Two friends have cycled to all 20 Premier League stadiums in England to raise money for a children’s hospice.

Chris Scott and Shaun Spence covered 850 miles (1,367km) in eight days in aid of Acorns Children’s Hospice. They started at Newcastle United’s ground St James’ Park and finished at Southampton’s stadium, St Mary’s on Saturday at about 17:00 BST.

The pair, both aged 37 and from Wythall, wanted to support the hospice, whose headquarters in Worcestershire, is at the end of their roads, The BBC reports.

If you want to donate to the guys worthy cause, you can do so here.

Roglic takes risks even on rest days

A post shared by Primoz Roglic (@primozroglic)

Following his ‘no risk, no glory’ antics at the Vuelta last week, yesterday, on the rest day, Roglic posted a picture showing he isn’t afraid to take a few, potentially Grand Tour ending risks, even when he’s not on a bike.

While I’m sure Rog is more than capable of balancing on a railing, some people who saw the picture did question whether it was the best idea, with one person commenting ‘Team Movistar approves this’.

A new study has ranked the percentage of top tier cyclists from each country.

The interactive data set, produced by the Global Odds Index, also ranks a persons’ odds of being a professional rider, based on their nationality.

Topping the list of pro-cycling producing countries was Italy, at 9.3 per cent, with France at 7.6 per cent and Belgium at third, 7 per cent.

The UK was unsurprisingly a little lower down narrowly ahead of Denmark at 2.45 per cent.

The tool also allows you to do the same thing for other sports, such as football, tennis and athletics.

London skateboarding brand Palace has teamed up with Cannondale to produce a unique looking new bike which they call the ‘Mad Boy.’

Palace’s first bike gives a new name to the Bad Boy, the signature hybrid city bike from Cannondale.

Pricing has yet to be announced, but the Mad Boy bike could cost around $2,000 (£1,452) when it goes on sale on Friday.

School urges parents to walk or cycle as it bans dropping off kids in cars

A school has banned parents from the surrounding roads at pick up and drop off times, in a bid to tackle traffic levels.

Cadland Primary School was one of three selected for Hampshire County Council’s School Streets trial, which will involve roads being closed off to parents during drop-off and pick-up.

The hope is that parents will walk or cycle their children to school, with affected roads remaining open to residents, emergency services, blue badge holders, deliveries and businesses, the Lymington Times report.

Local counsellor, Alexis McEvoy, said: “It comes to the point where you have to say enough is enough.

“The situation has been that parents are trying to jockey for position to park, and I have even seen parents stopping and letting their kids out onto the main road.

“The other issue is the inconvenience for those who live there, and the health implications of exhaust fumes, particularly for the little ones.

“No doubt there will be some complaints. Parents will say they are in a hurry, but they will just have to leave earlier.”

Bike repair shop applies for booze licence

A bicycle repair shop has applied for an alcohol licence meaning people can have a pint while they wait for their bike to be fixed.

Honeysuckle Wood Bicycle and Retro Homeware submitted a licensing application to serve alcohol for consumption on and off the premises, Wales Online reports.

The shop is also, of course, located in a building that used to be a pub.

The application for the licence says: “We wish to expand our business to offer teas and coffee, but also a chance to try local craft beers that are supplied by local micro breweries.”

Bikes and beers, what’s not to like?

Tom Pidcock explains why he missed MTB World Championships

I know some people are puzzled why I would chose a grand tour over the Mtb worlds. But for development, riding a grand tour is much more beneficial. And after the Olympics I mentally couldn’t stay on it enough to be in top shape for MTB worlds. It was nothing to do with the team

— Tom Pidcock (@Tompid) August 29, 2021

The 22-year-old Ineos Grenadiers rider said that he decided to take part in the Vuelta a España instead because it would be better for his future development.

Fair enough. But after his dominating performance in Tokyo it would have been great to see what he could have done at the Worlds.

Sarah Storey won her second gold medal of Tokyo 2020 in the C5 time trial on Tuesday morning. In doing so she also drew level with the swimmer Mike Kenny as the most successful British Paralympian of all time.

The 43-year-old dominated the time trial, winning by 92 seconds as British team-mate Crystal Lane-Wright took silver. Storey now has the opportunity to win a 17th gold in Thursday’s road race.

Campaign launched to remind motorists that 'cyclists are also people'

A new social media campaign seeks to highlight to motorists that every cyclist is also a person with a family.

Joanne Ness, from Birmingham, launched the “More than a Cyclist” message after a fatal crash involving a friend.

Last year, 140 cyclists died on Britain’s roads.

The images, released as part of the campaign, show “the human face of a cyclist” and remind motorists “please just give us two metres”.

“Cars are machines, they’re killing machines,” she said. “Roads are there to be shared – please don’t hurt us.”

Praising the graphics, road.cc readers suggested a campaign of leaflets, similar to anti-littering posters, might also be useful.

Others added their own versions of the poster…

A woman has been jailed after she stole a bike from inside a police station.

Jane McGrath, from Warrington, took the bike from a cycle store in the van dock area of Cheshire Police’s facility in Runcorn at around midday on Saturday, August 21, Runcorn and Widnes World report. Police say McGrath also caused ‘unsanitary damage to a cell’ after being arrested.

The force did not clarify if it was a police bicycle, or one that had previously been stolen from a member of the public and recovered.

The 43-year-old admitted burglary, criminal damage and failing to comply with supervision requirements at Warrington Magistrates Court on Monday, August 23.

She was locked up for 19 weeks and told to pay compensation of £55 plus a £73 victim surcharge.

An umbrella for cyclists? Is it dangerous? Is it a terrible idea? Who knows?

German design company Rainrider has come up with a unique invention that, possibly, we didn’t need.

The Rain Rider is a lightweight (1.5kg), ‘aerodynamic’, UV-resistant umbrella that protects cyclists from the elements. The umbrella costs €129.95 (£114) and the company say the device will fit almost all bikes.

It doesn’t “have to be done”, but it’s a free(ish) country and if someone wants to start a campaign they are free to do so. This might blow your mind, but in reality 100% of people know that cyclists are human beings.

I mean, some dude started a campaign to prove to flat-earthers that the Earth is round (https://www.gofundme.com/f/5mgaa-send-a-flat-earther-to-space).

Really the campaign possibilities are endless.

Won’t work. Any one that does go will claim that the windows on their shuttle are curved. They already make that claim. And EVEN IF they did get back and understand that the world is round…Their idiotic followers will simply claim they were paid off. This is a pointless campaign.

There’s a huge difference in knowing that they’re human and having the attitude that they’re a nuisance. This campaign is highlighting the fact that folk who cycle have some form of relationship and are loved by other people and by personalising this makes it more subjective. After I was clattered a couple of years back a number of work colleagues admitted to me that they had changed their behaviours/attitudes towards those who cycle and were much more patient with them.  I’d rather it not have taken for me to go through what I did to effect this change   But it really brought it home to them that one of cyclists are actually people with feelings and family.

There have been some very long running roadworks in my town. After about 6 months overrun they put some signs up that then lasted almost a year asking people not to abuse the workers. All framed around them being someone’s Dad.

        its just shortcut human

its just shortcut human psychology 101, the defining visible attribute of someone who is a cyclist to the majority of people in the UK is going to be someone wearing a bike helmet and lycra.

and its also that type of clothing which probably suffers the most from the ability of people to dehumanise riders as an out group.

I might have been tempted to show the rider with a bike and pick different clothing choices to highlight the difference more, as the older guy could literally look like he is riding a bike in either get up, and his keep the lights on job isnt clearly defined by his work clothing,

like I presume theyll have picked an NHS worker as well for this campaign, as that is more a visible difference and likely for people to make that emotional connection with better.

but its focussed on the face and eyes, which is why you wont see any rider with the latest Oakleys in this campaign.

Indeed. We have a huge problem in the UK with cycling being viewed by many only as a sport, instead of a valid mode of transport. Defaulting to the lycra/helemt/hi-viz stereotype only serves to reinforce this attitude. We need more people to see the bike as a tool for enhancing their everyday lives, rather than just a device used for trying to win olympic medals.

Should have used an old lady for the campaign model: “She’s not just your nan, she’s a cyclist!”

Hilda likes watching Coronation Street and cycling to the shops to pick up bread and milk in the mornings…

Exactly – and for the record

Exactly – and for the record i don’t want to be ‘more than a cyclist’. I am quite happy being just a cyclist.

The rat politicians and the tabloids should be made to pay for this though – they are the ones who vilified anyone who dared not aspire to driving some environment molesting SUV everywhere.

Who else finds it mind-numbingly depressing that this has to be done?

Personally, I think it is good.  Facebook is littered with messages about the Highway Code changes, yet all the comments are about how all cyclists go through red lights, don’t have lights at night, think the world owes them a living, should be contributing to the upkeep of roads if not demanding they pay road tax.  I countered one really agressive nutter the other day with the line about 60 people a day are killed or seriously injured on our roads.  By drivers.  His response?  If only they  were all cyclists…

Four examples of why this has

Four examples of why this has to be done: Cyclist riding safely on the lefthand side of the road, a motorist on the wrong side of the drives into the cyclist and kills him – At the trial, the women judge decided that the accident was the fault of the cyclist because if he was not on the road there would have not been an accident – she refused to change her mind.

Mother teaching daughter to drive – waiting to pull out into the main road, Daughter pulls out, mother shouts “stop stop something is coming”, daughter replies  ” it’s ok mum, it was only a cyclist”.

Women minister of transport in a radio interview said “all accidents to cyclists are caused by cyclists”

Women motorist waiting at the traffic lights next to a cycling club, the lights change to green –  the motorist served violently to the left knocking the whole club run to the ground – she got out of the car and said: ” let that teach you a lesson” she then drove off. At the trial, she was let off. She was an ambulance driver and she never even stopped to see if anybody was injured.

      This is all true.

The female minister of transport was Barbara Castle -1965 to 1968.

Claim two was from a letter (it was a long time ago) sent to a newspaper by the mother – she refused to teach her daughter to drive ever again.

Claim one came from what was then called the CTC gazette( now  Cycling UK) or cycling weekly, a long time ago – I’ve read cycling weekly for 63 years so not certain when it was.

Claim four happened to my cycling club – The Middlesex Clarion C & AC in south London about 50 years ago – I was on the club run and remember what happened very clearly.

if you are going to highlight

if you are going to highlight Pidcocks tweet about not being at MTB worlds, isnt also fair to cover what he said in the press conference at La Vuelta rest day, in that La Vuelta was a target to race all year,

which he wasnt even sure he could do after the Olympics as he had the classic post Olympic success/deflation comedown and is only now getting his bike mojo back plus has been suffering with tendonitis in his knee, which needs to get fixed post Worlds.

    Poor phrasing on the Safe

Poor phrasing on the Safe Streets piece.

“A school has banned parents from the surrounding roads at pick up and drop off times, in a bid to tackle traffic levels.”

I doubt very much the School had much say in it – this would have been a local council decision where the school was a partner at best.

My wife was Chair of Governors for a School – the head was forever getting it in the neck from both Pro and Anti car drop off parents when parking and enforcement was actually beyond their control.  The school does not control the roads outside it.

Weird isn’t it? The main benefit would be for rain driving from the front, although how would you get fast enough for that to be the main issue with that drag? and would the structure be able to cope?…..

Just think of the advantages with a following wind!  OK, your back will get wet, but you’d get a pb without even pedalling.

That was my first thought! When I lived in Belgium for a while as a kid in the ’70s we visited Holland quite a bit and I remember seeing old-timers with foldable kites on their backs that could be opened in tailwinds – always been surprised nobody’s come up with a modern version.

Just to clear something up – contrary to what has been written here, my original comment wasn’t aimed at Rendel Harris but at the comment posted earlier which (without evidence) listed a host of anti-female allegations which struck me as deliberately misogynistic.

Anyway, as that comment now appears to have been deleted it’s all forgotten.

@mitsky To be fair (through gritted teeth), hasn't the main damage to Hammersmith Bridge been from IRA bombings and boat strikes, though obviously exacerbated by heavy traffic in the subsequent years?

@Andrewbanshee Yes, and at every age, not just at our distinguished and noble years (I'm 57). I've known several people who have been a bit vain about having to start wearing glasses and so put it off for years even when it was quite obvious that they wouldn't pass the driving test "read a numberplate at twenty metres" requirement (which is itself inadequate, in my opinion). As I understand it, in the USA driver licences to be renewed every four to eight years, depending on the state (apart from Arizona and Massachusetts which are twelve years, for some reason), and an eye test is a compulsory element of renewal. High time that was introduced here.

In fairness, at the time they came out Rapha was also constantly offering deep discounts - it's only more recently they've done away with that - so they were basically just following the Rapha model.

@Krislord Yeah this is a pre-pack job by the looks of it. One of those things that seems like it shouldn't be legal, but somehow manages to be. Like all ubiquitous brands Le Col gets up people's noses. Cycling fashion has moved on a bit in the last couple of years too and you see more PNS and Universal Colours in Richmond Park these days. I feel a bit old for some of that stuff and I still like Le Col because they offer plenty of understated kit.

Indeed. I am now 60, although unlike many licence holders I have an assessment every 3 years. I am type one diabetic. Part of the assessment is proof that my eyesight is good enough. Why aren't health checks part of being a licence holder?

"In a report, Hammersmith & Fulham Council were told that conservative estimates for re-opening the bridge to cars were £300 million. In contrast, between 2010 and 2021, London councils spent a total of £100 million on all bridges in the city. So cost is clearly the overwhelming factor,..." Tell us that motorists don't pay enough for the damage done to roads, without telling us. (Yes, I have a driving licence.) And given we know that if the motor vehicle has more mass, the far greater the damage done... should businesses pay more? I won't say road tax, but something that contributes to the general tax pot that funds road repair. And needless to say: the business owners need to pay more tax too rather than hoard the profits.
