Tom Dumoulin, who spent six days in the race leader’s jersey at last year’s Giro d’Italia, is back in the maglia rosa after riding a storming individual time trial in today’s tenth stage of the Italian Grand Tour.

The Sunweb rider stopped the clock at 50 minutes 37 seconds at the end of the 39.8 kilometre stage from Foligno to Montefalco as the race resumed after yesterday’s second rest day.

Team Sky’s Geraint Thomas, who had been second overall at the start of Sunday’s Stage 9 before losing more than five minutes to his rivals after crashing just before the climb of the Blockhaus, set the second fastest time today.

He finished 49 seconds behind Dumoulin, and moves up to 11th overall, but is 5 minutes 33 seconds behind the Dutchman in the overall standings.

Overnight leader Nairo Quintana posted the 23rd fastest time, ceding the best part of 3 minutes to the new race leader, but remains second overall, 15 seconds ahead of Trek-Segafredo’s Bauke Mollema.

Following the stage, Dumoulin said: “Looking at the results I’ve had a good race. But I was fighting with myself and I actually didn’t feel good. In the last time trials I did I kind of gave up and I was disappointed afterwards. So today I never gave up.

“2.23 is a nice gap to have before the mountains but I lost several minutes in one day at the Vuelta so I know by experience that the Giro is far from over.”
