@OnYerBike "legally it applies to any non-EAPC ebike" I assume you mean an Electricaly Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) that conforms to the EAPC Regulations 1983 . . . , rather that an EAPC that doesn't (ie. one legally considered to be a motorbike).

Well currently all taxpayers are effectively paying motorists *not* to be aware, as although I believe the motoring-specific taxes cover "the road budget" (or did several years ago when I looked) they don't cover the "externalities of motoring" eg. the "off-budget costs" *. Like other "costs" eg. schools, keeping older people alive, art etc. we could say "we're all happy to pay, because we just love mass motoring for convenience, even though it's the source of many complaints and some deaths". We implicitly do, and we're often prepared for a few *others* to be KSI for "progress", so I'm not sure that the public would reject that if it was spelled out in that way. OTOH once people have had the chance to experience a different way (at least in urban areas) the results (from many places now) consistently show they don't want to go back to "traffic in towns" even if that means less motor convenience! * Not counted by design I think, although some say it's because they're too hard to quantify or "nebulous". Plenty of studies have tried though, and suggested that overall motoring is a net cost to everyone.

This sadly will require some real men as protection. Many vehicle users can be violent and devious. When petrol was around 60p per litre I pressed a car user into stating what his limit was for a litre was, "£5" he said in 1998ish. His answer will be around £30 pounds today.

@Motivated you would be surprised that good beam cut off lights give you better results for road riding than MTB as they focus the light and power on the road instead of spreading it everywhere, ideally one with full beam via remote and you are covered. But I agree with ignoring STVZO as most of those lights are rather weak and overpriced

@andystow yeah, apparently four needed, two for each pedal: one visible from rear, one from front. (Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations I believe). For several reasons I'm technically stuffed on the recumbent. Although I guess I could strap an extra pair of pedals with them to the sides (they'd be like epaulettes). I'm guessing amputees who opt not to bother with one of the pedals also don't legally have a leg to stand on...

I would assume Starbucks have video cameras. Although it will just show someone in a grey hoodie.

And if you're not cycling and still have time, online there are the blogs / videos of bicycledutch, notjustbikes (also "urbanism" and general transport), "a view from the cycle path" (David Hembrow), or more locally to you hedgehogcycling (from Harrogate, posts here)... oh, and road.cc! If you prefer a book, check out Peter Waker's "Bike nation - how cycling can save the world", Carlton Reid's ouvre (dives into particular cycle-related points in history eg. "Bike boom", "Roads Were Not Built for Cars" etc), or there's Laura Laker's "Potholes and Pavements" about the UK's NCN. If you want to be social IRL your city / region may well have a local cycling campaign group...
