Taken Cycles is an all-new MTB brand based out of Boise, Idaho, and run by a trio of long-term riding buddies and industry vets who have decided to put their skills and know-how to the test by launching a new brand and a new bike.

Its first bike, the Taken Encounter, is an all-alloy model that has been designed to be burly enough to take on full-on downhill riding, but versatile enough to also be built up as an all-mountain or enduro bike. It really does feel like the industry is getting back to producing ‘mountain bikes’ again, ones that can’t easily be pigeonholed and locked down to a certain discipline, and I’m here for it.

The all-alloy frame features mechanic-friendly external cable routing, beautiful chunky welds, and a large rocker link that produces 155-176mm rear travel that’s adjustable through shock stroke. Suspension specialist Chris Canfield worked on the Encounter to incorporate his patented CBF (Canfield Balance Formula) in a high-pivot package utilising an iTrack design. This means that the idler pulley isn’t in line with the main pivot and can move with the swingarm, which can be used to further tune the kinematics.

As you would expect from such a versatile alloy bike, the Taken Encounter can be run as a mullet or a full 29er, which is adjusted via flip chips. It’s downhill-rated, meaning the front end has been designed to handle 160-180mm single-crown forks or 180-190mm dual-crown forks, and there’s an SRAM UDH hanger too.

Four sizes of the Encounter will be offered, from S1 to S4, with reach figures ranging from 430 to 505mm. The head angle sits at around 63 degrees (depending on fork length), while the seat tube angle is a pedal-friendly 78 degrees. And thanks to short seat tube lengths and completely straight seat tubes, it should be fairly easy to choose a model with the right standover and dropper insertion to meet your requirements.
