Barring misfortune on the way into Paris tomorrow, Geraint Thomas will stand on the top step of the Champs-Elysees podium tomorrow as the first Welsh winner of the Tour de France aster riding a storming individual time trial in the French Basque Country tomorrow.

The 32 year old is posed to seal Team Sky’s sixth victory in seven years, and has ridden in four of those editions in support of Chris Froome, who rode a terrific race today to get back into third overall above Primoz Roglic of LottoNL-Jumbo, clearly sufferingf the after-effects of yesterday’s stage win.

Froome was unable to make headway on second overall Tom Dumoulin of Team Sunweb, who edged him out by 1 second to take the stage win, with Thomas a further 14 seconds back in thiord place.
