Since the forever chemicals historically found in durable water repellent coatings were banned, or at least are being investigated by regulatory bodies, the industry has shifted to PFAS-free alternatives. While friendlier to the environment, sometimes they’re just not as effective, quickly washing away after a few rides and allowing water through. But today, the brand behind ceramic coatings for cars, boats and bikes, Gtechniq, has unveiled its own DWR coating – meet Fabric Proof.

Nearly every kind of waterproof jacket, and even most trousers and shorts, comes with a PFAS-free DWR coating. And that’s a great thing, as it’ll help water bead up and roll off the garments’ surface. But eventually, any DWR coating will wear and wash away, so at some point, it’ll need topping up. Some of those coatings might require heat activation, which means a trip through the tumble dryer in order to apply. Tumble drying can be fairly aggressive, especially as heat’s involved, so it could harm your pricey cycling garbs.

However, Gtechniq’s Fabric Proof aims to solve all of the problems found with your standard DWR coatings. First off, to apply, it’s a very simple case of spraying it onto your chosen garment and letting it cure for three hours.

Fabric Proof comes with a bunch of claims, as the brand states that it can cope better in high-abrasion areas (saddle areas and where a backpack will sit) and, generally, it’s more durable. Gtechniq goes on to say that a single application can last up to 10 wash cycles, which is three to four times more than alternative options, according to the brand.

We’re told that the product can be used to add water protection to nearly anything textile-based. So that’s regular jerseys, bibs, softshell jackets, shoes and trousers. Of course, it can also be used to revitalise the waterproofing effectiveness of any existing jackets. On top of all that, Gtechniq says that Fabric Proof contains anti-microbial properties, so not only are you adding a fresh layer of waterproofing to whatever you like, but you’ll rid it of any smells.

Gtechniq Fabric Proof is available in two-sized bottles. The 500ml option promises to protect around four garments, depending on their sizes, while the 250ml bottle will do around half that, surprise, surprise.

If you’re keen to get your kit waterproofed, a 500ml bottle of Fabric Proof will set you back £29.95, while the 250ml bottle is priced at £15.95.
