I’ll be watching this with interest. Been looking for a suitable shoe for ages for use with flat pedals, so grippy, stiff sole and road styled. Am using Adidas Terrex at the moment but they are not very stiff.

Just checking –  you do know

Just checking –  you do know that the seat post on the Propel can have a set back of  25mm or 5mm before you go changing bikes? I couldn’t get comfy on mine until I read the manual and realised that you could flip the seat clamp to get the seat further forward.

I know you said a a crash hat

I know you said a a crash hat mounted light, but consider the Cateye Rapid Mini and the seat rail mount. With a bit of fiddling it can be made to fit nicely right up under the saddle and so is quite high, and it’s nice and bright.

Motorists pay more tax than is spent on motoring infrastructure. https://www.racfoundation.org/data/road-user-taxation-highways-spending-data-chart The data in the link show that VED and fuel duty are about 3x that spent on roads (2017/18 – £33bn vs £11bn). If you take into account other taxes which are related to motoring (e.g. VAT on fuel, vehicles, parts, servicing, insurance tax, parking charges, bridge tolls, fines) it is higher. Health and environmental costs are not taken into account in these figures. The NHS has an estimate of £42 million for last year, with a forecast of £5bn by 2035 (assuming we do nothing). I’ve seen calculations of the environmental equivalent “cost” of CO2 emissions at about £3bn per year but I can’t find the references.

For you, you could just change the right hand shifter and RD, Wiggle have the right side STI for £57 and if you’re a new customer you can get £10 off at the mo.

Great shout – off to have a look 🙂

    Thanks.

I’ve been toying with the idea of  updating my commuter from Tiagra 4600 to 105 5800 or even R7000, but there seems to be a general shortage of components at the mo.

Decided to just clean and lube the r/h shifter to see if that improves the slight laziness it has developed. Suspect I will upgrade to 11 speed by summer anyway…

I’ve always been happy with rim brakes but I have one set of wheels – ironically my winter wheels – on which they just don’t work as well. Calipers are 105 with koolstop pads which work really well on two other sets of wheels

    Had lots of bikes:

    Suzuki TS125ERN, Vespa PX125, Lambretta TV175 (225), Suzuki RGV250, Kawasaki KMX200, Yamaha DT175MX, Yamaha TDR250, Yamaha RD500LC, Aprilia RS250, Suzuki GSXR750, Honda NC30, and a Honda CBR600RR.

I think thats the lot. Best workhorse was the TDR250, worst bike was the KMX200 (kept snapping the powervalves), biggest disappointment was the RD500LC, best sound was the Lambretta, best bike that give me the most fun was the Aprilia RS250.

Sold the last motorbike to buy a bike. If the weather was nice I would cycle rather than get the motorbike out, and if the weather was bad, I’d use the car, so there was no point having a motorcycle. Sold it to a local dealer and then walked to the local bike shop and bought a Propel 🙂

    Just to add another fyi…

Just to add another fyi… friend bought a Btwin recently. Set up very well by the store, but the wheels were rough. Stripped them out and the cones were way too tight and although there was plenty of grease, not much of it was on the bearings. Spin fine once sorted.

It’s worth remembering that none of the people who have lost their lives after being involved in an accident whilst riding bikes and wearing a helmet, are able to add their anecdata to these discussions.

I had an odd drivetrain noise I couldn’t trace. Replaced the BB, chainset, chain and jockey wheels. It was the freehub! Good luck tracking it down!
