Donald Trump has cancelled grants for active travel projects such as pedestrian trails and bike lanes across the United States, the President claiming cycling and walking infrastructure is “hostile to motor vehicles”.
The US Department of Transportation has rescinded backing for numerous cycle lane projects and pedestrian paths in various locations around the country, Bloomberg reporting the department’s explanation for the cancellations.
In San Diego County a $1.2m grant for a road improvement project including bike lanes has been cancelled, the department claiming that such cycling infrastructure “appears to reduce lane capacity and a road diet that is hostile to motor vehicles”.
The word “hostile” was also used regarding a scheme in Alabama which was to convert street lanes into trail space. The department said the proposals were “counter to its priority of preserving or increasing roadway capacity for motor vehicles”.
In Boston, the DoT said a grant to improve safety at a city junction would “impede vehicle capacity and speed”, while a separate project to boost walking and cycling was called out for changing the “current auto-centric configuration”.
Bloomberg reporter Ted Mann said the wave of recent cancellations showed “just how determined the administration is to promote the use of single-occupancy vehicles in cities and towns – and to thwart local governments’ attempts to develop other ways for residents to get around.”
A spokesperson for Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said they are “reviewing our options” following the cancellation of their grants. They explained how the grants were not just for cycling infrastructure, but would also have funded the replacement of pavements, improved lighting, bus stop upgrades, and the planting of trees on neighbourhood streets.
Trump’s opposition to cycling projects is nothing new, the President having set his sights on New York City’s bike lanes earlier this year.
Post-election Trump claimed “no one’s coming to the city” because of “horrible” congestion pricing that is “destructive to New York”, as well as cycling infrastructure which Trump called “so bad”.
“They should get rid of the bike lanes and the sidewalks in the middle of the street,” he said. “They’re so bad. They’re dangerous. These [electric] bikes go at 20 miles an hour. They’re whacking people.”
“I think it’s really horrible, but I want to discuss it [scrapping the congestion charge] at this point,” he continued. “If I decide to do it, I will be able to kill it off in Washington through the Department of Transportation. It’s a lot of power. Traffic is way down because people can’t come into Manhattan and it’s only going to get worse. People don’t know about it until they get the bill.”

Fit people that can think are
Fit people that can think are an anathema to the American government.
Fit people are less likely to need their expensive medical insurance and harder to keep in medical financial poverty.
People who can think … well, they are unlikely to be supporting the regime anyway.
Things are getting a bit like
Things are getting a bit like that in the UK. Growth and stoking the economy are the number one priority.
Good citizens don’t waste time and energy indulging in physical activity (often requiring open spaces and facilities which could be sold off for development). They buy consumer goods and regularly use retail park and town centre eateries.
Ask a model citizen if he takes part in sport, he will reply :
“Absolutely! I’ve got all sky sports channels.” Or,
“Yes! I’ve just renewed my season ticket at xxxxx (insert appropriate PL club).
I admire Trump’s energy and

If he isn’t busy ending wars, he is optimising transport and offering state of the art medical advice. I took his advice and injected Domestos during COVID. It worked. I have never caught the virus. However, I am awaiting a multiple organ transplant.
He led a brilliant initiative to annexe Greenland by stealth and friendly diplomacy, which looked like working until the locals told JD Vance’s wife to fuck off.
He will go down in history as the greatest president ever mainly by threatening text book publishers with lawsuits.

If the funds were due to come
If the funds were due to come from the central government, the state could try to fund the bike lanes themselves.
Would be interesting to see if these states then say
“Why are we sending our tax dollars to WDC when we don’t get anything back ie to help with infrastructure?”
The blue states subsidise the red ones (argh socialism!) so, as Newsom has threatened via California, it would also be interesting to see if he carries out his threat to withhold his state’s taxes…

As an autistic person, it’s also refreshing to see the Administration’s tireless and scientific approach to research has found a connection between autism & women taking paracetamol. I can rest easy knowing that it’s my mum’s “fault” apparently.
And having found such a well hidden link, it can only be a matter of hours before they make a connection between high levels of gun ownership, and high levels of mass shootings. Hurrah!

Well clearly the problem is that the high levels of gun ownership are by the wrong people. If only all the *good* people had guns! Then they’d be able to combat the waves of illegal criminal terrorist migrant gangs and extreme left terrorists. And protect civil discourse by defending the accommodating, pacific Christian way of life from all those inferior, inherently repressive other religions. (Which frankly were founded in violent conquest but that we of course respect for some reason – is this right? )
Yes, there’d be less violence if guns were more freely available to good (God?) people *.
* As long noted – the mere number of weapons in private hands isn’t the whole of it. America’s northern neighbour has a LOT of guns – and much less gun violence. And the Swiss are armed to the teeth, by law! OTOH there are more (or at least significantly different) restrictions there among many other differences.
Apparently there will be
Apparently there will be hastily arranged press conference later today to confirm that mass shootings can be ended, if only citizens would no longer drink domestic beer (“free” or otherwise).
Molson & Feldschlösschen are far safer options. The tariffs though….. they really haven’t thought it through.
It’s just like “free speech”
It’s just like “free speech” – we no longer have it because we gave it to the wrong people eg. the likes of

The leader of a country is representative of their most AVERAGE citizens by this measure America needs to sit at the toddler table again… Trump has proven he’s repeatedly lacking in intelligence and judgement.
Hitler didn’t like cyclists
Hitler didn’t like cyclists on main roads either. He thought they made Germany look poor, whereas cars made it look prosperous. Apparently he also resented being made a cycle messenger in WW1 instead of a motorcycle dispatch rider. Woonder if Trump has a reason for not liking cyclists or cycling. Two ranting loons.
