A football fan’s latest charity cycle was brought to an abrupt halt this week when his bike was stolen outside a Northampton Starbucks, leaving him “heartbroken” and “devastated”.

Luton Town supporter Mark Crowther was taking part in the latest leg of his Every Mind Matters fundraising campaign, which sees him cycle to all of the club’s away league and cup fixtures this season, in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society, the Ollie Foundation, the Bedford MS Therapy Centre, and Mind BLMK.

The 60-year-old has completed the season-long challenge twice before, during Luton’s Championship and Premier League campaigns in 2021/22 and 2023/24 respectively, raising over £50,000.

After setting off from the team’s Kenilworth Road home on Monday, Crowther was planning to ride 70 miles to Leicester, before cycling another 100 miles the following day to Huddersfield, in time for Tuesday night’s match.

However, while riding through Northampton, 41 miles into his trip, he stopped at a Starbucks, leaving his Trek Domane outside. However, when he returned, the bike – which he had just bought this year – was gone, forcing him to return home.

“So today started full of optimism for day one cycle to Leicester en route to Huddersfield Town for Every Mind Matters Challenge 10, but I’m home feeling really upset, gutted, angry,” Crowthers posted on Facebook following the theft.

“While I’m determined to complete my cycle to Huddersfield, I am not in the right frame of mind to complete this tomorrow. Sorry, I hope you all understand.

“Thank you so much for all your support and the kind generous donations it means so much to me and all the charities.”

Speaking on BBC Three Counties Radio yesterday, Crowther said he was “absolutely gutted” losing his “pride and joy”.

“I left the bike for about a minute, went to the toilet, and when I came back it was stolen,” he said.

“It’s heartbreaking. I do this to follow my passion and go and see Luton away, and to raise awareness for mental health. It’s awful.”

He also told Luton Today: “It was against the window, so I literally came out, and the first thought was, ‘Oh, maybe someone’s moved it because it was in the way.’

“So I walked around Starbucks, couldn’t see it, and then I realised it had been taken.

“The planning and preparation had gone into the two days’ cycle, taking time off work, finding accommodation. It’s just the fact that I couldn’t complete the challenge, just a disappointment.”

Referring to the Trek, Crowther continued: “It’s very specific, the colours of it. So I got it specifically for the orange. And a lot of work in terms of bike fitting so that I’m aligned to the bike.

“If I don’t hear anything within the next week, the chances are I won’t see that bike again, which is very upsetting.”

Despite losing his bike, the 60-year-old insists he will carry on with his challenge, and aims to borrow a bike ahead of Luton’s next away fixture at Burton Albion.

“If I can borrow a bike, I’ll cycle next weekend, but other than that, the next away cycle is Burton, which is at the end of the month,” he said.

Following the theft, Crowther has received an outpouring of sympathy from cyclists and his fellow football fans, while Luton Town also posted a message of support for the 60-year-old.

“Mark, we’re incredibly proud of you and we’re all right behind you! We’ll make sure you get to Huddersfield, and those missed miles will be made up as you continue your amazing challenge,” the club said in a statement.

“Mark is an absolute inspiration who puts himself out and rides miles and MILES, raising funds and the profile of mental health,” Andrew Kingston added on Facebook. “If anyone does have any information about the bike, Mark, I’m sure, would love to be reunited with it.”

Crowther says he has been “blown away” by the support he’s received, adding that “everyone has been so kind”.

“The goodwill, the messages of support from everyone at the football club, from the community, has been unbelievable,” he said.

In a statement, Northamptonshire Police said it had received a report of a bike theft shortly before 14:30pm on Monday. It has appealed for anyone with information to get in touch.
