Cycling fans divided over AG2R Citroën's denim bib shorts
A crime against fashion? A crime against cycling? The best thing to come from pro cycling in 2023? An eye-harming denim disaster? The coolest bibs in the peloton? AG2R Citroën, the team fabled for splitting the room with their brown shorts, have done it again…
If you thought the brown bibs were controversial…https://t.co/aira3WivpB

Don’t worry, the brown shorts will be back on Sunday, the team promises. In the meantime the cycling world was left to debate denim…
No the brown bits are awesome but denim, well… denim is in its own class! And don’t worry, the brown bits will be back on Sunday!
— David C B (@tzed250) March 2, 2023
On our story, lesterama suggested the team missed a trick and should have deployed brown denim for maximum piss-boiling effect, or worse, Jem PT added… corduroy… *shudders in French*…
Luke Orr: “I knew it, only taken 30 years for the Carrera ‘denim’ bibs to take off”
Piers Stanbury: “Well they’ve managed to get us all talking… sponsors must be happy…”
The replies section of Katy Madgwick’s tweet about the news was a superb summary of public opinion…
ITS A CRIME. BROWN OR BUST!!!!

Worse than the 💩 shorts

These are horrendous. Where can I buy some??
— Dan (@dfitzgerald90) March 2, 2023
I actually quite like these, a subtle denim version works

Yes! Best thing in cycling 2023

Who wore denim the best?
Good reason to share again one of THE great cycling photos. Anyone asking who wore Denin lycra the best. Here is your answer. Pantani. Alpe d’Huez. pic.twitter.com/cZAf2yniay

POLL: Denim bib shorts — hot or not?
Don’t act surprised, you knew this was coming…
Have Bahrain Victorious solved the mystery of Matej Mohorič's stolen Garmin?
In short. No. From the Garmin 830 box in shot and the fact Matej never uploaded his Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne file to Strava, we’re taking an educated guess this is a new device for the 2022 Milan-San Remo winner…
Anyway, well played…

Jeremy Vine "notorious" for cycling around London
Notorious: /nə(ʊ)ˈtɔːrɪəs/ (adjective) famous or well known, typically for some bad quality or deed…
Now imagine a news story that said “Jeremy Vine has been notorious for driving around London.” pic.twitter.com/5QELHYuwXP

It’s been some week for the BBC and Channel 5 presenter…

Dan Walker hits back at "bitter" Piers Morgan for accusing him of "milking" collision injuries like he had "survived a terror attack"
Piers Morgan attracting criticism with controversial comments? Who’d have thought it? At least he was right about Cristiano Ronaldo, Manchester United and Lionel Messi… oh, wait a second…
This playground spat was, I’m sure Piers would tell the teacher, started by Dan Walker who hosted the Royal Television Society’s awards night on Wednesday and apparently had a dig at the Talk TV ‘personality’ in his speech.
As with any good feud between adult males with a combined age of 102, word got back to Morgan who took to Twitter, saying Walker had been “kicked off Match of the Day and BBC Breakfast”, was “washed up on Channel 5” and had been “milking” his “grazes” from being knocked off his bike by a driver in Sheffield like he had “survived a terror attack” (particularly tasteful when you read the front page of your morning paper today).
🤣🤣If I were Dan Walker, and I’d been kicked off Match of the Day & BBC Breakfast, then washed up on Channel 5 daytime, and only got press these days by falling off a bike, getting a few grazes, and milking it like I’d survived a terror attack, I’d be this bitter too. https://t.co/Be5kPPSOCq
— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) March 2, 2023
In reply, Walker said: “What a laugh. Interesting idea of taking a lesson on bitterness from a fella who has written article after article attacking a woman who had one drink with him & thought he was a numptie. We missed you last night. You should have come.”
At least we didn’t get to hear Morgan’s, I’m sure esteemed, contribution to the helmet debate…(“Siri, remind me to pitch ‘Piers Morgan: talking helmets’ to Talk TV”)…
> Why is Dan Walker’s claim that a bike helmet saved his life so controversial?
Fancy winning a £300 POC helmet?
Our friends at off road.cc have a survey up where you can win a POC helmet worth £300 for telling Rider Research Hub your thoughts on all things electric mountain bikes (if you have any)…

Admittedly if you’re a roadie the lid pictured might not be the POC model you have in mind — that’s not going to protect you from the sharp tongue of your group ride companions… anyway, have a go, if you want, you might just win something…

No photo finish required there…
The sad news we've all been waiting for (+ is Matej Mohorič dusting off the dropper post?)
A moment of silence for Matej’s Garmin, gone forever. One 80km breakaway and a third-placed finish at Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne never to see the light of Strava…
Nope, gone forever 🤣 https://t.co/OuhtIlR9UB
— Matej Mohoric (@matmohoric) March 3, 2023
On the plus side, as some eagle-eyed commenters have suggested… is that the dropper post back? The Slovenian is at Strade Bianche tomorrow and then Tirreno-Adriatico next week, but after those small commitments are out the way… it’s San Remo time…
Do I see a dropper post…?

Matej Mohorič spotted using dropper post during Strade Bianche recon
Here’s a bit more on that video doing the rounds of Matej Mohorič ahead of his pre-Strade Bianche ride sporting a dropper post on his Merida…
🤔 @matmohoric’s Garmin is back?#RideAsOne pic.twitter.com/SYn4xvlb6F
— Team Bahrain Victorious (@BHRVictorious) March 3, 2023
It’s hardly top secret info, to be fair, Bahrain Victorious posted it on their social media and then another video around an hour ago of the riders on the gravel, Mohorič appearing to be riding the same bike (front right rider) with the remote on his right drop.
😍 These gravel roads… @StradeBianche#RideAsOne pic.twitter.com/xkWuDlD7Oq
— Team Bahrain Victorious (@BHRVictorious) March 3, 2023
The Slovenian used the post to incredible effect at Milan-San Remo last year, as well as during the Tour de France, but are we about to see it on the Tuscan gravel? It certainly looks that way…
Dropper post back as well? 👀
— Ventagli (@ventolaterale) March 3, 2023
I see dropper post👀
Another heart attack incoming 😅— Janch (@janatvita) March 3, 2023
“It helped me to lower the centre of gravity to handle the bike, but still to remain seated on the saddle. I was looking forward to the race and experiencing the features in the race,” Mohorič told road.cc about the tech after last year’s big San Remo success.
“In training it seems to me that it made a huge impact, and then in the race it really confirmed it.

“Especially on the safety… I felt completely comfortable and in control [with a dropper post] whereas the other years I remember maybe going a little bit slower and I felt like I was on the limit.
“With a dropper post it gives you significantly more control of the bike. You just feel more relaxed and you can actually brake harder because you can get the weight down more effectively.”

@aidanR You've never ridden a Kingcycle with body sock or a Lightning F-40 then? https://www.lightningbikes.com/f40/index.html If you'll admit "cycle" as opposed to "bike" you can definitely be "in the bike" (velomobile).
Pretty much nowhere /couldn't/ have provision for off-road parking, we just haven't prioritised it. It might involve people having to walk a little way to access their vehicle, which current car-oriented society finds it impossible to get it's collective head around.
Some years back a driver in Gloucestershire managed to open their door in front of a bus and got it ripped off, if they couldn't see a bus nothing else stands much chance. I have asked the safety group if they are aware of the law, or just trying to mislead drivers into thinking it isn't their resif they injure anyone.
To be fair, actors on TV shows hardly ever cycle or take part in any physical activity other than fighting or sexual intercourse. It always seems odd when soap characters, who have never shown any interest in sport, suddenly start having a kick around when the world cup is on
I think the suggestion is that everyone should look before they leap 🙈, it's not absolutely necessary to go dutch.

My main issue with only mentioning cyclists (rather than doing both at once) is the drivers who will argue its the riders fault (despite the law meaning they are liable regardless of best practice for riders) And the reality that you can't always allow 1m clearance. (1m clearance, both sides + width of bike = 2.6m minimum; Given margins of error, probably closer to 2.7-3m. And arguably should allow for a cargo bike that could be 1.5m wide.) Unless we start saying obstruction by illegal parking happens if there is less than 3.5m clear space, probably more it isn't always possible to allow 1m clearance from parked car doors. (Plenty of residential areas have tighter parking than this). We would also need to start prosecuting a good chunk of overtakes near parked cars to allow space to manouvre...
Unfortunately many drivers will just drive at you or force an overtake pushing you closer to parked cars. Much like the cyclists paradox of simultaneously riding like a speed crazed demon and being too slow, tgere is the paradox of riding too close to parked cars or the edge of the road and not being far enough over.
That example illustrated by the police (ie. 1.5m from centre of bike) is, & always has been, wrong. 🤬 The 0.75m from the car to centre of bike shown in the link is stupid, 0.75m from the kerb is also nonsense. The bike & rider are probably somewhere between 0.5 & 0.7m wide.

Ag2R have always had the best
Ag2R have always had the best kit in the peleton. From the waist up.
And the worst from the waist down.

It’s a shame they didn’t
It’s a shame they didn’t really lean into it and go for the full double denim look.
I have never liked the brown shorts, I think these are OK, would always wear black myself.

Im less bothered by the look,
Im less bothered by the look, than the fact theyre made out of denim, and I appreciate cowboys used to wear them in saddles too, but cycling is going to make things alot more bio hazard unfriendly after a few hours racing a bicycle

Talking of bio hazards… used to have what were called Touring shorts about 20 years ago. They had a cycling pad, and they were cotton or some similar material, with a reasonable pocket on each leg. Very practical, very comfy.
Until I got a pilonidal sinus, partly because of the big seam straight up the middle of the back of them. Never wore them again…

On the JV thing:
There was a thread on Reddit a couple of days ago where someone posted a video from Jeremey. It wasn’t even a car/driving sub. A short summary of the clip:
Now what do we think the thread was called? “Van driver nearly hits cylist and pedestrian”? Of course not, it was: “Cyclist endangers pedestrian by distracting van driver”.
I’m no JV fan, but it’s insane how eager many are to excuse any level of dangerous driving and perform inhuman feats of mental gymnastics to shit on cyclists.
He posted it on twitter, so
He posted it on twitter, so just search his timeline if you want to watch it, I thought it was alot less marginal than the bus setup, driver totally at fault, and JVs brakes clearly work 😉
but still a couple of interesting points it raised I thought.
Like if I’m at a junction and I know I’ve got a less experienced rider directly behind me, do I ride this differently to provide better protection to them,am i responsible as lead out rider not to create problems for them or treat it like theyre adult enough to cope with whatever happens next just deal with it?
I saw that video; JV could
I saw that video; JV could have used the cycle lane to let the van driver get past but no, JV had to move over on the van because he wants content for his tweets and it was JV that started the verbal confrontation with the van driver, who wound down his window to reply.
With so many teams this year
With so many teams this year of all years having kit which looks the same and making them harder to spot in a bunch.. it’s pleasing to know that AG2R are once again doing things their own way.
Denim bibs… probably looks better on Benoît Cosnefroy than it would me.. but I’m down with it.

Has anyone noticed that he really does seem to be able to spot approaching hazards, having experienced them seemingly often, and have an uncanny ability to slowdown and come to a relatively gentle stop and so avoid being hit by an incompetent and impatient motorist?
