Cycling Video Roundup – thrills and skills and belly laughs

Just about every sector of the bike community covered in this week's video round-up...

Adventure biking, BMX, time-trialing (almost), triathlon (almost), fixies, couriering, night riding, road racing, we’ve got it all this week in a video format, sometimes good, sometimes bad.

Tony Spray - Poetry in Paint

Antonio Tabarin - aka Tony Spray - has been painting bicycle frames for over twenty years from his work space in Treviso, Italy. He offers custom and award winning paint jobs for clients the world over, and as you can see here, turns his personal vision and considerable craftsmanship into kinetic art.

XPDTN3 TAHOE RIM TRAIL

You may have seen the XPDTN3 crew on the video round-up before, like most of us they need to cram their adventures into the weekends, so have made a thing of it, specialising in packing as much bike adventure into a long weekend as possible. Here explorers Marc Gasch and Clayton Wangbichler embark on a 3 day unsupported gravel ride around the Tahoe Rim Trail in California. As you might expect, adventures ensue.

#PackLightTravelFar

Continuing with the adventure theme; late last year five riders spent a long weekend exploring the volcanic Garrotxa region of northern Spain to highlight Rapha’s Brevet collection and bikepacking range. Riding cyclo-cross bikes along testing gravel tracks towards the foothills of the Pyrenees staying at rustic farmhouses each night the group show some serious saddlepack swayage.

Bike Unfriendly: The Mumbai Mess

Who can tackle the Indian capital's clustered rush hour traffic to deliver a dabba lunch if not the best messengers in the world? The Mumbai Mess project shows how lacking a decent infrastructure turns urban cycling into a frantic battle for space between cars, pedestrians and cyclists. And a little pat on their own back from Skoda at the end.

To The Night

This brief film from Josh & Dan makes the most of the quiet, solitude and ambient light of the city and countryside around Bristol to capture the essence of riding at night. When it might be the only time you can get a ride in.

Sometimes things go wrong

We’ve all been led astray by our map-reading skills or our Garmins, but it takes something special to lead your entire Team Katusha Alpecin time-trial squad down a dirt track. AdvenTTure-biking, it’s going to be the next big thing, you read it here first.

REFLECTION: Chas Christiansen for MASH

Here’s a video for you combined camera, tech and bike geeks. An experiment in polarizing reflective light this film was shot via a camera rig that shoots duplicate images, with one camera recording all reflectivity, and a second camera with a polarizer blocking all the reflective light. Editing between the two recordings creates this visually stunning monochrome skeletal effect.

Danny MacAskill - Drop and Roll Ride The Philippines

It’s video round-up dependable Danny MacAskill with his pals Duncan Shaw, Ali Clarkson, and Fabio Wibmer now as they travel the Drop and Roll tour around the world and land in The Philippines for the first time.

Valverde shows some cajones

Here’s Alejandro Valverde on his way to winning the Vuelta Ciclista a la Región de Murcia and bunnyhopping a large pothole to get there. The race runs through his local roads so he obviously knows every single inch of them.

Kriss Kyle - Raw 100

Raw 100 is a series designed to both highlight and test the talent and creativity of filmmakers as they have to squeeze a video into 100 seconds with no slow-motion footage and no music. With the Scottish winter in full swing Kriss Kyle took to Unit 23 in Dumbarton (his local skatepark and the largest indoor skatepark in the UK) to do some shredding. As they say.

Triathletes and bikes eh?

And just to counteract that vast array of bike handling skills, here’s a quick demonstration of a normal human being, well as normal as a triathlete on a bike can be. As this rider on a Team Dillon coaching trip shows, training is often more than just getting the miles in.

That should set you up for a weekend on the bike, try and aim for the inspiring rather than the incompetent though, yeah?

Jo Burt has spent the majority of his life riding bikes, drawing bikes and writing about bikes. When he's not scribbling pictures for the whole gamut of cycling media he writes words about them for road.cc and when he's not doing either of those he's pedaling. Then in whatever spare minutes there are in between he's agonizing over getting his socks, cycling cap and bar-tape to coordinate just so. And is quietly disappointed that yours don't He rides and races road bikes a bit, cyclo-cross bikes a lot and mountainbikes a fair bit too. Would rather be up a mountain.
