Video: Police trying to trace driver who hit Leicester cyclist and drove away

Cyclist somehow avoided serious injury

Leicestershire Police have appealed for witnesses after a cyclist in his forties was left with minor injuries after being hit by a motorist in Leicester. Footage shows that the driver sped away from the scene immediately afterwards.

The incident happened in Humberstone Lane at around 8.18am on Tuesday, June 5 near the junction with Barkbythorpe Road.

The car came to a stop in the road alongside a bus and then pulled off again when the cyclist was alongside, knocking him towards the bus.

The cyclist did not require hospital treatment.

Police Constable Richard Smith said: “The cyclist was lucky not to suffer more serious injuries and we need to speak to the driver of the car involved to establish the full circumstances.

“The collision happened when people would have been on their way to work. As the footage shows there were a number of people in the area travelling in vehicles including cars and vans as well as on a bus.

“We are urging anyone who has any information in relation to the incident, or who knows who the driver of the car is, to make contact with us.

“We also ask anyone who was driving in the area and who has a dashcam to check this and get in touch if you have any footage in relation to the incident.”

Anyone with any information, call 101 quoting crime number 18000257497.

Don't expect much assistance from the van driver in helping identifying the vehicle

Unbelievable! By the way the silver 'CVN' van anchors up prior to the collision, I'd say that the Clio has stopped and flashed the bus out. As prev suggested, initially the bus driver doesn't see the cyclist. BUT THEN... the Clio driver gets a sudden rush of blood to the head and deliberately cleans up the cyclist. Bizarre and terrible. At the same time.

My first thought was kudos to the bus driver who seemed to be aware of the cyclist almost under the bus wheels and stopped very quickly. But looking at the video again I'm not sure why the bus driver is pulling out into passing traffic from the bay on the left side of the road. Maybe it was this manoeuvre that forced the bicycle into what the car driver considered to be their space and which then led to what looks like a very deliberate swerve into and attack on the cyclist.

Agreed. The bus driver pulled out into oncomming traffic and I suspect he didn't initially see the cyclist. Before the bus pulled out the Clio gave the cyclist plenty of room so I don't know what happened  to make him/her decide to hit the cyclist and do a runner. The bus driver should be charged with careless driving as it was their action that initiated the whole incident.

The bus should have cctv and cams on board shouldn't it?

Looks like a Black Clio 2005-12 model

I reckon we're looking at at least a £60 fine here (if found guilty, obvs)

That driver is a miserable excuse for a human being.

It was just some young girl driving who has "since been suffering from “survivor’s guilt” and had frequent nightmares" so they will get off.

Surely CVN property developers would be the obvious place to start.
The way the Clio stopped and allowed the cyclist to pass, prior to driving in to them, shows it was clearly premeditated and regardless of what may or may not have happened previously was an attempt to cause harm or worst.

In other words: attempted murder.

But it's against a cyclist - the only surprising thing for me is that the Police have actually appealed for witnesses.
