Team Cav linked with for months told "elite-level lies", says Audrey Cordon-Ragot

French national champion Audrey Cordon-Ragot was, along with Mark Cavendish, linked with a move to Jérôme and Sébastian Pineau’s B&B Hotels-KTM squad that eventually came to nothing, the current team then folding due an apparent lack of sponsorship.

Well, Cordon-Ragot has been speaking in the French press about the protracted affair, saying it’s a “crazy story” and one she “still can’t believe”.

“For two months, we were pushed around. As far as lies go, that’s on an elite level,” she told Le Télégramme. “I’m still trying to find explanations: was it a vicious circle, a spiral, a descent into hell where you lie once, then a second time, then a third time and you end up convincing yourself of your lies?”

> Mark Cavendish’s future uncertain after team boss tells riders to look elsewhere

Big words. And she wasn’t done there…

“I believed so much in this project, I had put my DNA into it. People are going to think I’m completely stupid, but until December 6, I was convinced that it was going to work. I was even yelling at people who said it wasn’t. I feel guilty for taking so many people with me in this shipwreck.

“In the spring, I met the Pineau brothers in Theix. They presented me with their project and proposed me to be part of it. I was in on the secret, it gave me confidence, and I embraced the project like never before. At the same time as I was preparing for the Tour de France – I took care of recruiting the riders and staff with one of my friends and future coach.

“When I asked, Sébastien Pineau reassured me. In mid-October, we were summoned to Paris for an interview with the management, to try on clothes, etc. At the time, I was told that the team’s co-sponsor was about to sign. Why would I doubt it?

> Mark Cavendish ‘confirmed’ as leader of a team which may not exist in two weeks

When the October team presentation was cancelled she “spoke with Mark Cavendish. He told me that he had no news, that he was starting to be afraid.”

“On November 30, I reiterated my concerns to Sébastian Pineau who told me that he never had any doubts, that the bikes will arrive the following week. On December 2, Jérôme Pineau tells me that the whole project will not be done and that only the women’s team could eventually be saved,” she continued.

“Three days later [December 5 – Ed.], the Pineau brothers had a meeting with the directors of B&B Hotels and in the evening, by videotape, they told us that it had only taken them ten minutes to convince them and that, this time, it was sure to go ahead.

A day later Cordon-Ragot “learnt that B&B Hotels no longer wished to continue and that they had informed the Pineau brothers that very morning”.

“I am extremely disappointed, extremely saddened. It calls into question the trust I can give to people. It makes me a bit withdrawn, which is not like me. This story has impacted me enormously. After my stroke, it was a new ordeal.

“I feel more pity. The trust is gone. They tried to save a project that was no longer a project. In the end, we all felt like we were taken hostage.

“I would never understand. I will never understand either that they don’t take responsibility, that they look for other culprits when, sorry, the only culprits are them and the bad people they surrounded themselves with.

“What hurts me deeply is to hear from X and Y that they are trying to blame me, that basically if the team didn’t work out, it’s my fault. In other words, I’m being blamed for talking to the media – something I’ve never done, this is the first and last time I’ll be speaking today – and for not going through with the project when I waited until the last day. All of this sticks in my craw, all this disgusts me. I find it despicable. But the bicycle wheel turns.”

Retired racer Sonny Colbrelli — who was forced to retire from the sport last year due to heart problems just months after winning Paris-Roubaix, the biggest victory of his career — is stepping into politics.

The news, first reported by bresciaoggi.it, is that Colbrelli is on Forza Italia’s electoral list for the next regional elections in Lombardy, scheduled for 12 and 13 February. Along with nine others, including the three current local candidates, Colbrelli will run for a couple of spots in the regional elections.

In their coverage, Cyclingnews points out that Colbrelli has previously reportedly stated he is “a fan of Berlusconi”, the party’s 86-year-old president who has been found guilty of tax fraud and been involved in numerous other scandals.

They also note that in 2014 the former Bahrain Victorious fast man posted a Facebook comment suggesting Mussolini was needed to deal with immigration in Italy. The post was later deleted and Colbrelli said he regretted it and denied it had racial connotations.

Alex Dowsett to turn WorldTour time trialling abilities to triathlon

Sorry to all ‘Rules’ absolutists, Alex Dowsett could be going for a swim before and a run after his bike rides very soon…

The clues were there…

Now, in a press release for NoPinz he says “work has already begun on some new projects”.

“I’m having to contain my excitement and secrecy over them,” Dowsett said. “I’m excited to be with NoPinz for the next step of my career, racing on home soil some more, trying some different disciplines within cycling and who knows, maybe even picking up a pair of goggles before a bike race and a pair of trainers afterwards.”

Dowsett was part of the top team of pro riders drafted in to… well, draft Joe Skipper’s sub-seven Ironman attempt. That was obviously just the bike leg, but it seems it won’t be too long before he’ll be taking on all three too.

More on that cyclocross rider c̶r̶a̶s̶h̶i̶n̶g̶ falling with style

Go back to the earlier post if you haven’t seen the video yet…

Here’s some more info on Benjamin Frederick posted in ‘The Challenge Tires London and SE Cyclo-Cross League’ Facebook group…

Jamie Anderson wrote: “Now that’s what you call a crash recovery! Our Flandrien Hotel CX Scholarship Holder Benjamin Frederick from the USA literally flies over the sand in the X2O Troffee in Koksijde Belgium.

“Ben’s cyclocross career was halted by a traumatic brain injury in 2016, and now, he is thankful for the chance to just ride bikes. He is now racing and raising awareness of brain injuries.

“Ben is as much fun off his RitcheyLogic bike as his is on it, and it’s been awesome having him and his partner Leslie with us at the Flandrien Hotel for the Christmas – New Year Racing block.

Crash vs accident

Peloton to pay $19M in fines over dangerous treadmill defect

More bad news for Peloton… is there ever any good news for the home training brand these days?

The exercise equipment company has agreed to pay $19 million in fines in relation to a delay in reporting a defect with its treadmills that caused one person death and multiple injuries.

The news was announced by the federal consumer watchdog the Consumer Product Safety Commission who yesterday in a statement that said Peloton had knowingly failed to immediately report the defect to the commission, as required by US law.

In December 2018 and into 2019, Peloton received more than 150 reports of incidents where users were pulled under or entrapped, including the death of a child who suffered broken bones, lacerations, abrasions and friction burns.

CPSC said that Peloton didn’t immediately report those incidents to the Commission, despite knowledge of them taking place.

Is that Rhonda Pickering?! Near Miss of the Day goes viral

Well, quite a few people have seen this now…

> Near Miss of the Day 842: Passenger jumps out of car to remonstrate with cyclist… after driver cuts corner and almost hits him

The corner-cutting motorist and their less-than-impressed passenger combine for a classic of the near miss genre, with some suggesting shades of a certain Ronnie Pickering… (Who? Ronnie Pickering? Who? RONNIE PICKERING)…

You’ve almost certainly all seen it before, but there’s never a bad day to watch it again. If it’s your first time, I envy you getting to enjoy the life-changing hilarity of the red-faced Citroën Picasso driver’s insistence in people knowing who he is…

Anyway, back to the issue at hand — NMotd 842…

Carlton Reid has done an interview/podcast with Chris Boardman about the latest DfT/ATE capability fund announcement from earlier in the week https://www.the-spokesmen.com/capabilityboardman/ you can listen or read the transcripts for yourselves but just wanted to highlight this particular bit Chris said “But no, it’s not new money. It’s part of the £2 billion dedicated funding that was promised in 2020”

Also related Norfolk county council have announced this which very much ties in with the bullet points about local walking cycle plans they announced so maybe theres more in this pipeline they keep referring to https://www.edp24.co.uk/news/23231557.cycling-upgrades-planned-20-norfolk-towns-villages/

    I couldn’t resist googling

I couldn’t resist googling for Ronnie Pickering and this is his non-apology, mostly blaming the moped rider and implying that he made money from it. https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/road-rage-ronnie-pickering-wishes-28027953

Including “But Ronnie is not one to back down and he further hit the headlines a few years ago after squaring up to Tommy Coyle’s dad Chris at a weigh-in.

He also assaulted a drug dealer selling outside a friend’s house which landed him in court.

But there has been no lasting damage and Ronnie takes a light-hearted view of it all now.”

Just like the non-apologies of Matthew Paris and Jeremy Clarkson.

Actually the moped rider did make some money from it “Steve, 44, said he sold the rights for the footage to an American video company for $300, or about PS200. He added: “They are also going to pay me a percentage of what it makes so it’s been good.”  Hopefully Gareth will make a few quid from the Rhonda Pickering vid.  https://www.thefreelibrary.com/So%2C+who+the+hell+is+Ronnie+Pickering%3F+Rider+who+filmed+viral+video…-a0430397709

I'll counter that by saying the Bryton 750se I have drives me nuts at times. Inconsistantly picks up on routes created on Komoot and the app re-syncs every few seconds when trying to set up the device and sends me back to the home screen. The most infuriating one is that I turned live track on. Once. It now won't turn off and repeatedly flags up the live track is starting, and then disconnecting every few seconds whilst riding. I haven't timed it but it wouldn't suprise me if 10-20% of the time the the screen is covered with an error message. That's been about 6 weeks now. Other than that it's great :/

What is the point of the fancy air sensor if it can't account for changing weather conditions?? If all you care about is a delayed approximation of aerodynamic watts in steady conditions, you don't need any special sensors for that. Just your speed on a decently flat course is enough to approximate rolling resistance and drivetrain losses. And the rest must be aero. If you assume a less aero body position at the same watts, your speed will drop while rolling resistance also drops, which means approximated aero watts goes up. And that's enough to demonstrate what you've shown in your testing protocol ("I sat upright and the number went up a little while later").

in: Could correcting your aero position in real time really unlock free speed? I put the new Wasted Watts Tracker to the test to find out
chrisonabike 3 hours ago

Your correction is accurate - it's almost always been "the (lack of) thought that (doesn't) count". "Massive" - less than a billion a year spent on active travel (trying to catch up / building a network across the entire country) Not massive - 6 billion every year (2026-2030) spent on road *maintenance* of existing "already built, goes everywhere, very convenient" road network for inactive travel Ultimately the reason "cycle infra" is *needed* is those unbelievably colossal amounts spent every year (and for more than a century now) on making mass motoring not just viable but apparently the "best choice" for most journeys. As the Dutch and others have shown, the majority of people *are* prepared to cycle and even mix with very light, slow local motor traffic *if* cycling is also made safe and convenient for the whole of their journey (including secure parking at both ends). (The history of the financial drivers of the current situation are a complex topic but note that while people complain about "crumbling roads" and underfunded motor infra - with some reason - by us continuing the fuel duty escalator freeze (for example) we're actually helping motorists pay *even less* for that activity / subsidising more of the cost of driving than ever.)

@MaxiMinimalist Agreed. The big problem I see now is today's parents grew up being driven to their schools, and therefore, see private motor vehicles as the only viable form of transport. The vast majority of UK infant and primary schools have a catchment area that is within easy walking distance from home to school. Yet, the traffic caused by pupils being driven to/from school is astonishing. Banishing the "School Run" should be a priority for all schools.

When I was a kid (that was during the previous millenium when phones were connected to a plug in the wall), I rode my bicycle to school, music academy, sport grounds, parties even during the winter. The government didn't have to spend, correct that, didn't have to think of spending massive amounts of money to build cycling specific infrastructures. Over the past 3 or 4 decades, cars have grown bigger, taller, safer (for their drivers) and faster. Meanwhile, motorists have become abusive, aggressive, hypersensitive to people moving on two wheels, aka cyclists. Spending billions upon billions on new infrastructure won't address the crux of the matter. Sadly.
