Boris Bike turns up in the Gambia - almost 4,500 km from London

Oxfam worker spots London hire bike in west Africa - TfL says it may have been donated to charity

Boris Bikes are starting to turn up in the most unusual places – and we don’t mean the wildernesses of southeast or north London not currently served by the Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme.

Following Monday’s video of one being ridden up Mont Ventoux and returned to a docking station in London within 24 hours of it being picked up, today another has turned up in the Gambia.

The picture of the bike was posted to Twitter by Oxfam campaigns and policy director, Ben Phillips.

As yet, it’s unclear how the bike ended up nearly 4,500 kilometres from the British capital, though Transport for London is prepared to give the benefit of the doubt to whomever took it out there.

A spokesman, quoted in the London Evening Standard, said: "We have previously given a number of bikes to charities in Africa. We are still trying to work out where this particular one came from."

Twitter user Chris Tierney quipped, "That's a hell of a commute, but with property prices these days..."

Perhaps it was an early version being tested to make sure it would cope with the roads in London...

Did no-one think to ask the old chap how he acquired it - now that would be an interesting story 1
