Or can you get one on hire purchase – only 700 quid a month!

Ouch! You’d really want to be driving it all the time to get your money’s worth. Would be a bit galling to have it sat on the drive whilst you cycled across Liverpool to various dance classes. Not to mention the difficulty in transporting a class load of hula-hoops by bicycle!

    It is rough being caught

It is rough being caught multiple times by a speed camera and not getting the opportunity after the first offence to correct your behaviour. I have a little sympathy, but then she was playing the ‘can’t afford taxi/driver’ card, whilst also driving a £72k Audi E-tron on a wage of £2.3k per month. Summat doesn’t add up to me.

I’m not sure… apparently her Mum lives about 4 miles away:

‘I also care for my mum who lives in Huyton, about four or four miles from where I live. She is 82 years old and has an underlying blood condition. She has to attend hospital regularly for blood tests.

Oh, and she works about 4 miles away from home too. A pleasant 4 mile ride with a good portion through a park. No motorist could be subjected to such punishment!

    I’ve been using the Garmin

I’ve been using the Garmin 530 for a few months and have nothing bad to say about it. It’s working well for me.

The only thing is the price is not great at the moment – it’s been down to £160, so worth keeping an eye on it in the sales…

    Driver not disqualified

Driver not disqualified despite accruing 14 points:

“new to the area” and “think of the children” the key mitigating factors. They ought to add “can’t read signs” to that list too…

    Well, according to the Strava

Well, according to the Strava heatmap the A43 Silverstone bypass does get some cycling traffic. There’s even a segment. The local legend has done it once!

I’ve not been on this bit,

I’ve not been on this bit, but did cross it further north near Towcester on some similarly dubious cycling infrastructure:

    I’ve not been back.

That 75cm strip is not a cycle lane, there would have been a circular blue sign if it was. Nope, that blue rectangular sign means:
“Route recommended for pedal cycles on the main carriageway of the road.

The council, in their infinite wisdom, determine this to be an excellent route for cycling on the road – fully recommended!!

I’m more interested in how a cyclist got a custodial sentence using an ancient law. Yet killer drivers, charged under a recent law, most often get a suspended sentence and are frequently found not guilty.

    Agree. I have some sympathy,

Agree. I have some sympathy, it’s never nice when a company folds and people lose their jobs. However, that’s the risk you take when you move to a new employer for a bigger salary.

I have more sympathy for people whose careers are cut short due to injury or illness. She needs to take a bit of humble pie, accept that she’s been unlucky, but be grateful she could still turn it around. Take whatever is going to keep in the game and hope for a better deal in next seasons signings.

If I thought that my personal risk, as opposed to a population-level statistic, of having a serious head injury in the shower was significant I’d do something to address that too.

I think we have arrived at the answer to your question, so be baffled no more: It’s down to personal choice.

I actually think I’m probably at more risk of falling in the shower than falling off my town bike on the short trip to the shops. Both are risks I deem low enough to not worry about a helmet in either case.

I also think that sadly there is some peer pressure to wear a helmet cycling, certainly when I once forgot to bring my bike helmet mountain biking, I got some very disapproving looks! (yes, I deem the risks when pushing it on the mountain bike warrant it, but I just rode less recklessly that day)

I can imagine there’s some peer pressure to not wear one walking to the supermarket, I’ve never tried it, but I assume I’d get the same disapproving looks! But your argument for wearing one on a bike still holds true for walking to the shops: surely it’s safer, better than not wearing one at all and of no impediment? So why might you not wear one? Choice.

The helmet argument is not one of “for or against helmets”, but one of “for or against choice” and the right to not be criticised for the choice you make.

    Limiting EV acceleration

Limiting EV acceleration would need to be done by government legislation, but I can see this happening, not just for safety, but for environmental reasons. In the same way some appliances have been power capped (eu vacuume cleaner regs for example).

Emission regulations were a bit of a barrier to mass-producing powerful petrol/diesel vehicles. I’m not sure there are any downsides to limiting the peak power of an EV, bar its cost price and insurance premium.

I always wear shoes when cycling, even though there’s less risk of stepping on glass or in poo.

But do you wear a helmet when walking? If not, then why not? People fall over and hit their heads when walking. Surely it’s no less onerous putting on a helmet for a walk to the shops, than it is for riding there on a bike?

    I’m surprised all those

I’m surprised all those police failed to stop an unlicensed driver riding what amounts to an illegal motorbike that is not taxed nor insured!

If they had managed to catch up with the miscreant, the vehicle should have been seized and crushed on the spot!

I’m sure they’ll have words with the DVLA, the fine will be in the post and the points will be waiting for him when he applies for a provisional licence:

    Blimey, that’s some bad

Blimey, that’s some bad driving from ‘professionals’ who should know better. Particularly the last one, what a stupid place to pass.

It does take a while for videos to appear. The Upride website is provided by the makers of the Cycliq cameras, so I’m pretty sure some of this is them making sure any footage from cycliq cameras hasn’t been made to look bad (compressed / cropped etc.).

But as you say, this does mean the quality is quite good. The mapping feature is a good way to build a picture of where the trouble spots are, or a least it would be if there were more people uploading videos. At the moment, it just seems to indicate locations where people are cycling with cameras and uploading to Upride! Although I’m not the only contributor in my town and it looks like there’s someone else uploading near to Garstang too.
