A woman has died after being in collision a lorry in South London this afternoon.
Emergency services rushed to the incident at about 2.40pm, and attempted to save the woman, aged in her twenties, but she was pronounced dead at the scene in St James’ Road, near Selhurst, reports the Evening Standard.
The woman is the first person to have been killed in a collision witha motor vehicle while cycling on London’s roads since 26 year-old-Ying Tao was killed in collision with a tipper truck at Bank in June 2015. (One other cyclist has been killed on London’s road’s in that time: In November a man in his late sixties died from his injuries after colliding with another cyclist in the New Kings Road).
Officers were called to the crash, at the junction with Lansdowne Road, by the London Ambulance Service this afternoon, and London Air Ambulance was also scrambled.
The Metropolitan Police are trying to trace the woman’s next of kin.
The junction of Lansdowne Road and St James Road, where the collision occurred, is less than 500ft West of a proposed Quietway (Q5) on Sydenham Road, that will run from Waterloo to West Croydon.

Horrible waste of life. Lorries are a nightmare, face it, but they’re more essential than most car travel which can be done in some other form.
Hate to use a death to make a political point, but if her tragedy can be used to help others then I hope this is shoved in Khan’s face. Everyone knows what needs to be done. Get spending.

RIP, heart breaking everytime this happens. A young life gone, so many people affected, and (not to opportion any blame in this case) often almost certainly avoidable with the right attitude, training and equipment re: lorry/driver and a little uncommon sense from us cyclists.
Please holler to your fellow cyclists if you see them disappearing up the inside of a lorry or lurking in a blind spot. The worse you’ll get is a ‘f### off’
How much compensation will
How much compensation will the hauler in question be required to pay the next of kin as recompense for the incompetence of their driver? When are we going to see a mandatory lifetime ban for drivers who kill?

I don’t know what happened, or even which way they were travelling, but the lane suddenly narrows by ~40% at a junction: the cycle lane just meanders back into the traffic.

The driver is in custody, arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and failing to stop.
I’m not that far away, lot’s I’d like to say about Croydon, its roads and its priorities. But the Police need to do their job, and we need to remind them (and the CPS) that they need to do their job.
