Astana's Fabio Aru has won Stage 11 of the Vuelta a Espana on a day when pre-race favourite Nairo Quintana of Movistar abandoned the Spanish Grand Tour following a crash early on in which he suffered a suspected broken collarbone.

Aru. third overall to Quintana in May's Giro d'Italia, got clear of a select group inside the final kilometre of the 153.4km stage from Pamplona to San Miguel de Aralar and held on to win from Quintana's team mate Alejandro Valverde, who now leads the Spanish team's challlenge.

Valverde, second overall to Contador this morning, gained six bonus seconds which see him close the gap in the overall standings to 20 seconds on his compatriot.

Omeg Pharma-Quick Step rider Rigoberto Uran is third on GC, 1 minute 8 seconds off the race lead, with Team Sky's Chris Froome a further 12 seconds back in fourth place.
