    Increasing maximum sentences

Increasing maximum sentences is just a way for a government to look Tough On Crime™ without spending any money.

The proposed new offence of causing serious injury by careless driving is interesting though.

How much faster is say a 2-3 grand road bike than a halfords road bike?

Difficult to say, I’d guess maybe 20% quicker as a ball park figure.

If you can borrow or hire a more expensive bike and a power meter you could measure the difference to get a better idea. Like this – https://road.cc/content/blog/175749-buying-watts-how-much-difference-does-aero-bike-make

I have a bell, rarely need it though. On country lanes almost all the pedestrians I see walk facing traffic, so they do see me coming. Tend to use the bell more on shared paths. Usually it’s best to ring the bell from a long way back, if you’re too close then they don’t have enough time to react. I also like to have both hands covering the brakes if I’m close to pedestrians.

I’ve ordered a bear bell, it’s designed for hikers who don’t want to surprise the wildlife. Not sure how well it will work on a bike, but it was only £4.

    Pre-lockdown I was spending

Pre-lockdown I was spending £3000 per year on a season ticket for the train, so working from home is a bonus from that point of view.

You can also get a small amount of tax relief for working from home – https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-52982988

On the employer side of things, our London employees are moving to a smaller office soon with the intention that most of them will continue to work from home 2 or 3 days per week. I expect my office will also move when the lease is up. They’re probably saving a small fortune on biscuits too.

I’ve cycled at Goodwood, there’s an annual British Heart Foundation event there. Probably not as exciting as Spa, but there’s a live airfield inside the track which can be quite interesting.

There have been events at Silverstone in the past, although I haven’t made it there yet.

Are comments disabled for some news stories? I find I am inexplicably unable to post comments on one article. My guess is they were disabled in an attempt to get people to post on more significant articles. I suppose I could simply make a forum post about it but in this case what I had to say wasn’t important. Actually if truth be told I can’t be arsed to.

Also my Firefox spellchecker doesn’t work on this site but it does on others. Anyone else noticed this?

Not sure about comments being disabled, could be for legal reasons if the article was about a court case.

Spellchecking is disabled, not sure why. I don’t know if there’s some (easy) way to override that.

    Why drivers hate cyclists:

    Why drivers hate cyclists:

    a) Drivers hate anything that’s in front of them that’s moving slower than they are.

This is the main reason drivers hate cyclists, they hate being inconvenienced however trivially. Drivers hate caravans and tractors for the same reason, and also “Sunday Drivers” and Learners.

    b) Cyclists are perceived as smug and self-righteous.

Cycling is the transport equivalent of being Vegan. Thinking you’re better than other people just because you’re not killing the planet every time you go to work or pop to the shops.

    c) Drivers pay for the roads and should have sole use of them.

This is a bit of a strange one given that roads are mostly paid for by Income Tax, Council Tax and VAT. Maybe this could be cleared up with an advert on the side of a bus.

If I can pad the above points out to a semi-coherent 15 minute rant do you think they’ll let me on the radio?

If money is no object I’d go

If money is no object I’d go with the Cycliq. Think you’d be looking at about £400 to get front and rear coverage, which is more than I’m prepared to pay.

On my road bike I’ve got 2 Polaroid Cube cameras (£35 each) powered from a USB powerbank. Bit of a faff to use – plug each one into the powerbank, power each one on, start each one. Then reverse that at the end of the ride.

For my commuting bike I’ve got a motorbike dashcam (Blueskysea, £107). It took a bit of work to mount it – drilled holes in an old GoPro adapter for the front camera and the rear camera is screwed to a small block of wood. It’s a lot simpler to use though, I just plug in the power and it starts recording and it stops when I unplug it. Also, the front and rear videos are in sync which saves a bit of hassle when editing.

If I’m out in the countryside I’ll do the head nod thing. In town there are too many cyclists, I’d give myself whiplash.
