Video: Unboxing the Lazer Bullet helmet

The Bullet from Lazer is an aero road helmet with a sliding vent, and was used by the Lotto Soudal team at the Tour de France. We unbox it and take a closer look...

It's been a long time coming after first being revealed at Eurobike last summer - but the Lazer Bullet helmet is finally available to pre-order with the first batch shipping out in September. It's already been debuted by riders such as André Greipel in professional races this year, and we've been lucky enough to get hold of one early .  

The Bullet is a new addition to Lazer's road helmet range which includes the Z1, which had a removable plastic shell as a solution for enhancing aerodynamics. It didn't look great and judging from Lazer's wind tunnel testing of it verses the new bullet, it didn't perform great either. The Bullet gains 7 watts over the Z1 at 45kph in the wind tunnel, and they claim it's up to 10 watts faster in a sprint - pretty significant figures.

The most interesting feature here is this Air Slide ventilation system on the top, which is a pretty simple yet well thought out solution to provide max aerodynamics when you need them and more air when you’re sitting in a pack on hot days. You simply slide the vent up for cooling, or down when every millisecond counts in a breakaway or bunch sprint. It's similar to Bell's Star Pro helmet that also has a sliding ventilation port. In road.cc's review our tester Dave Arthur felt the Star Pro lacked ventilation, so we'll be hoping for better cooling from the Bullet even with the closed vent. 

The Bullet has a ratchet dial at the back as is normal on most helmets but this one has a nice chrome overlay. The Bullet is also compatible with Lazer’s Lifebeam sensor, which attaches to the helmet and measures your heart rate, so you don’t need an additional strap or watch.

Lazer say the weight is 315g, although our scales measured the size small as 318g so ever so slightly heavier than claimed. There are two versions of the Bullet available in four different sizes for optimum fit. Our test version is priced at £199.99 and comes in four different colours, and for £219.99 you can also get the bullet with the MIPS crash protection system inside.
