Whaam! Check out Wiggo's new shoes

Giro design nods to Paul Weller and Roy Lichtenstein’s pop art

Sir Bradley Wiggins has been showing off a new pair of Giro shoes that owes a lot to a classic Paul Weller guitar emblazoned with a Lichtenstein pop art design.

The design on the Giro Empire shoes has been done by Jimbo Phillips, best known as a skateboard artist.

Check out our review of the Giro Empire SLX shoes here.

Back in his days with The Jam, Paul Weller famously played a Rickenbacker guitar decorated with the Whaam! design from American artist Roy Lichtenstein, itself an adaptation of a panel from a DC Comics publication.

As far as we know, these are a one-off rather than a design that's going into full production, but we'll check that with Giro.

The shoes have been made for Wiggo to wear during the Amgen Tour of California which starts on Sunday, 15 May.

They look absolutely smashing.  Provided you're quick.  A slow duffer wearing these would look silly.

He's a broken record with all this mod shit. Just have done with it: buy Paul Weller (or at least Phil Daniels) and have him mounted on your chuffing handlebars.

Oh dear.  Whatever happened here?  Some sort of explosion in a paint factory?  It's got GCSE Art project written all over it.

Daring. Good stuff. Cycling can be cringe-worthily conservative. Wouldn't be surprised if it goes all tweedy at some point like hiking did.

I would buy them if they went into production. Very desireable. smiley

I'm trying to hate them but I think they're quite cool.

If he is going to have hand made shoes, he may as well go for something that he likes.  I think they are fabulous.  OK fabulous with a side-order of pretentious.
