Lance has been riding some pretty idiosyncratic-looking bikes this year. Shepard Fairey, Futura, Yoshimoto Nara and Marc Newson have all chipped in with designs but come the final day in Paris it looks like everyone’s favourite Texan will be taking to the streets on a Madone personalised by none other than Damien Hirst.

Given Hirst’s penchant for severed animals, skulls and death it’s perhaps a bit surprising that Britain’s best-known modern artist has gone for a design consisting of… pretty butterflies. The frame and deep-section Bontrager rims are covered with colourful wing patterns: let’s hope that Lance has a natty outfit to match the bike. Yellow would clash a bit.

Hirst has donated the design to the Livestrong Stages project, a global art exhibition raising funds for, and awareness of, the fight against cancer. The Exhxbition opens at Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin in Paris before moving to the states in the Autumn.

Incidentally we all know that Hirst only does the concept (darling) and it’s up to an ‘assistant’ to actually knock the stuff out. In this case the assistant is a friend of a friend – in the real sense, not the urban legend sense – who’s based in Bristol.
