Zoe Bäckstedt wins U23 European Cyclocross champs with impressive solo ride
Already the current British National Cyclocross champion and former Junior World Champion in the same discipline, Zoe Bäckstedt, 12 months after finishing fifth in the European U23 championships, was unflinching and unwavering this time round.
The Welsh rider, who also won gold at the U23 Euro time-trial this autumn, took the lead of the race in the second lap and never looked back from then on, finishing a full 34 seconds ahead her closest rival Marie Schreiber of Luxembourg.

An online petition has been signed nearly 10,000 times, while Cycling UK has urged people to oppose the proposed closure which would force vulnerable road users to use a busy A-road “hemmed in by walls with fast flowing traffic and heavy goods vehicles”…
Investigation closed for Gino Mäder's fatal crash at Tour de Suisse
In June, the world lost one of the most precious and wonderful riders. 26-year-old Gino Mäder, stage winner at 2021 Giro d’Italia, was involved in a high-speed crash on the Albulapass descent at the Tour de Suisse this year. Despite being airlifted and resuscitated, Mäder unfortunately didn’t survive the tragic accident.
A criminal investigation was launched soon after the accident. Now, the Prosecuter’s Office has closed the case, finding no criminally relevant fault attributable to any third party, such as the safety of the route or the organisers.
While the world still reels from his demise, since then, the riders’ union president Adam Hansen, involved in a lot of campaigning and organising to make the sport safer, has gone on record and called cycling a dangerous sport, but vowed that it’s getting safer, with increasing rider awareness one of the key agendas of his job.

This was him after beating Sepp Kuss in the Saitama criterium race. Oh, and if you haven’t noticed yet, maybe zoom in on his, erm, trophy.
Yeah, that’s a root vegetable wrapped in a plastic film which Tadej Pogaçar, winner of two Tour de France yellow jerseys, is hoisting up in the air after a season which saw him win almost half the races he contested last year.
Who’s going to tell him… Anyone?
And for those of you wondering, the Japanese criterium — nothing more than an exhibition race with predetermined results — was also contested by the likes of Peter Sagan and Mark Cavendish, who finished third and fourth respectively.
Oh, and there was Chris Froome too, fresh off the knowledge that he had been riding his bike which had a set-up “centimetres” off from his usual set-up during his Tour de France winning years.
Amidst all the showboating and revelling, Pogačar revealed that he’s been enjoying his Tour de France rivalry with Jonas Vingegaard, who has now beaten him two years in a row, and it could go down as something for “the history books”, with the pair sharing the last four titles between them. Maybe our generation’s Jacques Anquetil and Raymond Poulidor?

Imagine if the same amount of effort was put into making it safer for everyone but car users. You could literally apply 90% of any of these complains about cyclists to drivers and if you acted on them you would have 10x the effect on safety vs targetting cyclists. Then again, we all know that the poor motorist is tired. Tired of the war on them. Tired of being scared of their own shadow because of that pesky license plate that stops them breaking rules without the full force of the law coming down on them. I just feel sorry for all those drivers I see constantly breaking the rules knowing that I won't see them in a few days time because they will have been caught and banned. Think of their families.
I don't quite get Visma's post, are they ranking their riders based on the playing card values? in which case, are they that worried about using queen cards that they went straight from kings to jacks?
Can't do any of those things either. But hey, like you, I can ride a double century and leave for work the day after without feeling like someone threw me under a bus. That's got to count for something.
OTOH if the local yoof were tearing about causing bother on emotorbikes I wouldn't be shocked. But doesn't that call for the police, and in an ideal world for something for the kids to do, rather than a cycle ban?
Your reminder that Spalding is in the flatness of Lincolnshire, in a drier part of the UK, and is a town of about 1km in diameter. Looking again at the streets on Streetview I can see that cyclists are clearly the biggest threat to the town centre. And to hardy shoppers braving Critical Mass mobs as they dash from the large carpark in the centre of the Sheep Market across a street 3 lanes wide to the nearest charity shop, kebabery or vape emporium.
@ROOTminus1 alas not only are there tons of people who cycle daily who aren't on Strava or similar (like myself)... ... but there certainly are "I am a cyclist myself" types who *are* keen Stavaphiles. Some of whom might be delighted to ban cyclists from all the routes *they* drive to get to their ride. Or at least look down on any "8 to 80" cycling improvements as either encouraging the incompetent or as the thin end of the wedge to remove their right to cycle on the road.

The lights go dim and the gramophone slows to a baritone slur.
Isle of Man TT is practically synonymous with Road Safety, so it's no surprise they're keen to keep a clean sheet of zero road deaths.
Lots of keen cyclists aren't on Strava etc. A more reliable indicator would be to present an up to data photo of their bike. Many "keen cyclist myself" merchants' photos will be of a bike with a seized chain, two flat tyres standing in the shed with two rotting deckchairs, a neglected trampoline and half a bag of compost. stacked in front of it.
