Sadiq Khan't bunny hop reporter's bike

After hearing that ⁦@ShaunBaileyUK⁩ had a ride on my bike, ⁦@SadiqKhan⁩ said: “But did he do a bunny hop?”
Then this happened… pic.twitter.com/72pdZzxD3S

— Ross Lydall (@RossLydall) April 22, 2021

Don’t mind me starting the petition to add a bunny hopping challenge to all future election campaigns. Sadiq Khan did not want to be undone by his Tory rival Shaun Bailey, who took Evening Standard reporter Ross Lydall’s bike for a spin earlier in the day…Did Khan get off the ground? I am sure someone will leave a comment telling us we should probably give him the benefit of the doubt considering the respective campaigns of the two London mayoral favourites…

Despite yesterday claiming to be a keen cyclist, Bailey has pledged to rip out unwanted cycle lanes and LTNs within the first 100 days of his administration and he even suggested compensating taxi drivers over the High Court Streetspace ruling…

His Labour rival has backed building more cycling infrastructure and rocked up to his vaccination appointment in a Rapha tee. On the cycling front, that looks like it is 1-0 Khan.

I had that ⁦@ShaunBaileyUK⁩ on the back of my bike this morning in St James’ Park.
He clearly knows how to handle a bike.
This is what he had to say about cycling… pic.twitter.com/ArfeST28Ut

Chris Froome "slowly improving" and content with making the Tour of the Alps breakaway on stage four

— Chris Froome (@chrisfroome) April 22, 2021

Chris Froome in a breakaway is a rare sight for cycling fans. For all the hours we have seen him sat patiently at the end of a Sky train in the mountains, we have rarely seen him up the road. After yesterday’s stage, Froome said he was happy with how his condition is improving ahead of his main goal, the Tour de France, in July.

“I think this was the first time I have been in a breakaway since the Giro d’Italia of 2018,” he said. “I really enjoyed being up there today, testing the legs a bit. Especially as the break went away on a quite hard section after a bunch of attacks.

“It was a shame that we never got much of a gap, but it was still a good experience to be up there again. I can feel that the condition is slowly improving and I’m pretty happy with how the legs are feeling.”

Simon Yates, who Froome took the maglia rosa from after that long-range attack at the 2018 Giro, has one more day and a 58 second advantage to defend his race lead in the Alps. Stage five takes in five mountains before another downhill finish.

Prince Louis pictured riding Frog bike to nursery

Three tomorrow! 🚲

Taken earlier this week by The Duchess before he left for his first day of nursery, The Duke and Duchess are pleased to share a new image of Prince Louis. 🎈 pic.twitter.com/AGgfLI39tW

— The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (@KensingtonRoyal) April 22, 2021

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have celebrated Louis’ third birthday by releasing a photo of him riding a Frog Tadpole Balance Bike to his first day of nursery. William and Kate were said to be “delighted” to share the photo, as must be Frog Bikes too…

Frog’s co-owner last week claimed Brexit had cost them £250,000 in the first two months of 2021. Perhaps some royal publicity will help bump up sales…

Now we wait for the ‘why isn’t he wearing a helmet?’ reaction…

Mayor of London hits back at our claim he Khan't bunny hop...and he's got VAR proof

pic.twitter.com/0SbGOGUzj9

— Sadiq Khan (@SadiqKhan) April 23, 2021

That’s us told…Was there a clear and obvious error? The Mayor of London thought so, and he roped in the help of the VAR at Stockley Park for proof. After all, you can’t argue with the lines…

The referee has been called over to the monitor. He is going to take another look. “Yep, just rewind that bit there for me.” What is he going to give? He is running back onto the pitch, blows his whistle, makes the VAR sign and points to the spot. He has given it, it is a bunny hop after all…

Tony’s not convinced…

Not happy with where they’ve drawn the lines there… 😁

A63 cycling protester campaigns for newt sanctuary

The Hull Daily Mail reports this man has been campaigning to save a newt sanctuary by riding up and down the A63. According to a Facebook group raising awareness of the issue, a group of landlords hope to develop an area that will mean “any sign of the existence of the great crested newt will be obliterated.”

A passerby said the man was “causing vehicles to slow down and pull out causing congestion” and had “been seen around Hull over the past few days.” Another report claims the man’s sign was knocked off by a bus driver in a crash.

“It broke off his sign and he stood in front of our bus near Hull Royal holding up all the traffic,” a person on the bus at the time said. “He even called himself an ambulance – wasting vital NHS time. We were sat on the bus a good 40 minutes before a police officer and bus operator arrived and moved him out the way. Charges should be pressed against him and his reckless actions.”

Felix Großschartner wins final Tour of the Alps stage as Simon Yates secures overall victory

Third GC title for Simon Yates. Vuelta a España 2018, Tirreno-Adriatico 2020 and Tour of the Alps 2021. Adam Yates with 4 GC wins. #TotA pic.twitter.com/pyO8voFJm4

— ammattipyöräily (@ammattipyoraily) April 23, 2021

Bora-hansgrohe’s Felix Großschartner attacked solo on the final climb to win stage five of the Tour of the Alps. Nicolas Roche and Alessandro De Marchi also survived from the breakaway until the end to secure second and third.

Team BikeExchange Brit Simon Yates finished comfortably in the pack, securing his overall victory and putting down a statement win ahead of next month’s Giro d’Italia. Yates took control of the race with his stage victory on Tuesday and wins the leader’s jersey by 58 seconds from yesterday’s stage winner Pello Bilbao. Yates’ Giro rival, Astana climber Aleksandr Vlasov was third, 1:06 behind.

Take a look at Julian Alaphilippe's stunning new rainbow stripe Tarmac SL7

Wow, wow, wow 😍@iamspecialized has designed a stunning new rainbow stripe Tarmac SL 7, which @alafpolak1 will ride for the Spring’s final Monument – Liège-Bastogne-Liège – and the rest of the season! pic.twitter.com/rJOwA7GPyi

— Deceuninck-QuickStep (@deceuninck_qst) April 23, 2021

What a beauty. Definitely one of the top perks of being world champion…Fresh off his Flèche Wallonne win on Wednesday, Julian Alaphilippe has got his hands on his brand new Specialized Tarmac SL7 with rainbow stipes. Is it the best bike in the peloton?

Julian will debut it at Liège-Bastogne-Liège on Sunday where it could give him the extra edge to claim his first La Doyenne crown. This really is all about that fresh paint job, but for a closer look at his full set up, check out our Bike at Bedtime last month where we went for a deep dive into the world champ’s bike…

LGBTQ+ cycling group PRiDE OUT responds to British Cycling trans participation consultation

PRiDE OUT logo.PNG

PRiDE OUT, the largest network of LGBTQ+ cyclists in the UK, believes British Cycling’s trans policy needs to better “recognise there are human experiences behind the scenes of any consultation.” The group emphasised it is vital that trans people are treated with the same dignity and respect as other riders and should be engaged with.

From the feedback it has received so far, PRiDE OUT says there is an overwhelming demand to see more inclusion in cycling. Additionaly, the group called on British Cycling to align with the UCI’s guidelines requiring events below National Championship level to “have less stringent eligibility requirements” for any trans person wishing to compete.

“When I came out as trans 6 months ago, I felt an immense weight being lifted off my shoulders,” Emily Bridges, a former GB senior academy cyclist, said. “I got so much support and love, but I also got the expected hate, too. This vitriol is currently the norm for every trans person, every day of their life. Anti-trans groups aim to legislate us out of existence, drag us over social media, and spread lies about who we are and what we stand for. They try to ban us from sports based on flawed science and lies.”

Lizard Skin has released these new Earth Tone DSP tapes to add some subtle colour to your ride. These certainly look the business if your riding takes you off-road and down some muddy trails. The earthy tones take Lizard Skin’s colour choices to 15, so they believe there is something for everyone. The Earth Tone DSP comes with all the durability and grippy feel of the other DSP colours and is the tape of choice for WorldTour teams Lotto-Soudal and Movistar. Although, to be fair, I doubt they go for chocolate brown or olive green…

      So many follow up questions:

      So many follow up questions:

“nobody from my community cycles” – you do that’s 1

Drivers shouldn’t see cyclists as the enemy – that’s easy we’re not, infact most of us are drivers. Every cyclist is one less car, we’re actually doing the gammons a favour

Where are these new Cycling highways you mention going to go. NB wrong answer is in the 2m miles of tunnels.

So people are going to learn to cycle on their cheap bikes on cycling specific infra and then be totally happy to use packed congested roads when they realise the cycling specific infra doesn’t go to their chosen destination.

Not me, I don’t video, but I saw it. It was this road. The design was always going to produce accidents like this. The shared path has priority over junction, from road markings, but the cars won’t be able to see to pull out, without creeping. So they don’t bother creeping and drive to where the junction used to be, across the path. I rode it once slowly, won’t use it again. Was safer before with no cycle infra

I take your point, except – what infra? Looks like they just painted bike symbols on the pavement, which is not really infrastructure, more an invitation for motorists to harass cyclists for not using the shared path whilst running down those who do (as you intimated).

Absolutely not. It’s the worst place I’ve ever ridden for it. It makes riding in London a pleasant and safe experience. Normally the echo bashes them for the sake of it. There is a school about 200 yrds away from the accident sight, and the time…

you can stick two brakes on

you can stick two brakes on if you want, it’s drilled for that. But it’s good practice to start kids with a rear brake only – stops them doing the panick-grab and flipping over their handlebars. And as small kids weigh less, they don’t really need two brakes.

I found the biggest challenge with teaching my kids to cycle was not the pedalling bit, but teachign them to brake safely without panicking and flipping over the handlebars.

      p.s. frog bikes are ace.

I’m a proper republican who has no time for hereditary privilege, or the weird brown-nosing in England with regards the Windsors.

But it isn’t it nice to see someone get to nursery on a bike? Now, could we normalise children cycling to nursery and school, by building the infrastructure necessary to make it safe. One of my most heartening cycling moments was visiting Munich, and seeing the masses of bikes locked up outside of the kindergartens.

Well we might not have an unelected head of state in our political systems as I’m sure that was one of the arguments for leaving the EU.

But it would be nice to know the job she does, the wages she gets from the tax payer to do it, an whether it can be done cheaper with a Presidency rather then heriditary system.

If you can define what her practical role actually is, we might be able to start. Many other countries manage without one. We even managed to do without one for a while, but we had to do with an unelected head of state inst…. oh wait….

As it happens I have nothing really against Maj but she’s not got long, and who is going to replace her? Whether she does a “good” job or not is academic, cos no one in the country gets a say. Not even you Nige….

don’t think anyone is claiming the descendent of a head of state can’t be head of state, only that they shouldn’t be head of state just because they are a descendent of a head of state.

However given the performance of the electorate in recent examples, I have difficulty in accepting an elected head of state could be an improvement on the status quo

When I was a kid (in the 70s)

When I was a kid (in the 70s) we use to go up to the West End and just hang out. Don’t actually remember why but I think we were a nusance. Anyway, a number of my friends were hit by black cabs (both as peds and cyclists) no serious injuries or damage.  The Taxi driver always insisted that he take them to A&E – I think it was to ensure no concussion etc.. and obviously to reduce the liability. The question is why the Bus driver didn’t call for an ambulance (why’s that not standard procedure) and wait until they were sure he was alright.

          The original article states

The original article states the witness as saying the cyclist’s sign collided with the bus and broke the sign.

One man said he was on a bus that knocked the biker’s sign off: “I was on the bus yesterday that he crashed into.

“It broke off his sign and he stood in front of our bus near Hull Royal holding up all the traffic.

Now the above does change the incident quite significantly to how Road CC listed it. Whether that is them following the Reporting Code or just badly reported from both sides but as the witness is quite hostile anyway the actual sequence of events will have to be guessed at. Still a road accident needs some details swap.

      Erm – isn’t that just called “overtaking”…?

You’ve ridden a bike, haven’t you? Slow down and pull out? To most drivers, that’s not overtaking!!

If you have the good fortune

If you have the good fortune to own a Nintendo Switch, for a few days more you can download and play for free, Descenders, a downhill race action game.

It seems after a few plays to be nothing on Lonely Mountains Downhill, which is just joyful, but you have to pay for that.

I can say that I will probably not be paying for Descenders.

@mctrials23 I wasn't thinking of identifying poor driving, which is obviously tricky without supplementary evidence, but given the huge amount of incidents that involve excessive speed GPS for keeping people to the speed limit is perfectly valid; even if there were issues with identifying the exact speed at any point, if it can be measured (as you can) that somebody has gone from point A to point B, a mile apart, on a 20 mph road in two minutes instead of three then get the fine and points in the post. Remove excessive speed and you remove the cause of numerous injury and fatality incidents.

@mitsky Its another one of those things that makes no sense isn't it. Someone was saying in another thread that we need a harder driving test. I don't think we do. Everyone who has passed in the last 20 years has done a test that is more than happy to fail you for behaviour that 90% of drivers exhibit every time they get behind the wheel. The test is fine. The fact that getting your license seems to be considered some weird proof that you will continue to drive safely is the issue. The fact that when you prove that you cannot drive safely its not immediately revoked is the issue.

@Rendel Harris The issue with GPS chips, as everyone who has one of those black boxes will attest to, is that they are crap. They interpret heavy braking as poor driving rather than someone else forcing it. They see rapid acceleration where there is none. All we need is a much higher chance of people being caught and punished for their everyday shit driving. I'm sure as a cyclist that every single time you go out on your bike you will have a dozen or more times when you think "that would have been a nasty accident if someone was coming the other direction". Eventually, when bad behaviour suffers no consequences it becomes completely normalised. Then we struggle to treat it as anything but a normal, unavoidable accident when that bad behaviour does incur consequences.

Drivers regularly pull out in front of me and cause me to slam on the brakes or avoid them. Very often they have seen me and just assume I'm not going very fast or they assume I will slow down/stop (which I do). Too many drivers don't look for cyclists, hate giving way to them or expect the cyclist to be moving slowly and just pull out.

@Rendel Harris By the time someone is looking at prison time its too late. As has been proven time and time again, the severity of punishment is a poor deterrent to bad behaviour if people don't think its going to happen to them or they don't think they will be caught. Now I do think that there should be far more severe and immediate punishments for bad driving when drivers are caught but this would need to be coupled with a massive push to actually act on information/proof of bad driving. As anyone that submits footage to the police knows, its a crapshoot and certain police forces are anti-cyclist. This would try to essentially put people off misbehaving whilst driving before they cause an accident rather than getting the tired old excuse of "it was a single dangerous incident, they definitely don't do this all the time and their luck finally ran out". Perhaps it should go even further and if you have a history of speeding and you hurt someone speeding, that is looked upon in a very dim light.

Can we talk about “Washing up liquid contains a lot of salt – not a great idea to use a corrosive substance on a bicycle”? This is an urban myth. I have washed all of our many bikes using Fairy liquid or Ecover for decades. I’ve never found any evidence of corrosion, paint, laquer or decal wear, or any sign of anything. I regularly service forks and bearings, swapping a lot of gear, and everything has always been fine. Here’s far too much info below - long story short, Fairy liquid in 5L of hot water has a borderline-homeopathic amount of salt, it’s fine to use on a bike. ============ The honest answer is that neither Fairy nor Ecover publicly disclose the actual sodium chloride concentration in the consumer products I could find. The safety data sheets list hazardous ingredients above reporting thresholds, but sodium chloride is not reported for either product. However, we can put some realistic bounds on it. Fairy Original The SDS lists: Sodium laureth sulfate: 20-30%
 Lauramine oxide: 5-10%
 Alcohol: 1-5%
No sodium chloride is declared. 15 In detergent formulations, sodium chloride is commonly used as a viscosity modifier (thickener) and is typically present at around 0.5-3%, sometimes lower. The absence of declaration suggests it is either not present or present at a low concentration that does not require reporting. This range is an informed formulation estimate, not a value stated by Fairy. Ecover The Ecover ingredient information lists: Sodium lauryl sulfate
 Lauryl glucoside
 Cocamidopropyl betaine
 Alcohol
 Lactic acid
 Sodium octyl sulphate
Again, no sodium chloride is listed. Ecover's formulations tend to rely more heavily on plant-derived surfactants and may use little or no salt for thickening, but I could not find a published concentration. 63 What does this mean for bike washing? Let's assume a worst-case 3% salt content in Fairy. If you add: 10 mL Fairy to a 5-litre bucket
 Then salt introduced would be approximately: 10 mL × 3% ≈ 0.3 g salt
 Distributed through 5 L water
 ≈ 60 mg/L salt
For comparison: Typical seawater: ~35,000 mg/L
Lightly salted winter road spray: often hundreds to thousands of mg/L
The wash bucket above: ~60 mg/L
So even under a pessimistic assumption, the salt concentration is hundreds to thousands of times lower than the salt exposure your bike gets from winter roads. From a corrosion perspective, the quantity of salt introduced by washing-up liquid is essentially negligible compared with: Riding on salted roads
 Coastal spray
Leaving winter grime on the bike
Therefore my practical conclusion remains: ✅ Fairy or Ecover in a wash bucket is extremely unlikely to contribute any measurable corrosion risk. ✅ The important thing is rinsing and drying afterwards. ✅ Winter road salt is the real enemy, not washing-up liquid.

@perce I'm not sure I agree with that. I think thats just confirming that he is take fully responsibility and recognises that the cyclist could have done nothing to mitigate it.
