Ok, weirdly, I just called my optician to get a copy of my prescription, and they’re now doing Bolle specs with inserts.

Checking out the Bolle website, it seems that their newest innovation (will be interesting to see whether I can get hold of this stuff) is a lens technology called B-thinactive, which basically means thin wraparounds for strong prescriptions without inserts – from +6.00 to -8.00!

I’ll let you know how I get on…

Hmm, not having much luck it seems. I was about to look at the Adidas range suggested by bfslxo, but as per thehatter’s post, I do indeed have long lashes – they have been known to touch my normal specs as it is.

I thought the Oakley thing might be a solution, but a quick call to a local Oakley-authorised optician (rated for custom and prescription eyewear according to Oakley), they only go up to a -5, which won’t work for me (-6.5)

I do notice that there are a multitude of anti-fog solutions about, so assuming they work (anyone used them?), I just need to find a dealer who will provide a refund on the sunglasses if the inserts sit too close to my eye to be of any use.

@Michael – I wish I could get prescription lenses for £70! 🙂 High index lenses usually cost me around £200! :O

    Thanks everyone for the help!

Chris – Suppose I should have
Chris – Suppose I should have pre-empted that one! 🙂 Nope, overuse/abuse of contacts in my drunken youth mean I can no longer wear them.

Oakley will do prescription lenses in their less sporty (read: less wraparound) frames, but not to my prescription strength.

Edit: I did look at the Optilabs site yesterday, but Croydon would be a bit of a trek. As an example, I know that one of my ears is slightly higher than the other, so my specs arms always need adjusting a little, hence the need to visit in person.

    Further to Gkam84’s comment,
Further to Gkam84’s comment, I think a reasonable example is merino wool jerseys. You can plump for Rapha or Cervo Rosso and leave your wallet begging for mercy, or to a lesser extent, shuttvr. I don’t know how realistic it would be to drive costs down on this stuff (the wool has to come from NZ for a start…), but I think you could do far worse than looking at this guy:

    http://www.oregoncyclewear.com/woolcyclingjerseys.html

Think up a cool design, order a bunch to get the economies of scale ($56/£40 for a long sleeve wool jersey when buying 15+), and I think if you could sell them on for less than the current UK offerings, or the price I could buy one by ordering from him direct, then you could be on to a winner. I’ll buy one!

Just so everyone knows, this thread was originally named ‘Do Cyclists Have A Death Wish?’ by the OP. The title has subsequently been edited.

Well that sheds a slightly different light on things! /:)

    I wondered this as well,
I wondered this as well, because you could potentially end up with a team of guys on all different bikes, but I suppose this must happen – you wouldn’t want to be forced onto a new, unfamiliar bike for such a big race? I do know cavendish asked his contact at specialised for a ‘stealth black’ venge for the WC, so minus any HTC/sponsor branding.

Hmmm- I’d like to say I’m going straight for the rapha, but in truth the sportful sounds a bit closer to the price I was thinking of! Thanks for the suggestions, I’ve found the sportful for £40.

    Thanks for all the replies,
Thanks for all the replies, loads of info there. Re-reading my post though, I didn’t word it very well – for one thing, I meant to say that I want to reach 21-22mph average for a sustained blast on my current (relatively flat) 20-30 mile rides. Clearly, over 20mph for several hours would be a rather bigger ask, and as pointed out, is rather irrelevant once hills, wind etc on a sportive are taken into account.

I should probably provide a little more background; this isn’t my first road bike, but a combination of pedalling-related knee pain, work commitments and a local cycling club which didn’t agree with me conspired to put me off and I sold my bike. Fast forward 15 years and Podiatry is quite accessible, so my knee pains have yet to resurface thanks to orthotic insoles. However, I mention this lot because I’m hesitant to find a club again. I’m also pushed for time, so a 6-hour day out with a 1-hour cafe stop on a Sunday is out of the question. That said, if anyone can point me in the direction of a small friendly group in Manchester that ride early at the weekends and would welcome a friendly but inexperienced addition to their number, I’ll certainly take a look. Exercising in a group is always more enjoyable, and the experience, as pointed out, would be invaluable. I’m only really intending to compete against myself though Pete – I would also be looking for something in between the polar opposites you mention.

Thanks for all the links as well – some of the articles/blogs have good training tips etc. I think I’ll continue to do what I’m doing on a weekend morning, get in some easy evening rides to add some miles, then in Spring use the Bike Radar article on getting out after work as a guide (thanks Simon E). I do have a computer, as suggested. It’s a Polar that I bought used from a colleague, although I’m struggling to get the cadence sensor to work. If I had a spare grand lying around I’d be reading this page on an ipad, never mind using an SRM! 😀

Right, best I crack on and get my core conditioning work done. Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!
