Full gas a la Cavendish, then after 200m raise both arms and shout “YES!!”. Stop …. wait til he passes and tell him he was the best lead out man you’ve had since Renshaw and you owe it all to your team.

Repeat another 10 or 12 times until:
    a) You get bored
    b) He hits you on the nose
    c) You run out of legs
    d) Some younger bloke does the same to you (Sagan, Guardini, etc,)

Brilliant, although I think B may happen sooner than you think if you also give him the obligatory sweaty cuddle each time.

Ooh, I just looked at the Squadra, it’s gorgeous!

I want one. I fancy Shimano Ultegra, but I think a frame like that needs some Campag TLC perhaps.

Go for the condor. You might need to fettle with the geometry over time, changing stem length for example, but unless you’re a really unusual shape yourself, this sounds awesome.

Mind if I ask what those frames are made of and how much they cost?

    Good god, the tour now
Good god, the tour now consists of 21 matches and 180 players does it?!

I think it means that you can transfer and score the next day. The bit about the following weekends matches is another hangover from a FF game.

My club has set up a league on there, suppose I should give it a go, but not scoring on TTs? I’ll just leave out Wiggo and Evans then eh?!

I slipped on some diesel and
I slipped on some diesel and crashed just before I joined a club. I knew it had knocked my confidence, but I’ve spent time copying others (and reading tips from authorititive sources) when descending, cornering etc. it’s coming on well, I had a moment when I thought I’d gone into a bend too quick, but composed my thoughts and remembered to look out towards the exit. The bike leaned over even further, I flew through and out and I felt great afterwards.

Forget speed, focus on technique and smoothness. Remember to relax, avoiding muscle tension or holding your breath during the hairy bits. Speed will be a byproduct of increased confidence, not the other way round.

I also increased my confidence by upgrading my tyres and brake blocks.

    Good luck.

I must admit to having drafted without taking a pull when on a recent sportive, simply because I was over my limit already.

At one point I apologised for this to the guy in front, and received the reply: “Don’t worry about it, I’m f***ed as well, just hang on!”

Get the pic taken, all too often they mysteriously ‘go away’ very quickly and without notice when someone’s crashed etc.

Hope you’re feeling better soon, sounds nasty.

    When I was about 15, I was
When I was about 15, I was pedalling along on my Raleigh Banana (anyone remember those?!), all 28lb of it, in my cheap kit (shorts weren’t paddded, my arse must have been indestructible!) on a summer evening, on my regular 40-mile route which I tended to complete at an average of about 15mph. I could hear this hum behind me, and after a bit this guy (maybe in his 30’s or something) comes past on a low-profile bike, Zipp 3-spoke on the front, disc on the back, tri-bars, teardrop helmet, you name it. Greg Lemond had turned the tour ITT upside down in the last couple of years with all this stuff, so it was not a cheap setup.

About 1 mph faster than me. Like a slow-motion alien.

Then he gets in front, finds himself out of gas, and just sits there in front of me. After about a mile, he shouts something, then as we pass some marshals, they say something about drafting, and he shouts “this kid won’t get off my wheel!”

I, erm, have rather a temper when I get going. I’ve grown up now, so haven’t lost it in ages, but back then I didn’t have the maturity. I may have, rather robustly, offered to assist him in wearing his 3 grand bike. The funny bit was in watching him wrestle with the decision; ignore the kid and complete the TT ASAP, or dismount to batter the kid and forget the performance?!

I think this is probably quite subjective. I’ve used rollers but never felt that confident on them. (To be fair, I was only young, maybe I would feel different now).

It was used, but some months previously. ISTR him feeling quite relieved that the whole team-backed house of cards was coming down; he had tried it, ended up loathing himself, stopped, and was subsequently seen as a bit of an oddity by the rest of the team. So when everyone got raided, he sat there smiling. Then a grinning bobby comes out of the bedroom with these items that DM had forgotten he had.
