Near Miss of the Day 665: "Probably the closest I've come to being wiped out for a while”

Our regular series featuring close passes from around the country - today it's Leicestershire...

“It’s probably the closest I've come to being wiped out for a while,” says the cyclist who filmed this incident of a driver overtaking him at a pinch point then immediately turning left across the path.

Kieron, the road.cc reader who filmed this one, said: “I was commuting to work on a fairly quiet road near my house, in Leicestershire, when I became aware of a car overtaking me on the right, as I approached a pinch point and a mini roundabout.

Blue Citeron.avi from Kieron Barrs on Vimeo.

“I prepared myself to let the car in before the pinch, but what I hadn't prepared for was the immediate left turn.

“It’s probably the closest I've come to being wiped out for a while.”

He added: “Sadly, I didn't get a registration plate.”

Kieron also made a good point, and an important one at this time of year when the daylight hours are decreasing.

He said: “It also made my aware that my camera isn't the best in low light – happy for recommendations!”

Well, we have our regularly updated Buyers Guide here, and earlier this year we also looked at the pros and cons of budget devices here – if any readers have their own views, feel free to let us know in the comments below.

> Near Miss of the Day turns 100 - Why do we do the feature and what have we learnt from it?

Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.

If you’ve caught on camera a close encounter of the uncomfortable kind with another road user that you’d like to share with the wider cycling community please send it to us at info [at] road.cc or send us a message via the road.cc Facebook page.

If the video is on YouTube, please send us a link, if not we can add any footage you supply to our YouTube channel as an unlisted video (so it won't show up on searches).

Please also let us know whether you contacted the police and if so what their reaction was, as well as the reaction of the vehicle operator if it was a bus, lorry or van with company markings etc.

> What to do if you capture a near miss or close pass (or worse) on camera while cycling

Simon joined road.cc as news editor in 2009 and is now the site’s community editor, acting as a link between the team producing the content and our readers. A law and languages graduate, published translator and former retail analyst, he has reported on issues as diverse as cycling-related court cases, anti-doping investigations, the latest developments in the bike industry and the sport’s biggest races. Now back in London full-time after 15 years living in Oxford and Cambridge, he loves cycling along the Thames but misses having his former riding buddy, Elodie the miniature schnauzer, in the basket in front of him.

Question: With a bit of clever computer programming, it should be possible to extract the registration from the video. Does anyone know if such software exists? (I would assume police forces use such software all the time?)

Sure, that software is available here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Vxq9yj2pVWk

Nasty.

My take on teh number plate is starts with an A, possibly L or J, something, 3(?), something, maybe an AD at the end?

Anyone else got any takes?

Blue citroen with white roof, partial plate. If local, rozzers should be able to find some likelies. If they can put their tea down long enough to tap it into the key board that is...

Happened yesterday morning, so I might swing by that road tonight to see if I can spot it.
I commute same time most days and I suspect our paths will cross once more!

Won't do you any good (although I admit I am writing with the jaundiced view of someone who is lumbered with the bone idle or bent Lancashire Constabulary) because the police will say (if they respond at all, which LC wouldn't) that they can't identify the registration on the incident video.

If that Vimeo image has been compressed, I'd have a go at cleaning up the original, if thats the original then its probably a lost cause.  If you're interested drop me a note at hastier_islets.0p AT icloud.com

I did have success by riding past the next week to get the mis-remembered plate of a guy who drove out of where he was working and decided that having to wait for a cyclist to turn right was more than his ego was prepared to bear and therefore required some very heavy handed blocking and swerving until another car came up behind.

WM Police wrote a nasty letter on my say so.
