Went out with a decent club the other day and it was swift. 25 man group absolutely flying at 8 am on a Sunday morn. I’d join a club just to keep me off the Kronenbourgs on a Sat night. I won’t though, not really a clubman type..
Do we think riding long solo rides makes you a stronger rider or is it the sprinting off the corners in a group that’s gonna help more?

I think they both have benefits – obviously solo rides mean you’re always working on the front, but fast group rides are where I really get my fitness – they push me outside my comfort zone, the group is a buzz and you keep coming back for more, and before you know it, you’re the one pushing on the front.

To the OP, my long Sunday rides tend to be in a group, and shorter solo adventures if I get out during the week. However, I’m moving house soon, not sure if I will find a local group out at 8am (Holmes Chapel if anyone can point me in the right direction). I might have to ride the 20 miles to meet up with my current lot.

Bring on the days when I can
Bring on the days when I can have a UAV follow me.

    Action camera? Check
    Spare wheels? Check
    Tools? Check
    Food? Check
    Extra clothing? Check
Instruct it to complete a climb at a specific pace for the purpose of pacing? Check

Little arms that pop out to fix my bike for me? Ok, maybe that’s taking it a little far.
Frikkin laser beams with a prejudice towards aggressive drivers? Er…

Scrolling up and down on the website is fun!

I wonder if the drivers have received some cycle awareness training or if you were simply passed by a decent driver? Hopefully the former, if I was running the firm and putting those graphics on the vans you can be damn sure I’d want to minimise the risk of any “oh the irony, just close passed/wiped out by a Yodel van with ‘we love cyclists’ graphic!” posts turning up on social media…

As far as I recall it all comes from the days of proper sports clubs, and the whole ‘First claim’ ‘second claim’ thing is to prevent say, Sir Wiggo, turning up, joining every club within 50 miles of Chorley and winning every club championship then taking home 16 crates of beer, three sheep, a black pudding, two hundredweight of coal, three horseshoes, a pair of socks, a pair of clogs, two new collars, a waistcoat, two tin buckets, and a new string vest.

Haha, I love the thought of wiggo racing his bollocks off for that lot!

I don’t personally see a problem, although I suppose you might want to avoid wearing the ‘wrong’ club kit when out for a group ride.

We have a few members who live a bit further away or even just work the wrong shifts and can’t currently ride with us as much as they used to, and they are in other clubs as well as ours in order to ensure they can get onto group rides that suit them.

How tall are you? A friend is 5″2″ and ended up buying a men’s synapse and changing the saddle etc. She loves it. The ‘sportive’ geometry (aimed at catering to the less flexible rider) also lends itself to the typically shorter female torso.

    Hope you get it sorted.

I’m not great at descending, but knew that the Trek Madone is renowned for predictable handling. Sure enough, that’s enabled me to relax and hit 50mph without incident.

With regard to epic rides, have you looked at the review of the Mason Definition posted on this site in the last day or 2?

Did a nice combo yesterday – Brickworks, Windgather, Down into the Goyt and along past the reservoir, up the nice climb to the ranger station, carry on towards the Cat & Fiddle but take the left halfway up, up to the top then take a left-right, all the way up to Flash, fill your water bottle from the tap outside the church, then down to Wildboarclough, come back along towards the Cat & Fiddle, but take the left turn up the nasty steep bit into the forest, then on to Macclesfield.

From about mile 20 to 47-ish on here:

Check out the Cheshire cobbled classic sportive site, there is a hill called the cork screw! At last years event only one bike got to the top and that was on a high geared mountain bike. It is cobbled muddy and 45%. Sorry I can’t advise the exact location as I just followed signs and GPS during the ride.

Is the ride suitable for a road bike then? Sounds fun.
