It’s been a while coming, but today Argon 18 has chosen its home race, the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec, to unleash its brand new Nitrogen Disc, the disc brake version of the Canadian company’s aero bike that was first introduced in 2014.
The Nitrogen Disc has been developed from the ground up, the company hasn’t just added disc brakes to the regular Nitrogen, at least that is what they are telling us.
“This new Nitrogen Disc is way more than a Nitrogen with disc brakes. Sure, it does offer great braking power and modulation, but it’s the increased torsional rigidity that really makes it shine especially in out of the corner accelerations. Its internal cable routing, ease of maintenance, adaptability to different riding styles along with its great ergonomic adjustability are other key elements that make the Nitrogen Disc an exceptional modern race bike,” explains Martin Faubert, Head of R&D, Argon 18.
In other words, the company has designed the new frame and fork to take full advantage of the disc brakes, in pursuit of the desired stiffness and weight targets with no weight penalty.
Want some numbers? It’s telling us there’s a massive 80% increase in lateral stiffness with the new fork compared to the previous version, with no impact on comfort.
You’re getting a full carbon fibre frame and fork with the now standard 12mm thru-axles and flat mount interface for the brake callipers, and all hoses are internally routed to reduce drag as much as possible.
There’s increased tyre clearance, a common benefit of disc brakes, with the bike accepting up to 28-30mm tyres.
Argon 18’s clever 3D System remains, providing three head tube heights for every frame size which the company says preserves front-end stiffness and rigidity compared to the more conventional stack of spacers.

I bought the silver/grey Argon 18 Nitrogen disc with Di2 recently. You never see them anywhere around London. I switched from a Cervelo S2 and will be using it for sociable semi-serious rides with mates and more seriously for 90km half ironman's. I love it. Handling on the flat feels responsive and much better on descents, it's generally easier to ride and to me isnt uncomfortable at all (mind you i'm used to an aggressive road bike) and it is just FAST. On my S2 I coasted on the flat at 28kph whereas on this I'm regularly hitting 33-34kph without much gas and 37-40kph whjen I put my foot down. It purrs along like a porsche. I like the colour..it's not flash with electric colours everywhere but its very cool and I've had a ton of people look at it and ask me about it whereas no-one did that with my S2. It's also great with aero extensions, extremely comfortable so I feel I really have the best of 2 worlds..a fun aero road bike and a triathlon bike. I did 225km over 2 days recently and it was brilliant.
It is all so very subjective and others may prefer a more colorful bike, but I think it is an absolutely beautiful color.
The Denmark national team had Argon18 track bikes at the last olympics- in shiny red with white lettering- that looked very smart.

This one looks great in the 'Gulf Porsche' colours, they must do custom colours.

Not a fan of the silver/grey colour on this bike. Doesn't really stand out as much as the regular black/white/red colourways that you usually see from Argon 18. I love the blue option for the E-117 Tri bike (but I'd still probably buy the black and red).
I have the standard Nitrogen, its an absolutely brilliant bike. Not only fast but surprisingly comfortable and great handling and has been oddly overlooked by the media despite being an early adopter of the 'aero' road bike concept.
Good that they've widened the cutaway, which on mine is very snug with 25mm on.
