Police in Norfolk crack down on school bike thefts

Police in Norfolk have launched a crackdown on thieves who are stealing bikes from secondary schools in the county.

As part of the initiative, officers working with the Safer Schools Partnership will be marking bikes and encouraging students to add details to the Bike Register database.

Pupils will also be taught how to lock bikes properly, and schools will be given combination locks so that any bicycles that aren’t locked up can be secured to deter opportunistic thieves.

PC Garry Hoadley of Norfolk Constabulary, who works with the Safer Schools Partnership, said: "It’s hoped this initiative will deter opportunistic thieves and save young people from the inconvenience and financial implications of having their bike stolen.

"By signing up to Bike Register the students will be helping the police ensure stolen bikes can be returned to their rightful owners, as well as securing convictions against those who commit this kind of crime.

"I would like to thank the schools for working in partnership with the police on this project and I would urge parents to ensure their child is provided with a bike lock if they cycle to school,” he added.
