Disgruntled commuters have expressed their disgust at rail operator Southern’s decision to remove a bike rack facility at East Croydon station over security fears, namely that the staff car park the bike parking is found in has experienced unauthorised vehicle access and rail chiefs fear the station could be targeted by a car bomb.
A petition has been launched urging Southern to keep the bike rack, on the Cherry Orchard Road side of the station, which cyclists say is “the only properly secure cycle storage at East Croydon”. However, operator Southern has this week told Inside Croydon that it intends to cut off access to the staff car park and so the rack “itself will no longer be accessible and will be removed”.
Explaining the decision, a Southern spokesperson said: “This bike rack is located within a staff car park. We have an ongoing challenge with unauthorised vehicles accessing the car park which poses an issue from a security perspective given the proximity of the car park to the train lines and platforms – ie from a car bomb perspective.

“The site has been highlighted as an issue from a security perspective and to mitigate it we need to make the car park secure. Unfortunately, given the layout of the security wall, this will mean the rack itself will no longer be accessible and so will be removed.”

The explanation has prompted some questions about why the car park cannot be secured from unauthorised vehicles without the need to cut access for cyclists too, however the rail operator appears set on the decision, saying only that “we are hopeful that more [bike storage] can be added in the future as part of wider public realm works for this part of Croydon generally”.
Chris Galpin set up the petition challenging the decision and reacted to the explanation by stating: “Southern’s response makes no sense at all.”
“Installing a car barrier while allowing pedestrian and cycle access would be the obvious solution to address the concerns,” he added, before pointing out that one stop down the line, at South Croydon, there is also a car park “right next to the railway”.
“It seems like there are one set of rules for one part of the borough, and different rules elsewhere,” he said.
Council sources told the local news website that the matter has never been raised at meetings of the local authority’s “advisory forum on active, sustainable and accessible transport”.
Notices have appeared at the rack communicating the intention to close access from 1 July, more than 420 people having now signed the petition to save the cycle parking. Making the case, Mr Galpin explained how it is “the only properly secure cycle storage at East Croydon” and that many people rely on the “crucial” facility while completing their commutes via train.
“The cycle storage has a roof and is covered by CCTV,” he said. “It’s one of very few places near the station I feel comfortable parking my bike for a whole day, knowing it will still be there when I get back. However, Southern Rail is now threatening to close this crucial amenity with little notice, no public consultation, and no plan to provide a replacement.
“The proposed ‘alternative’ cycle parking is not only a long distance away — it also lacks the same security measures. No shelter, no CCTV. Without these protections, many of us will fear for the safety of our bikes. Ultimately, many people may decide not to cycle – or even not to get the train at all. The loss of secure cycle parking is a step backward in our efforts to promote sustainable transportation in Croydon.
“The closure notice was put up on 19th June, less than two weeks before the cycle storage is due to be removed. Southern Rail have rushed this through without any consultation, or any consideration for the impact it will have on people in Croydon. 19th June is also, ironically, ‘UK Clean Air Day’ — a day to raise awareness of the over 29,000 deaths caused each year by air pollution.
“It is crucial that Southern Rail reconsider this decision. Not just for me, but for hundreds of cyclists who depend on this facility. We demand a proper discussion and a commitment to maintaining secure and convenient cycle parking at East Croydon Station. Sign this petition to urge Southern Rail to keep the cycle parking open, preserving our right to safe and sustainable commuting options in Croydon. A simple bike ride to the station should not turn into a worry over the security of our bikes. Let’s ensure our voices are heard before decisions are made without the community’s input.”

So put it somewhere else!!
The bike racks in the Centre
The bike racks in the Centre in Bristol are always cordoned off a few days each side of Remembrance Sunday, for a similar reason (the fear that someone might park a bomb-bike too near the Cenotaph).
They might want to make sure
They might want to make sure they keep any motor vehicles away from the area – they’re a clear and present threat to … the war memorial!

I doubt the same could be said for her car, regardless of how “tank-like” she may have thought it was
Those tanks can … just
Perhaps the tank’s owner hadn’t paid The Man? Those tanks can … just break!

1st terrorist : “I propose we plant a car bomb at East Croydon and kill lots of infidel crusader commuting office workers!”
2nd terrorist : “Yes lots will die and and the screams of the maimed will scare the crows from the trees.”
3rd terrorist : “We can only access the carpark if we apply for a parking ticket online. We have to do that because the bike shed has been moved from the main carpark.”
1st terrorist : “Too difficult. let’s target an ElAl flight instead. We only have to deal a pre flight interview by Mossad agents and armed, trained onboard sky marshals.”
All terrorists : “Sorted!”
Well quite, anyone who wants
Well quite, anyone who wants bomb the railway at East Croydon can simply board a train and leave a bomb on it or indeed leave one on the platform, why would you try and leave your device away from the railway where it is very unlikely to cause any significant damage?
There is a lot of development in Croydon at the moment, it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if once the car park has been closed and the brouhaha died down Southern suddenly announce that they have struck a deal to sell the land for apartments or office buildings.
Talk about stereotyping. It
Talk about stereotyping. It shows how ignorant and stupid most people are when it comes to the subject of “terrorism”. Thirty years ago you would have used an Irish inflection and ‘paddy’ jokes, no doubt to make ‘point’. Surely the past months have shown who the biggest terrorists are – one whose leader is indicted by the ICC and other is a semi literate buffoon.

I fully agree with your last
I fully agree with your last sentence. And I’m not stereotyping. I am using an example of incidents that have taken place in the UK in the recent past.
My comment is aimed at the deluded pomposity of Southern Rail.
I trust they are banning cars
I trust they are banning cars from the car park and station environs for the same reason? No? Really? Who’d have thunk it.
I can only imagine that the
I can only imagine that the CIA have tipped off MI6 that the East Croydon station is high on a terrorist hit list somewhere, and the bomb will be delivered by car in the staff car park: so you can’t really blame them for taking immediate action to deal with this threat.
Or it could just be that one of the staff had his car scratched and blames a cyclist.
I’m not clear what steps can be taken to address this clearly ridiculous situation of effectively banning bikes because of the threat of a car bomb. Letters to MP? Bikes locked across the access doors? Hold a protest and invite the press? Appeal to Southern’s management?

How about they convert the staff car park to be just bike storage and not allow any cars into it?
Once again selfish drivers
Once again selfish drivers ruin it for everyone though assuming the rack was for the general public, said rack being in the staff carpark why wasn’t there some sort of pass enabled barrier with pedestrian access? Removing the bike rack may just allow said “bomb” vehicle closer to the station unless they’re going to bollard the hell out of the area 💫
As usual, it is self-driving
As usual, it is self-driving/autonomous vehicles involved….
“We have an ongoing challenge with unauthorised vehicles accessing the car park…”
Maybe someone should put a stop to them and require they don’t have any “AI” technology and must be driven by a human at all times?
And yes… lets deal with a problem caused by DRIVERS by restricting the users (cyclists) that are NOT the problem at all…
The ironic thing with this is
The ironic thing with this is that you only have to go one stop south to South Croydon train station. The car parking area there is against the railings that sit next to the railway line. Looking on a Google Maps satellite view I reckon there are about 50 parking spaces sat next to the railway line (just separated by a metal fence). If someone wanted to do a car bomb they could do it far more easily there. Every train through East Croydon runs through South Croydon. Similarly, further down the same line there are multiple other stations where the same “opportunity” exists for anyone with harmful intentions. As a result, I can’t really see why they have done this, unless they are suddenly going to stop car parking at a bunch of other stations.
You’re missing the point:
You’re missing the point: CYCLISTS.

Or indeed, as I know living on that line but closer to the centre of town, the number of places where the railway line runs along parallel to a street with parked cars separated by no more than railings. The decision makes no logical sense whatsoever, as I said below I suspect this excuse is simply a ruse to allow the land to be sold off for development.
