Right, we’ve waded through the 1220 comments you left about what you like most about autumn cycling which included having to read POEMS (note to self, never, ever, ever ask people to do that again) but the psychic trauma has been worth it. We have a winner… and because the standard of entries was so high a couple of bonus runners up too who will be getting some roadcc socks.
Our Vulpine Schwag Grab podium is filled by the speakers of two universal cycling truths and one rather personal truth.
Almost but not quite for robbiezhaorobbiezhao for masterful use of the sympathy card with “The cold rivals that of the heart of my wife” – until you realise that it’s not really that cold at this time of the year, even in East Anglia. (Maybe we should send her some socks too.)
Socks also for tells-it-like-it-is “I just love wearing tights” from wrevilo but somehow it lacks the poe… magic of our winner the tells it like it even more is:
“Shining torch through the fog/mist whilst making light saber noises. Obviously…” by Mattclimb
Yep, that's autumn!
Our winner and runners up have been informed – those who posted poems about nature’s paintbrush turning the trees the colours of their fave beige Vulpine shorts – your names are on a list. First offence, but don’t push it eh.
Thanks to Vulpine for a fab competition, thanks to all of you who entered, commiserations to the 1219 of you that didn’t win, but there WILL be another schwag grab along soon.
=====================================================================================
The whole caboodle is worth more than £500 (£502 to be precise) and includes Vulpine’s:
Long Sleeve Merino T-shirt/base layer
We’ll pick the lucky winner next Monday, usual Schwag Grab rules apply.
You can find out more about Vulpine's autmn/winter range at www.vulpine.cc
Good luck!

Autumn – favorable
Autumn – favorable temperatures, beautiful colours on the trees, glorious sun rises and sun sets and slightly slippery under wheels all lend themselves to enjoyable, long hours in the saddle. Get up early to enjoy the glorious sunrises or sunsets and the smells of nature at their best.

Starting a ride in the cosy
Starting a ride in the cosy semi-darkness or a misty morning, breathing in the fresh cool air while listening to my wheels rolling over fallen yellow leaves.
Soon a rust red sun shows itself as a perfect disc hovering above the misty landscape as I see my breath condensing in the chill, glad I chose to wear gloves. I can feel my body heat rising from my chest under my jacket before escaping at the collar to warm my neck. The air is still, even the birds are quiet, no dawn chorus today, it feels as if I have the road to myself as the miles go by. The sun gradually brightens casting long shadows across the road, not too hot nor too cold, everything feels just right, relaxed and tranquil.

What I love about riding in
What I love about riding in the autumn, is waking up at 4:30 am, being out on the bike by 5 in the pitch black when no one else is around, riding out into the country.
Then an hour or so into the ride starting to see the first glimmers of light come over the horizon, then if I’ve timed it right, I can just get to the south downs valley snd see some amazing sun rises over the Kent countryside, as the sky turns the most amazing shades of orange, pink and red, with flocks of geese flying in V shapes through the air off on their winter migration, and clouds of mist lay in the valleys, waiting to numb your ears on those long descents. Truely a breathtaking site to behold.

Fahrt in den Herbst
Heute fuhr ich durchs Nagoldtal.
Der Herbst hat es wieder bunt gemacht.
Es fasziniert mich jedesmal
wie zauberhaft die Farbenpracht.
Da sah man gelb und grün, rot und braun.
Ich fuhr durch einen Märchenwald.
Faszinierend für mich, dies anzuschau´n,
Herbstgenuß, bevor es kalt.
Blätter trudelten leise zur Erde.
Viele bedeckten bereits den Boden.
Kraftlos sich manches noch wehrte.

Stepping out of the house in
Stepping out of the house in the cool morning air, switching the lights on, putting some chilled tunes on spotify and travelling through my own tunnel of light. The crisp, white, frosted grass gradually comes into focus as the sun begins to bring the feeling back to my numbed extremities. As I spin the cranks with my Clydesdale class legs the morning sun bathes Northumberland’s autumn trees in liquid gold and I reminded of the great Jo Burt – ‘This is why’
Of course there are the other days when I cannot see through my rain-washed glasses. The north east winds are doing their best to blow me far away from home and prevent me from ever returning, and I end up on my arse after taking a leaf encrusted corner just a little too fast, but it’s all good, it’s all good.

Autumn makes me feel fresh
Autumn makes me feel fresh and alive during my morning rides as I head out in the crisp cold air quite often with some nice areas of ground frost covering the grass. I also like to look at the leaves on the trees and compare all the different colours as there are so many different hues of browns this time of year.
When I get to the hills I like to look out over the valleys to view the mist shrouding the trees.

Braving the cold and reaching the top of climbs and seeing the mist in the valley bottom.
Cold crisp mornings
Cold crisp mornings contradicting the warmth and glow of the sun. The bright autumnal leaves changing the landscape and falling making you sit as you climb to avoid too much spin. Hill climbs highlighting the racing season is coming to a close and that cafe stops can recomence guilt free as miles become more important. Most of all I just love riding my bike.

How it catapults you over the bars into a heap *just* adjacent to a soft landing pad of leaves. How it leaves your shorts scuffed and an inexplicably mahoosive red graze across your summer-sized, rapidly shrinking thigh muscle tone. If summer riding builds your legs, riding in the fall and winter strengthens the mind. Getting out the door requires a little more effort. Spending a little longer kitting up – knickers or just warmers? Gilet or jacket? Shoe covers?
I hit the air and brace for the first few lungfuls. It is alternately crisp and cool and moist with the decay of summer now gone. Rich with smells of harvest dust and crusting leaves. Mornings are edged with drizzle or frost.
All the old familiar vistas change. Leaves are warmer and light is lower and cooler. Fields flip from ripe to harvested to raw soil in hours.
Windy days are now the norm, so I trade to a bike with fatter, softer tires and ride the gravel routes I haven’t seen since spring. The feel, sights and sounds are all new again. I’ve entered a new country, ripe to be explored.

Autumn gives the best riding of the year.
Any targets or aims are usually completed by now, so it’s time to take the foot off the gas a little and enjoy some more relaxed riding. However, for a few precious weeks this is coupled with the left over fitness from summer.

I’ve just started cycling
I’ve just started cycling again after a 20 year break, some might say not the best time of year. However as I cycle to work in the whipping wind and spattering rain I smile at the freedom of being able cycle along the river Derwent with sheep and cows as company.
At the end of the day I can get back into cycling gear and get on my bike and smile again as I make my way through the falling leaves and follow setting sun, these are my favourite things.

Let’s not beat around the bush. I hate Autumn. Don’t give me all that fluff about the wonderful colours, crisp air etc., it doesn’t wash. Autumn is cold, dark, wet and windy. I think there is more variety
I think there is more variety and things of interest during Autumn than any other season. It is clear that summer has ended and that things you see every day are changing, dying or hibernating. That could be seen as a negative thing yet it is magical to witness it.
The shortening days prompt us to value the time we spend outside; leaves change colour and fall from the trees, revealing the branches we haven’t seen since April; seed is sown in dark brown fields that only recently held crops ready for harvesting; the weather is variable and unpredictable, full of drama and a delight to the senses. We do not yearn for spring just yet.

Really. How twee. How about sitting at home on a cold and frosty morning selling some over priced tat on eBay that you happened to win in a competition.
Autumn cycling: Not too hot
Autumn cycling: Not too hot and not too cold, and generally dry! Occasionally chilli starts, but a satisfying finish. 🙂

Crisp, cold sunny cycle ride
Crisp, cold sunny cycle ride to work in the morning. Dusky, cool ride home in the evening. Lots of smiles, moments that get missed in a car and companiable nods from those doing the same! Fantastic 🙂
The array of different colour
The array of different colour palettes on route, the milder climate and the knowledge that the colder it gets the more dedicated the cyclists you pass are.
Crisp air and the sun coming
Crisp air and the sun coming up on the commute into work in the mornings, followed by the cycle home through the beautiful London at night.
Can’t beat it really – one of my favourite times of year.
What I like about fall riding
What I like about fall riding is the ability to tweak your temperature to your liking with layers. In the summer and winter you are stuck with what mother nature sends your way, but autumn is usually intermediate enough for you to have control. With the right piece of kit of course.

My favourite thing about
My favourite thing about Autumn cycling is the blaze of different hues.
The pinch of cold on your cheeks as you realise that this, this way of travelling is true freedom.

Getting the best of the
Getting the best of the remaining sun, with quiet roads as all the fairer-weather riders give it up for the year.
The quietness of the crisp,
The quietness of the crisp, early morning dawn rides where the mist has enveloped the valleys & hills and the particles of your breath hang in the air.
As dawn turns to day and the sun is slowly rising – with the vision by torch light giving way to the day light, the mist subsides and the beauty of the leaves by now either golden or many other hues of the spectrum suddenly encompasses the view all around. Fellow riders that pass give a knowing nod or wave, a reaffirming sign that shows we are all part of a larger community – cycling and beyond.
Moving forwards into the autumnal day, the squirrels and other animals emerge from their dens and scurry by the roadside (making sure that all the last of their preparation is done for the long hibernation ahead) and I always start to contemplate the seasons ahead.
Can you tell autumn is one of my favourite seasons? 🙂
Mist, fog, rain, wind,

Air clean and cool,
Up at dawn to ride through pools of mist, lit by sunlight,
Tights and beanie in my backpack
Unneeded as my warmth grows.
Mists clear in golden sun on golden woods,
Nights crisp and clear, stars guide my wheels.
Rough winds driving cold rain,
Icy fingers and frozen toes,
Dank fogs and dark days,
Ever pedalling into growing gloom.
Summer seems so long ago.

Around this time each year, the same painter returns to change the colours of the trees. Gripping the guiding handbars along this route that I know so well, Breathe! breathe in the last rays of the sun before it slips quietly away to its long absence. The clothes I have chosen with much care protects me from the encroaching cold. And this, is THE pleasure as my legs pedal faster and faster. Autumn is the spring of winter the painter Toulouse-Lautrec once said…
Rain, merino wool, darker
Rain, merino wool, darker nights, breaking out the strong lights. Thicker socks, lower sun, night rides, quieter roads for the ride home. Recovery guinness.
