Cyclist in Canada falls one lap short of age group Hour record

Planning another attempt in a fortnight

When Graeme Obree failed to break the Hour record in 1993, he famously took a second successful shot at it less than 24 hours later after a bit of a rest and a huge bowl of cornflakes. Giuseppe Marinoni is going to give it a couple of weeks before trying again after he fell just one lap short – but he is 80.

In October 2012, Marinoni, the founder of Quebec frame builder Cycles Marinoni, set the 75-79 age group Hour record at the Montichiari Velodrome in Italy, covering 35.728km.

Encouragingly, Inside Halton reports that his attempt on the 80-84 age group record actually saw him go further than this – but he was nevertheless a lap short of the 38.657km covered by France's Paul Martinez in June.

Tony Girardin, who made a film called The Fire in the Frame (trailer above) about the cyclist, said: “He’s going to try again in two weeks in Mexico. He’s in good shape now so he’s got to keep trying. The story continues.”

Marinoni made his attempt on a bike he made for close friend and Canadian Olympian Jocelyn Lovell in 1978. Lovell won gold.

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

Cool if he does it on that frame!

Bike companies are missing a trick here though, lend a modern track bike to someone attempting an age group record, free publicity.
