EF Education First-Drapac rider Daniel Martinez has spent the night in hospital in Tuscany after being punched by a motorist while he was training with team mates near Pistoia.
The Colombian rider reportedly suffered amnesia following the incident, which happened on Tuesday morning.
Update: @danifmartinez96 was training today with a group, which was buzzed by a car. Martinez was later punched by the driver, along with another cyclist. Martinez was taken to hospital, where he remains under observation but is in good condition.

“I was training in Italy and a car nearly killed us,” the 21-year-old told El Tiempo. “We complained and he [the driver] went mad.
“He got out and attacked me. He punched me on the jaw, knocking me out.
“He cut another guy’s lip then ran off,” added Martinez, who finished eighth overall at the Volta a Catalunya last week.
Italian former pro Michele Bartoli, who coaches Martinez, told Cycling News: “There was some kind of altercation with a motorist while the guys were out training.
“I’ve called Dani, he seems OK and he recognised my voice but admitted that he can’t remember anything from the last few months, including his recent good ride at the Volta a Catalunya or his move from Wilier to EF Education First.
“He’s in hospital for further checks,” Bartoli added.

It’s better to not be carrying an obvious weapon as that can count against you if the law gets involved. However, you can weaponise your brain and body so that a typical fat, sluggish moton will stand little chance of ever landing a blow.
Learn a martial art (any one will do) and make sure that you do some sparring to learn the timing and how to avoid simple attacks. That will count for far more than an idiot wielding a baseball bat.

Learning a martial art is the correct response, not the baseball bat. Once someone learns how to handle themselves then their body language and demeanour change in a conflict situation; this in itself is often sufficient to deter attacks. Of course knowing how to react and handle yourself, should matters escalate is an additional benefit, not the primary, because self defence techniques in cleats would be challenging!

Sorry, I did indeed misread your comment.
Martial arts are to be commended, but there will come a time when you are faced with multiple opponents, or a knife. Or worse.
Not much you can do legally, since we’re a nation of emasculated pussies where our betters tell us that if there’s a terrorist attack, we should ‘run, hide, tell’ like children.
But I’m not one for arbitrary notions of what’s ‘legal’ and what’s not.

I’m not sure where you live, but I’ve never heard that advice for our shitbag government, or incompetent police forces. Either way, I would not be running from any terrorist. I would also make a decsion on goods that can be easily replaced against cost of broken pride (and bones) if confronted by violence. Neither option makes me a pussy, I’ll admit to being a cunt at times, but never a pussy.

Is that for a firearms attack or a terrorist attack? Neither you nor the article are clear. Either way, fuck ’em. Terrorist win with, erm, what’s it called, erm…. Got it! Terror. So fucke ’em! And psychos with guns are just that and guns aren’t that much of a problem in the UK, So fuck ’em. I’ve prpbably more chance of a head injury while cycling.
And yes, I have been pretty close to more than one terror attack, so fuck ’em!

Indeed.
I always find it strange when people shake their fist and bellow for gun control. They don’t really mean that they want rid of guns. They just mean that they want guns taken off of some people. I don’t recall seeing any of the protestors in the US calling for the various police forces to be disarmed. Strange then that 277 have so far been killed by police in the US.

Sixteen times more than at the Florida school shooting of February.
And I don’t think that many Brits want Theresa May to be guarded by unarmed plod.
So in short, people only want guns to be in the hands of the elite minority – usually going by the name of ‘the government’.
I wonder how many people were killed by ‘governments’ (plural) in the 20th century. Oh, look. It’s around 292 million!

Well, it’s not really a caricature. The protests of the past few months have been pretty angry.
Nice dodge, though.

Where was this?
I have to remind myself when giving the finger to (bad) drivers around Hulme and Moss Side that it might not be the best thing for my health, no one has pulled a gun on me of popped a cap in my ass yet.
I’m genuinely interested which part of the UK this happened.

Americans are an odd bunch
Americans are an odd bunch anyway. Go and watch some US road rage videos and some UK ones. The first thing I noticed is the American trigger point is massively smaller, literally things the UK motorist wouldn’t even care about or possibly may ‘beep’ someone about. In the US, it’s car chase “you almost killed me, you asshole” when someone changes lane 50ft infront of them.
The UK road rage also seems more of a banter competition in a lot of cases, who can find the best insult sort of thing. US road rage is straight to threats to kill or actual violence.
If you made your average America drive around somewhere like Bradford they’d be in the psych ward by tea time. I used to know this American who worked at Menwith Hill and he said when took visiting Americans out for drive down our tight and twisty A-roads, they’d be shitting themselves as some of them had never seen anything other than 90degree turns and straights. He was a petrolhead and loves european cars so he was a bit different.
