Latest TfGM cycle hub opens in Stockport

A new Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) cycle hub has opened in Stockport. Situated near the Merseyway Shopping Centre on Bridgefield Street, it will provide secure, covered parking for 42 bikes and will be covered by CCTV.

A number of TfGM cycle hubs have been funded by the Department for Transport’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund – the one before this was at Sale Metrolink stop – and for £10 a year members gain access to all of them except for the one at City Tower in Manchester city centre and the one at MediaCityUK, both of which require ‘premium’ membership.

The Stockport facility has lockers for storing helmets and other accessories and also a pump and repair stand. It can also accommodate a tandem or tricycle.

Councillor Chris Paul, the TfGM Committee’s Cycling Champion, said:

“The new cycle hub is great news for Stockport, as being able to park your bike in a secure space makes it much easier and more attractive to commute and run errands by bike.

“It's central too, near Merseyway Shopping Centre, which is ideal for everyday trips. I’d encourage people to use this chance to make a beneficial, long-term change to the way they travel – by getting on their bikes.

"Every day would be great but it doesn't have to be. If all daily motorists used alternative means of travelling into Stockport centre just one day a week this would give a 20% drop in car traffic on the network and could also help towards our 10% of all trips by bike target."
