It's far less about finding challenging trails, it's about finding trails full stop. Only around 22% of paths in UK are bridleways and thus legal to ride. Here in Sheffield/Peak District, only 11% of paths are bike legal. So you either ride footpaths or ride on road. Seeing that the biggest benefit of off road riding is no dangerous drivers, roads are often not a real option. Plus, most of the distinctions as to what is a footpath and what is a bridleway is purely arbitrary. Particularly as most paths to most places would have been used by by folk on horseback.

Was this a Fifa-style offer eg. "We're planning to come and make money * anyway, but if you make it official you get a cut"? * Probably from venture capital but at any rate mostly not from people directly paying for a ride. Point being: the priorities don't align well with "contributing to the good of the place".

It was a lane, and indeed a "mandatory" one, and does have intermittent blocks and wands, although I'm pretty sure those don't make a cycle track unless continuous? (I admit that I'm hazy on the exact Uk definitions but I suspect the definitions are hazy also)? As you note lanes are out, but cycle tracks may be in, if you're in class 2 or 3. So the chap was out of order, but I am more inclined to blame the lack of provision first and then the rules. This was in a part of town where there's a massive space between buildings, not even filled by what was 2 lanes in each direction, with median...

@belugabob Much of it down to effectively bribery I'm afraid, with no overall authority for controlling them London's councils struck individual deals - £1.3M with Forest bikes in Richmond, a staggering £93M over five years with Lime and Voi in Haringey, for example. Can't kill the golden egg goose!

It’s about time someone found the balls to stand up to the brutal cyclists going around with 5 or less reflectors. The sheer number of lives lost to the reckless abandon shown by these cyclists is just astounding.

Some Canadian Provinces have some strange bike laws. I lived in Halifax, Nova Scotia on the Canadian east coast and when I bought a bike I asked for a set of lights and the bike shop guy said why ? “To ride at night” I replied – ” Not a legal requirement ” he answered -“but you are required to have a helmet – night or day”

And with helmet and reflector laws cycling has not got safer in Canada, it’s got worse with more deaths and more injuries since they started forcing helmet wearing/increases in helmet wearing across the country.
Yet another backward society that focuses on the vulnerable to protect themselves instead of changing the behaviour of those doing the harm. What utter bullshit.
Lovely video of the fab overtake by the transporter, I had a brilliant overtake on a country road a couple of years ago, after a fair few of the usual crud it was a nice relief so I contacted the firm ( not local but family run business) to give praise and they responded back that they got their drivers out on bikes and made particular training sessions for their drivers when in various scenarios where they might come across people on bikes.
We all have to get some place and that means when you’re in the bigger/biggest thing out there you need to take more time and care with how you do things to minimise the risk for all concerned including yourself.
