Canada's men's team pursuit quartet in big crash at Track Worlds (+ link to video)

All four riders sent sliding across the boards as New Zealand riders lapped them

Canada's men's team pursuit quartet were involved in a spectacular crash as the 2017 UCI Track World Championships got under way in Hong Kong today.

The 60 kilometre an hour crash happened during a qualifying heat as the New Zealand team overhauled them on the back straight with just under a quarter of the 4,000 metres left to ride.

It was caused by what seems to have been a touch of wheels between the lead rider of the Canadian squad, and the fourth member of the New Zealand team.

All four Canadian riders were left sliding across the boards of the Hong Kong Velodrome, with the track needing repairing afterwards.

You can watch video of the crash on the BBC Sport website here, with the footage only available to viewers in the UK.

New Zealand qualified fifth fastest in a time of 3:53.422, with Australia going quickest, completing the 16 laps in 3:50.577.

Great Britain qualified fifth fastest, clocking 3:58.936.

After successfully negotiating the subsequent first round, Australia and New Zealand will race for gold tomorrow, while Great Britain take on Italy for bronze.

Track time must be at a premium, surely.  But it still seems a a bit smarter to have the teams go out individually if they're not tilting them in a head-to-head elimination.

So who qualified fifth fastest then?

Shame falling off gets more headlines than reaching the finals...
