On the same day that Garmin launched its new flagship Edge 1060 bike computer and the mapping-focused Edge Explore 3 and Edge Explore 3 Plus units, the tech giant has also unveiled a new premium Tacx indoor trainer. The Nēra comes with “built-in multidirectional motion” for side-to-side and back-and-forth movement to enhance realism and comfort, there’s a Zwift Cog & Click option, and it has all the expected high-end specs such as +/-1% accuracy, built-in WiFi, and race mode for extra responsiveness in virtual races.

We haven’t been told what Nēra actually translates to, but without the accent it can mean ‘black’ in Italian, ‘candle’ or ‘light’ in Hebrew, ‘time’ in Tamil or ‘waters’ in Greek. We’re pretty sure it wouldn’t be practical to use the Nēra aquatically, but any of the other three could sort of work…
Back to the product itself – as Garmin still carries the Tacx Neo 3M and Neo 2T trainer on its website, at first glance you’d be hard pushed to see how it can justify the launch of a whole new trainer, as the specs are so similar across all three. All of them look and weigh around the same (in fact the Nēra is the heaviest at 24.7kg), and they all have the +/-1% accuracy claims and 2,200 watt power ceiling. There is no option to add WiFi connectivity on the 2T, and for the 3M this requires an expensive adapter on top of the already very expensive £1,129 asking price.
At £859.99, you could say the Nēra amalgamates the best of both by including WiFi out of the box and the new motion pods for a bit of a friendlier price – although this is still right towards the top end for a premium smart trainer, with Wahoo’s latest Kickr now down to £774.99 with very similar specs.

The built-in forward, backward and side-to-side motion is said to provide “a more immersive, comfortable and realistic ride while you train indoors”. This is slightly different to the Neo 3M, that had motion plates you could toggle on or off via some twist buttons at the rear of the trainer. The motion plates sent you mostly back and forth with a bit of lateral movement, which you could choose to toggle off if you wanted a more rigid ride feel. The Nēra removes that choice.
The Nēra has built in Race Mode for extra responsiveness during virtual races, although both previous flagship Tacx trainers now have this thanks to firmware updates. The maximum incline is 20%, though Garmin suggests pairing the Nēra with the Tacx Alpine gradient simulator (yours for another £929.99) to simulate ascents of up to 25% and down to -10%.
The Nēra requires very little assembly, as the legs just needed to be unfolded out the box. Of course that means they can be folded up again for easier storage, and carting the 24.7kg unit around is made a little easier with the carry handle. A power cable, pre-installed Shimano 11/12-speed cassette, quick release skewer, thru-axle adapters and a 5mm Allen key are all included in the box.

Both Tacx Nēra and Tacx Nēra with Zwift Cog and Click have a RRP of £859.99. That’s the same price as the Neo 2T, and considerably cheaper than the Neo 3M. If you think it’s the one versus those other two very similar trainers, it will be available to order from 23 October via Garmin’s website and several retailers.
