Cycling UK welcomes Welsh 20mph speed limit
The move by the Welsh Government demonstrates a continued commitment towards safer streets and more liveable neighbourhoods, which Cycling UK hopes is a bellwether for a wider national shift across the UK.
The Senedd has voted in favour of a default 20mph speed limit on restricted roads, typically residential and built-up areas with high pedestrian activity. New Forest drivers urged to obey speed limit to avoid collisions with cyclists and animals

Police in Hampshire have outlined advice to New Forest visitors driving to the area over the summer, and urged motorists to obey speed limits to avoid collisions with animals or cyclists.
Hampshire Live reports the county’s constabulary has asked drivers to stick to the 40mph speed limit on all New Forest A-roads, while the park’s website says: “Driver complacency has slowly crept back and although animal deaths stay significantly lower than before, the numbers are rising once again as drivers ignore a speed limit that isn’t easy to police throughout the whole of the New Forest.”
Police told drivers to “expect to see animals on or near the road, pass slow and wide only when it is safe, and to stop and wait if needed” and “pass cyclists and walkers slow and wide when it is safe”.

If you’re a long-term reader of road.cc, you’ll know that we don’t exactly go into the minutiae of who is going where during transfer season. But you’ll also know that we keep a keen eye out for where certain riders may be headed when they are finding a new team.
And while he may no longer be the hottest property around, we know that many of you will be interested in where Mark Cavendish ends up next season, and whether he’ll get a crack at that 35th stage win to move him ahead of Eddy Merckx.
Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl boss Patrick Lefevre made it clear earlier this week that Cavendish – winner of the points jersey last year and four stages to draw him level with Merckx, but dropped this year for Fabio Jakobsen – no longer figures in the team’s plans.
And much has been said and written about the British champion’s future since then.
Did we get a glimpse of where that may lie last night? Well, perhaps.
We’ve had a few discussions in the road.cc office in the past fortnight about where he might end up, but most teams we think of has either an overall contender, or a sprinter on its roster for next year.
Bar one, and it was at a party to celebrate that team’s participation in the Tour de France, and its women’s team’s upcoming debut at Le Tour Femmes, that we spotted Cav yesterday evening at an event held by kit supplier Rapha in partnership with Palace Skate.
Few team bosses are as shrewd business-wise as EF Education-EasyPost’s Jonathan Vaughters, and with a stage victory and polka dot shine from Magnus Cort, the US-registered team is having a great Tour.
So, seeing Cavendish yesterday evening at a function hosted by Rapha, the team’s kit supplier, has got our thinking caps a bit overheated, perhaps – though bear in mind that our collective brains at road.cc have been overloading the past couple of weeks about where he might end up.
But think about it. A team that even 12 months from now may not have a top-3 GC contender, but which understands the PR value to sponsors that would come from Cavendish winning just one stage of next year’s race?
Perhaps we’re reading too much into him being present last night at an event hosted by the company that supplies the team’s kit.
But could we also be looking at smoke and correctly finding the seat of the fire?
One thing we do know is that we’d love to see him ride next year’s Tour de France … and to grab that record-breaking 35th stage win.

As I recall it made cycling more popular rather than doing for it...honestly, this article is an absolute dumpster fire of factual errors (Orson Welles did not write 1984 and Warner Bros do not organise MTB races) and grammatical and syntactical mistakes ("TV coverage is also, in no short order, what rings in the lion’s share of sponsorship money" - what?). What on earth happened?
@Sriracha It is indeed ridiculous that one can buy these illegal machines just on a promise that one won't use it on public roads; almost as ludicrous as being able to buy a motor car that can do 230mph with a promise that one won't ever do more than 70mph. By all means let's have a crackdown on illegal electric motorcycles, but there should be simultaneous legislation restricting all cars to 70mph maximum with severe confiscate/crush penalties for any vehicle that has been modified to circumvent the restrictor.
Yes, let's send in the army to go after the group that kills 1750 people a year and seriously injures 25,000 more, 85% of whom admit to breaking the law when it suits them. Shocking that these thugs have been allowed to get away with their illegal behaviours for so long and at such devastating cost to their victims and their families.
@Steve K Yep, at the time I had a back wheel conversion ebike, fully legal kit from a reputable UK supplier, all three of my LBSs refused to do a front brake fluid replacement for me; they were very polite and apologetic but they all had a policy of only working on purpose-built ebikes from well-known manufacturers. One explained that there were plenty of falsely-badged dodgy kits around with 750W motors masquerading as 250W and they didn't want to risk any potential legal issues if they were found to have facilitated getting an illegal machine back on the road.
@leedorney Nowt wrong with inner tubes, but if you'd have spent £100 buying tyres to use them tubeless I bet you'd be at least marginally annoyed.

Much as you cannot outrun a polar bear, but you might be able to outrun the bloke next to you, it's about persuading the scrote that the bike next to yours is easier to steal, though of course not as nice. And mine will always be grubbier. And it helps with the insurance payout. I like my hip lock DX1000, at the time of purchase it was the only lock that would fit around the rim and tyre, securing the rohloff to the frame and secure object. And it definitely looks the part. Yet to see the LPL attack the locking mech, the key, to my untrained eye looks better than my many kryptonites. As the above has it, these diamond sold secure locks are getting cheaper and that is no bad thing.
It's good to see that there are bike shop owners with principles. I was in a bike shop recently when some of the Deliveroo fraternity brought their bikes in. The staff saw that the bikes were illegal and refused to touch them. Fortunately the riders didn't cause any trouble, although this might have been because there were another 4 guys in the repair shop, with a lot of spanners and wrenches in easy reach! Illegal bike are a real problem, whether they're modified e-bikes or electric motorbikes. The Police and councils to occasionally run operations to try and catch them but they won't chase them. In my area they're being used for drug dealing.
Perhaps the friendly approach might work?
I don't believe tall stories about invincible bike locks, period. Even IF it could withstand an angle grinder, what happens if the thief doesn't use a grinder but another means? Say he douses that hard but brittle lock with refrigerant spray and gives it a good whack with a hammer? Or -what happened to me but fortunately with a low value bike- they don't manage to cut the lock and out of spite they attack the frame and cut through it?

North Somerset council is
North Somerset council is considering making the speed limit through Ham Green, Pill, and Easton-in-Gordano 20 mph. Given that it’s not a main road – nobody would go into those villages unless they lived there or had business there, they’d just stay on the main A369 – it would seem to make sense. That being said, and for that reason, any speeding through the villages (and there is a lot) is clearly already being carried out by residents.

Which is quite significant: how many hours of climbing are there in the Tour, forty maybe? Twelve minutes! If the first Twitterer quoted is correct, it really does seem odd that you would choose to be 400g over the UCI limit. Of course it could be argued that discs allow one to descend faster, but I didn’t notice Pog getting dropped on the descents with his rim brakes in previous tours.
