Trends are changing fast in road cycling and nowhere is this more obvious in the tyre choice currently available, with increasing widths and tread patterns tailored towards the growing demand for multi-terrain traction. Schwalbe showed off some new rubber at Eurobike a little while back, including this new G-One Bite gravel tyre.
Designed to complement its existing G-One Speed and G-One Allround tyres, the new G-One Bite, as the name signifies, is designed to offer a bit more bite in rough, loose and slippery terrain. The tread pattern features a spread of taller round knobs spaced loosely along the sides and tightly packed in the centre, to provide fast rolling characteristics. The knobs are siped to allow them to deform for increased grip in the loose.
“This G-One feels pretty good on the road, but its true strength comes through off-road. G-One Bite is constructed for more off-road use than its stablemates. The open tread design and strong outer blocks provide stability when cornering and deliver this G-One the perfect “Bite”,” says the company.
The new tyre will come in 700x40mm and 650bx2.1in versions catering for the two wheelsizes that are popular in the adventure and gravel bike market at the moment. There’s the same Tubeless Easy and OneStar Triple Compound technologies. No UK price yet but expect a €57-60 price tag.
Away from the adventure and gravel bike market, cyclocross season is well underway and keen to offer racers a tyre for fast conditions, Schwalbe has launched the new X-One Speed.
As you can clearly determine from the picture, the tread pattern is low profile with a low dimple height in the centre to reduce rolling resistance, while taller and longer shoulder blocks give you something to lean on in the corners. Maybe not the most suitable for the UK, but I’ve done a handful of ‘cross races so far and the courses have been bone dry, but you would definitely have to treat them with some caution if there’s even the slightest bit of damp.
It’s 33mm wide and tubeless-ready and comes in OneStar, RaceGuard and Dual compound versions and costs from €38.
Stay tuned for reviews of these new tyres soon.

I wonder who funded the research?
