorry, don’t know the correct optical description!) so he can also show selected incidents in the same way our eyes see them

I’ve made the mistake of getting involved in that twitter thread. Apparently, every driver would have stopped to let the van go and even if they didn’t, none of them would have got upset if the van had turned in front of them anyway.
