Bradley Wiggins’ podium finish at Paris-Nice has helped lift Team Sky to second place in the latest UCI World Rankings, published today.
The British ProTeam outfit has 170 points, 25 ahead of Team RadioShack in third place, but 41 behind HTC-Highroad whose rider Tony Martin, winner of the French multi-stage race, tops the individual rankings.
Martin leads the individual rankings by two points from Garmin-Cervelo’s Cameron Meyer, with another Australian, HTC-Highroad’s Matt Goss, in third. Team Sky’s Ben Swift, who won two stages of the Tour Down Under in January, is fifth with Wiggins sixth.
Great Britain currently lies third in the national rankings, having been leapfrogged by Germany as a result of the performances of Martin and RadioShack’s Andreas Kloden in Paris-Nice. Australia remain top.
A strong showing in the national rankings will be essential this season if Mark Cavendish’s bid for World Championship success in Denmark this autumn is to be supported by a full complement of team mates, with the number of places allocated to each country determined in the first instance by its position in the overall standings.
