My word people like the idea of free Vulpine Schwag, over 1200 of you commented in to tell us your favourite cycling season, all bases were covered but early indications are that summer was the winner. And the winner of the Vulpine Harrington Rain Jacket, Cotton Rain Trousers, Long Sleeve Merino Alpine, and Short Sleeve Polo? Well that's…
jimbocrimbo
Who despite what his name might suggest likes cycling in the early autumn best.
Congrats to the winner, who will be getting his fancy clobber soon (well before Chrimbo) and commiserations to the 1,276 of you who lost out. Fret not though we'll have another chance to win some top quality cycling schwag coming your way… Soon.
In the meantime you can console yourself by popping over to Vulpine to think about what might have been season?

Winter.
A northern wind howls down the hills, stopping you in your tracks and freezing your nose drips to your stubble. The roads, covered in ice, invisible shards of flint and oily mud threaten your premature end on every corner. Your fingers, so numb you can’t pull on your brake levers, somehow still have more feeling than your toes. And your face.
20 miles from home you get a puncture. With your useless stumps at the end of your arms, it takes you half an hour to change your tube. You set off in twilight, snow dusting your helmet. Your chain snaps. You cry, and your tears become icicles. You will not get home.

Not so much a season as
Not so much a season as months – Feb/March. It’s when the snow usually hits, you’re coming out of the winter training, but spring hasn’t quite come in yet. Roads are eerily silent, with just the hum of wheels, and the atmosphere is electric with anticipation. Every person has the same look on their face, and there are simply silent recognitions of why you are out on the road. It’s like the first cup of coffee and breakfast at dawn on a big ride day.

Autumn is the fairest cycling
Autumn is the fairest cycling season. It’s still bright and sunny, but the crispness in the morning hints that I need to make use of this fleeting time before the snows hit. Leaves rustle nicely under the wheels and it’s cold enough to break out the thermos of rum-laced hot chocolate.

A mid-summer’s evening ride
A mid-summer’s evening ride after work, when the wind has dropped and the sun is low in the sky. A few like-minded individuals out on their bikes but no cars commuting. Catching a sunset on the return leg you hear the birds going to bed and realise there’s nowhere else you’d rather be at that moment, than in the English countryside in summer.

With me it has to be spring,
With me it has to be spring, the worst of the cold wet days are gone and the days are pulling out while warming up. But they are not so hot you need to plan routes round bottle filling stops or carry spares in your jersey pockets. The spring classics kick of and inspire me to go further and ride for longer helping me shed a little more weight gain fitness and rather than the grimmis of winter riding the smile steadily spreads across my face. The views turn from frozen brown to green with new life forming across the country side. I know that its not long until the Giro which means La Tour is on its way.
Yes spring really is the best time to ride.

Wrapped up with not a square inch of skin showing. Cold, crisp, clear mornings, rime on the grass beside the road and the low winter sun at your back. The shared sense of achievement with your clubmates of having braved the freezing weather. Knowing that while you may not have covered the most miles that morning, the miles you’ve done have been for the love of the ride, not of the temperature.

I’d happy cycle down the lane,

And a plethora of juice,
I love this muggy season,
Of this one I can effuse,
The autumn colours draw me,
The confetti leaf strewn floor,
A dappled sunlight canopy,
And winter at the door,
Those icing sugar mornings,
All sparkling white with frost,
Though I avoid the heavy snow,
At every flippin’ cost,
There’s a reason for each season,

All mixed up with the opportunity to see the summer colours transition into autumn on those crisp cold mornings before everyone else is awake – perfect!

My favourite season is winter.
Last winter was my first season of road cycling.
I sold my little used all mountain full suspension MTB.
Living in the midlands it was a bit pointless.
So I got a road bike.
Going out in the cold, the dark, the mist and frost all I prayed for was the heat and the sunshine.
Not to mention rain…
Summer quickly arrived.
Was it all I hoped for? Yes.
Well… It was hot. And I HATED it.
Dry was good. Not cleaning the bike every ride was great.
But the heat?
Draining, fatiguing, sweating vileness.
I couldn’t wait for the cool and the damp.
Getting wrapped up, feeling the cold bite against your face?
My idea of heaven!

This time last year, I got a single speed to save money on the commute. I was lucky enough to make a friend who showed me that riding through London is not that dangerous. In a month time I was introduced to Strava, sportives, legs shaving, riding in all conditions and all possible distances with a smile on my face and a great sense of accomplishment, got a race bike and then another race bike and then yet another one, reading all the sport science I could read, joined a sport and exercise MSc, being one of the fastest amateurs out there just because I love every meter of pedalling . I wish I could win this bundle for my friend Ryan, a man so humble and so helpful whom I never get the chance to thank enough. Ryan, sorry I decided to ride on tubulars and thank you for coming and picking me up whenever I get a flat because I am too snob to carry a tyre. My favourite season is obviously the start of autumn.

Winter; nothing better than
Winter; nothing better than gearing up all warm and smashing the miles. The air is crisp and your nostrils freeze with every breath in. You make the most of every minute of daylight, and when the sun goes down you’re left in the cold, dark air with nothing to focus on but the illuminated spot of road from your lights. It makes you crave for lighter and warmer days. And when they finally come round, it’s those deep winter, sub zero days that retain the contrast and make every ride even more special.

It has to be Spring.
You have just spent the winter grinding your way through horizontal rain into a seemingly never ending headwind. You have endured the look of distain from every dog-walker you pass. Your right legs have been soaked by passing cars with steamed up windows for no less than 5 months. The skinny greyhounds you call your heros grit their teeth and demonstrate just how tough it is to be a pro by giving it their all up a greasy wall of cobbles in Belgium. You wonder (from the comfort of your warm living room, naturally) how they do it. Then all of a sudden comes that one Sunday we all long for. Your diary is clear. The weather forecast shows nothing but a beautiful little yellow ball. The wind can’t be bothered to come out to play. And somehow by some god-given miracle the stars have aligned….the mrs is away all weekend, the local bike shop has a Saturday clearance and your cycling mates all have the green card for a Sunday ride….. Bliss.

Late spring for me. I continue to cycle throughout winter so I am not stiff come spring. But I think it is the best. The evenings are starting to lengthen and the mornings brighter this leads to better visibility, while my lights are adequate they are no match to that burning orb we call the sun. I’m back in my shorts and short sleeved tops again; I dislike having to cycle in long trousers, but for me 5 is my short-point line, above that I am comfortable in shorts, below that I need something more substantial.

Spring is always colder than you expect it to be. A cracking Autumn day isn’t as cold as you expect it will be but it has heavenly colours and smells. Smell is a greatly under-rated sense when riding and at this time of the year is almost as life affirming, in itself, as the joy of rolling along under your own power on a bike.
