Clive Mitchell Cycles in Summercourt was broken into during early hours of Saturday morning

Thieves have stolen more than £50,000 worth of bicycles from a bike shop in Cornwall.

Family-owned Clive Mitchell Cycles in Summercourt, five miles south-east of Newquay, broke the news of the raid in a post on Facebook.

“Unfortunately the store will be closed until further notice though we will do our best to open at some point later today, we’ll update you here as soon as we can.

“The thieves have taken a lot of high value mountain bikes.”

In a subsequent post on Facebook, it said: “Well ... it’s been quite a long day here at CMC Summercourt.

“We’d just like to say a massive thank you to the local community in Summercourt, the wider cycling community and our customers for all of the support shown today.

“Please share and let us or the police know if you see any of these bikes going for a ‘too good to be true price’. Somebody somewhere knows who these guys are.

“Just to be clear and to reassure our customers, no sold/ordered bikes or customers own bikes have been taken.”

Devon & Cornwall Police are investigating and can be contacted on 101.

Last week, we reported how a number of bike shops across the country have been targeted by criminals in recent weeks, with high-value thefts taking place following break-ins at Corley Cycles in Milton Keynes, JE James in Rotherham and JC Cook Cycles in Grimsby.

I thought the way its been described previously for these kind of thefts, was the people stealing the bikes were just the middlemen who get them chucked in the back of a shipping container as quickly as possible, and they are half way round Europe...where they then can get broken down into components or sold as a whole...before they've even been noticed gone

It's a common problem all over Europe.

Two bike shops in Luz Saint Sauver (start of the Tourmalet)had a load of expensive bikes stolen

They turned up in the back of a truck in Spain

Who is buying this gear?

Has there not been a single "honey trap" GPS-broadcasting bike nicked from any of this recent spate across the country?

Would seem like a sensible precaution for any bike shop at the moment. With the proliferation of e-bikes, it's not like the shop would need to worry about the gps running out of battery any time soon either.

If I was the robbing type I'd break the bikes down and get rid that way. Loads of stuff on ebay is legitimately of the 'removed from new bike due to upgrade' and the thieves probably blend right in. These clearly aren't the typical steal a bike for a back of smack types.

Loads of hassle and each transaction increases the chance of being caught. Theives rarely part out bikes, the aim is to move them on asap.

Too slow. You don’t want the fuzz knocking on your shed door asking you to explain why you’ve got 20 bikes in various states of disassembly. You want them off your hands ASAP.

I hope his insurance will cover the cost of the stolen goods. It would be such a shame if they had to close their doors and sell up to cover the loss.

Wonder if the thieving scrotes employed the latest in Kiwi ramraiding techniques?

Seriously though, hope the cops catch them and the shop recovers it's stock.
